So you're going to wear the kilt
By Allen M. Cary
I found this book to be very informative and particularly demystifying. Above all the late Scotty Thompson is an advocate of wearing the kilt early and often. He gives both the purist and the simpler view of what is proper and labels the views clearly. He wants people to wear the kilt proudly, and tells them how to avoid the gaffes that either offend or look ludicrous. After reading this book you can feel confident that you are correct in your highland attire. If there is any shortcoming it may be in his descriptions of the construction of various accessories. His instructions for making things like cockades and toories for bonnets are a bit difficult to follow. All in all though, it is excellent

The best I've found so far.
By Doug Bailey
There is not a lot of good information out there regarding the correct way to wear Scottish National Dress; Thompson's book almost wins by default, despite being a good reference on the subject. The strength of the book is his clear explanation of the standards of wear expected in Scotland and as such is invaluable to anyone intending to wear National Dress in that country and not offend. However discussion on individual standards developing in the former 'colonies' is light and the wearing of trews as legitimate National Dress by Border Scots and overseas clansmen is almost completely lacking. But then this is a book on wearing the kilt, is it not! For the first time wearer, one can agonise over details that seasoned wearers take for granted: should the kilt be worn under the ribs or slung on the hips; at what height should ghillie brogue laces be tied; most of these points are covered with clear explanations. In summary, a great reference book but perhaps in need of an update with regards the evolution of fashions since the last edition.

Nomads and their Neighbours in the Russian Steppe: Turks, Khazars and Qipchaqs (Variorum Collected Studies Series), by Peter B. Golden

The western steppelands of Central Eurasia, stretching from the Danube, through the modern Ukraine and southern Russia, to the Caspian, have historically been the meeting ground of Inner Asian pastoral nomads and the agrarian societies of Eastern Europe and the Caucasus. This volume deals, firstly, with the interaction of the nomads with their sedentary neighbours - the Kievan Rus’ state and the medieval polities of Transcaucasia, Georgia in particular - in the period from the 6th century to the advent of the Mongols. Second, it looks at questions of nomadic ethnogenesis (Oghuz, Hungarian, Qipchaq), at the evolution of nomadic political traditions and the heritage of the Turk empire, and at aspects of indigenous nomadic religious traditions together with the impact of foreign religions on the nomads - notably the conversion of the Khazars to Judaism. A number of articles focus on the Qipchaqs, a powerful confederation of complex Inner Asian origins that played a crucial role in the history of Christian Eastern Europe and Transcaucasia and the Muslim world between the 11th and 13th centuries.

Review
'Golden's study touches upon the earliest history of Russia, Ukraine, Persia, Ottoman Turkey, and the Caucasus. In a field that has relatively little published, the compilation of these articles into a single volume is a great benefit.' The Russian Review 'This latest addition to Variorum's collection is to be applauded and will further make Peter Golden's contributions to Eurasian studies more readily available to students and scholars of this and related fields.' BSOAS 'This volume of collected essays by Peter B. Golden represents a prestigious addition to Ashgate's Variorum series, and should be welcomed by all historians of medieval Asia and Russia... The articles that relate to specific, and yet broad-ranging historical problems are paragons of erudition and scholarly brilliance... I recommend this book warmly to everyone who takes medieval Eurasian history seriously, and invite readers to reflect on the degree of scholarship required to make even minute progress in this field, which is, not surprisingly, as sparsely inhabited as the steppe region itself. The kind of knowledge that Peter Golden displays in his work cannot be replicated on the basis of today's academic training, and, sadly, one must concede that research of a standard comparable to this collection may well be unattainable in the future.' Central Asiatic Journal 'One of the leading scholars of the pre-Mongol history of the Western Eurasian Steppe and the surrounding areas, [Peter Golden] is the predominant historian and philologist in this field writing in English... Prof. Golden's research is firstly based on a thorough and deep study of virtually all of the relevant sources for the period, stretching from Arabic, Persian, Aramaic and Hebrew, through Old Slavic, Turkic, and Mongolian, to Chinese and other languages. This is buttressed by a systematic and profound reading of modern studies in a myriad of languages. Time and again I am amazed by the extent of the author's reading of Russian language scholarship, which for some of us is unfortunately a closed book... I highly recommend the volume to all those interested in learning more about the background to the Mongol expansion of the thirteenth century and their subsequent period of widespread political control.' Useful reference book for those intereste in the early medieval history of the Eastern Europ
By Gregory Ticker
Author is well known and highly reputable specialist on the the early medieval Eastern Europe, and various turcic nomads, who shaped to the large extend the history of this region. The present issue is a collection of the articles published by author in various academic journals and compendiums on the subject. Unfortunately publisher had chosen not to reset the text, but used photocopies of the articles, which looks rather shoddy for the book at this price. Book would be of interest for specialists, students, and amateurs interested in the history of the Black Sea-Caspian steppe region, and interaction of the turcic nomads with thier nieghbours: Eastern Slavs, Byzantium, etc.

Awakening the Kind Heart: How to Meditate on Compassion, by Kathleen McDonald

Everyone appreciates kindness. A smile, a few friendly words, a show of concern when we're troubled or feeling unwell, an offer of help - gestures of kindness like these brighten our day and ease whatever sadness we may feel in our hearts. Feeling that "someone cares" fulfills a very deep need that we all have. And just as we appreciate other people being kind to us, others appreciate it when we are kind to them. That is why it is important to learn to be kind, because it will help make our relationships and interactions with others more satisfying and less problematic.

But it's not always easy to be kind. Sometimes our hearts are filled with anger, jealousy, or pride, and being kind is the last thing we feel like doing. Or we get so caught up in our work and responsibilities that we find no time to think of others and their needs, no time to be kind and gentle. However, these problems can be remedied. The Buddhist tradition offers a wealth of methods that can be used to overcome whatever prevents us from being kind and gentle.

Some of these methods are explored and explained in this book - in a way that will allow you to practice them in your daily life. Awakening the Kind Heart offers powerful and inviting meditation techniques to activate the heart of kindness within us all - a modern and motivating interpretation of traditional and powerful practices.

For seriously transformative souls
By R.E. Burke
Encountering the everyday world can be daunting for most of us given all the negative influences (anger, frustration, etc.) and opportunities to chase attachments (sex, money, power) that ultimately prove less than satisfying. At their best, Christianity and Buddhism are transformative exercises in spiritual development whereby we seek to encounter the world not with more negativity but rather with a spirit of kindness, compassion, and forgiveness.

Both faiths have ways of going about this. Those who follow the middle path of Buddhism often choose metta meditation, "metta" meaning lovingkindness. Dogma aside, Buddhism has systematized and refined meditative techniques for kindness and compassion to a very high level. These techniques in turn are part and parcel of a tradition of contemplative mysticism stretching back several millennia in both faiths and leading in the past century to a Christian/Buddhist dialog between such well-known figures as Thomas Merton, John Main, the Dalai Llama, and Thich Naht Hanh.

Kathleen McDonald is a culmination of this tradition in her down to earth guide to meditations on kindness and compassion. As with her previous book "How to Meditate," Ms. McDonald focuses on methods for establishing a day to day practice of metta meditation. She has a refreshingly open approach that is not overly dogmatic in tone although she does bring some Buddhist concepts into play. Her work is not an inspirational treatise or an intellectual history of this kind of meditation. It seeks rather to give the reader some worthwhile starting points for actual meditation.

From this standpoint, she addresses meditations that focus on our kindness to others, the kindnesses of others to ourselves, and an equinanimous approach to others. I particularly enjoyed her discussion toward the end of the Eight Verses of Mind Transformation.

It's worth noting that announcements that we will be kind and compassionate, as well as exhortations to others, do not have as much practical value as actually setting out to be kind and compassionate in our thoughts, words, and actions. It is in acting that we bring about such virtues. Ms. McDonald has given us an action-oriented guide. The more we are able to practice such virtues in our thoughts, then the more our words and actions will also reflect this. When we reach the point of maintaining this attitude even with those we have reason to dislike intensely, then we have made some notable progress.

As with Ms. McDonald's other book on meditation, this is not a "read" so much as a handbook to be consulted in the course of one's meditation practice. It is really a work for anyone with a concern for kindness and compassion, not just those with a specific commitment to Buddhism. I highly recommend it, but please keep in mind that this is not something to just be read and put down. It is the entry point to what might become a very substantial commitment to transform oneself in positive ways.

My thanks go to Ms. McDonald for writing this. And my apologies go to anyone who feels that my characterizations are clumsy or inexact; it was not my intention to be offensive.

P.S.: Those who would like to get a sense of more Christian approaches might consider consulting Merton's "Contemplative Prayer." Merton, of course, has an explicitly Catholic approach which tends to focus on techniques such as the Liturgy of the Hours (the Divine Office). Although the Christian emphasis on a contemplative vocation has suffered in recent centuries, there is still a considerable body of work available to those who look for it. I can especially recommend the version of "The Cloud of Unknowing" with an introduction by Evelyn Underhill. Written by a fourteenth century monk, this little gem seems to be coming back into vogue.

Wonderful book
By regular reader
This is the second book by Kathleen McDonald I have read. The first was her book "How to Meditate, a Practical Guide". I have found this book to be an excellent companion to the first. Also containing meditation practices and teachings this book has helped me advance in my knowledge and practice of Buddhism. I use both books on a daily basis.

I highly recommend this book either as a companion to "How to Meditate, a Practical Guide" or as a stand alone read. Kathleen is an excellent teacher of meditation. As a beginner with a "lone" practice I have found her books to provide me with the teaching necessary to begin and progress in my Buddhist path.

You need not be a beginner to benefit from her teaching. Whether you choose to simply read the book once or use in in an ongoing manner I believe you will find it most beneficial.

Excellant for anyone who wants to reduce inner turmoil and cultivate inner peace and love for all
By ItsMe
Written by a Western nun, this book is very clear and understandable. I attend a weekly study & meditation group consisting of Buddhists (1-5 years experience) and non-Buddhists. We have met for 3 years. This is the first book we read where there are almost no questions, because the text is so easy to understand. She presents concepts and then follows them with guided meditations (she suggestions the questions to ask yourself, the points to ponder). The group liked this book so much that once we finished it we started over to read and practice it again. A great guide for learning how to meditate on compassion, eliminate anger, etc. for people who don't know how.

Saltwater Buddha: A Surfer's Quest to Find Zen on the Sea, by Jaimal Yogis

Fed up with teenage life in the suburbs, Jaimal Yogis ran off to Hawaii with little more than a copy of Hermann Hesse's Siddhartha and enough cash for a surfboard. His journey is a coming-of-age saga that takes him from communes to monasteries, from the warm Pacific to the icy New York shore. Equal parts spiritual memoir and surfer's tale, this is a chronicle of finding meditative focus in the barrel of a wave and eternal truth in the great salty blue.

From Publishers Weekly
A journalist, photographer, surfer and Zen Master, Yogis began the life of a roving seeker his junior year of high school, when he ran away from his Sacramento, Calif. home to learn how to surf in Hawaii. His subsequent travels include a handful of prime surfing spots, but Yogis's more arresting journey is spiritual, taking him to monasteries in France and Berkley, Calif., and deep into the living tradition of Zen Buddhism. Captured here in short chapters and wonderful, visual prose, Yogis's coming-of-age odyssey also takes readers into the culture of indigenous Hawaiians, who believe the gods were surfers. Yogis's long-time surfing mentor Rom provides insight into the science of surfing, ocean swells, the bathymetry of the continental shelf, deep water canyons and sea mounts. Even land lovers will find Yogis's lessons resonant and entertaining, but surfers will find this a quick, surprisingly deep tribute to the quest for surf and serenity.

Review
"Jaimal's story is, in part, an adventure story in which the sea is a powerful antagonist, at once the siren and the ogre, irresistible and terrifying in its sheer, monstrous power. For this author, it's a voracious and demanding lover, and he is skilled at summoning its ever-changing presence." (The Huffington Post)

A wonderful and insightful book
By David
I started surfing about 3 months ago. That was also around the same time I started seriously looking at Buddhism. It is amazing that I discovered Jamail Yogis's book while going through a vaguely parallel experience.

Coming from this perspective, Saltwater Buddha is an amazing book that blends personal memoir with spiritual insight. It is thoughtful, well-written, and an entertaining read. The last point is worth emphasizing - a spiritual journey may be very interesting to the person going through it, but it will not necessarily resonate with others. Yogis has accomplished the task of translating his inner journey into a narrative that holds the reader's attention and can speak to people from varied spiritual backgrounds.

From a purely descriptive perspective, the book is about a man's intellectual, emotional, and spiritual maturation. Yogis lived a life that many of us dream of. Several times during his life he followed his impulses and went to Hawai'i to pursue his passion for surfing. However, these excursions to Hawai'i were bracketed by emotional growth and learning to take responsibility. As easy as it would be to lose oneself in a tropical paradise, Yogis realized that he needed to balance his passion with the more mundane aspects of life. The book traces his journey back and forth between these twin forces.

At the same time, Yogis is going through significant spiritual growth. Whether it is through private meditation or a stint in a monastery, his spiritual education moved through both formal and informal channels. More significantly, much of his spiritual growth came out of his movement between passion and responsibility. Life is often the greatest spiritual guide. For him, it was surfing that had one of the largest impacts on his journey. Not only did it serve as a metaphor for many of the formal principles in Buddhism, but it also served as spiritual practice.

Most of the surfers that I know acknowledge the spiritual impact surfing has. While they may not recognize it inside a specific dogmatic framework, they are certainly aware of the connection between surfing and some larger cosmic mystery. One reason that Yogis's book is so fascinating is that he looks at surfing through the lens of a particular spirituality. This helps to give structure to thoughts about how surfing impacts people.

Looking at surfing through the lens of Buddhism is not, obviously, just a literary device used by Yogis. However, this particular perspective is what makes Saltwater Buddha unique and engaging. Buddhism is capable of embracing so many different paths of spirituality and surfing was one of the paths for Yogis. The structure of the book reflects this interconnection - spiritual insight is interwoven with the narrative of his life. Each piece serves to illuminate the other.

This is, of course, how life is actually experienced. We do not experience inner and outer experience as separate things. Instead, our spiritual/emotional/intellectual life is completely intertwined with our experiences in the world. We find meaning in the events of our lives and those same events give validation (or challenge) our worldview. It is difficult to capture this in an effective way and even more difficult to convey this to another person in a structured and coherent way. Again, this is a task that Yogis has admirably accomplished.

I have purchased several copies of the book because I plan to give them to friends; to both surfers and nonsurfers. I have found that Saltwater Buddha gives expression to many of the experiences I am having myself. I have found it so difficult to explain my experiences to people that don't surf - which makes Saltwater Buddha even more impressive. Yogis has found an effective way to give voice to the deeply emotional and spiritual aspects of an activity that many dismiss as idle fancy. We should all be thankful for this gift.

I am confident that this book will open your eyes to a different world; even if you have no interest in surfing or Buddhism.

If you are a new surfer, read this book.
If you are a master surfer, read this book.
Read it like you were a kid again and like you are discovering all this for the first time.
Give it to your non-surfer friends.
Give it to your buddies who have yet to realize the real gift of surfing despite their pro status on the waves.
Give it to your comrades who could have written it themselves.
Give it to your landlocked nephew in Montana.
Translating the wisdom of water and of Zen in his own life, Jaimal Yogis shares lessons that reach far beyond surfing.
Romantic and real, simple and deep, Saltwater Buddha reminds each of us that living with compassion and zeal each moment
is what makes a meaningful life.

You'll find a little of yourself in here, even if you don't surf....
By Bhavesh K. Patel
My copy of the book has already had a taste of Saltwater itself... a couple of days ago, some strong island winds blew it into the Caribbean ocean when I put the book down for a second, and I saw it floating away. I was about halfway through the book and was just at the point where the author was wrestling with his fear about the big wave at Third Bay. Rom had already taken a wave.

I tried scooping up the book but couldn't reach it, and every second it just got farther and farther away. As I quickly went through my options I realized if I didn't get the book now, there was a good chance I wouldn't be able to finish the book this week. I'm in Jamaica right now for the week, so I'm guessing it would be hard to get the book through Amazon or Kindle. And my fiancee is already excited about reading the book, too. So I stripped down into my underwear and dove into the ocean to get it. Granted, I wasn't in deep water or anything, but it's not like jumping into a swimming pool.

I swam back with the book, both of us wet and salty. After some hair dryer action and half a day of island sun, the book was almost dried out and the pages didn't stick together. Fortunately, I was able to finish reading the book.

Considering this is the first time I've ever dropped a book into the ocean, I think it's funny and fitting that it happened to be Saltwater Buddha.

I'm not a surfer, and a lot of times philosophy feels like mental masturbation to me. However, I finished this book in two days and plan on reading it again (that's amazing for me). I find it impressive that the author is able to interject thousands of years of philosophy into a humorous, reflective, and honest narrative without being heavy-handed or dogmatic about it. The author will apply a philosophical point to an event and present it as his contemplation as if the story were no more than a coffee conversation, and leave it for the reader to agree, disagree, or ignore it. He is able to connect a deep, profound Buddhist teaching to ordinary events that could happen to any of us in modern life.

I can relate to many of the events in the author's life, and I suspect many our generation can. Since reading the book, I am already starting to see things a bit differently, and that's a really neat thing. This is definitely a book worth reading.

Interrogating Inequality: Essays on Class Analysis, Socialism and Marxism, by Erik Olin Wright

This lively new collection from one of America’s leading sociologists covers a wide range of theoretical problems of interest to radical social scientists and political activists.

The book opens with a fascinating autobiographical essay exploring the challenges and benefits of being a Marxist scholar in the present era. Following this is a discussion of various issues in class analysis, with particular attention being paid to two overarching themes: class and inequality, and the relationship between class and power.

The second section of the book engages the problem of socialism as a possible future to capitalism. Wright attempts to clarify the conceptual status of socialism, and discusses why certain reforms such as basic income grants may ultimately require the introduction of some form of socialism for their full realization.

Interrogating Inequality concludes by examining the general problem of Marxism as a tradition of radical social theory. Three issues in particular are discussed: the central principles of “analytical Marxism” as a strategy for reconstructing Marxism as a social scientific theory; the relationship between Marxism and feminism as emancipatory social theories; and the prospects for Marxism in the aftermath of the collapse of communist regimes.

Imagining Tibet: Perceptions, Projections, and FantasiesFrom Brand: Wisdom Publications

In the past century, the Western view of Tibet has evolved from an exotic Shangri-la filled with golden idols and the promise of immortality, to a peaceful land with an enlightened society now ravaged by outside aggression. How and why did our perception change? How accurate are our modern conceptions of Tibet?

Imagining Tibet is a collection of essays that reveal these Western conceptions. Providing an historical background to the West's ever-changing relationship with Tibet, Donald Lopez, Jeffrey Hopkins, Jamyang Norbu, and other noted scholars explore a variety of topics - from Western perceptions of Tibetan approaches to violence, monastic life, and life as a nation in exile, to representations of Tibet in Western literature, art, environmentalism, and the New Age movement.

Review
"Imagining Tibet brings together some of our most thoughtful scholars to ruminate on the ways that mythology has become merged with what we take to be the reality of Tibet. A rich kaleidoscope of insights on this fascinating subject." (Orville Schell, author of Virtual Tibet: Searching for Shangri-La from the Himalayas to Hollywood)

"This illuminating collection of essays will be of interest to all Tibet-watchers, whatever their political or intellectual persuasion." (Melvyn C. Goldstein, author of The Snow Lion and the Dragon: China, Tibet, and the Dalai Lama)

"This important book shows how Tibet's realities are represented by others; it should be read by everyone interested in the origin and subtext of such fascination and imagery." (Tsering Shakya, Fellow in Tibetan Studies, School of Oriental and African Studies.)

"An important discussion of the western mythology of Tibet as Shangri-La. It includes three papers on foreign missionaries and scholars of Tibet, eight works on the western and Chinese views of Tibet as other, eight commentaries, and a synthesis by the editors. It also includes a foreword by Tsering Shakya, a bibliographic reference, biographical data, and a useful index. A delightful book." (Religious Studies Review)

Versatile and scholarly discussion
By inner exile
based, more often than not, on updated lectures, of which all but one - that of R. Barnett's excellent paper - were given at 'Mythos Tibet' symposium held in Bonn, in May 1996. Participants from various fields of Tibetology, social and cultural anthropology, historical studies, Tibet support activism, etc. guarantee multi- and interdisciplinary approach to interested laymen and specialists alike. Also included are bountiful illustrations, endnotes, incomplete index, and exhaustive bibliography.

The first segment focuses on 'Missionaries & Scholars', and the historical development of certain images they filtered through/(mis)construed. Rudolf Kaschewky - The image of Tibet in the West before the 19th c.: References from Herodotus & Claudius Ptolemaios through the Portuguese Jesuit Antonio Andrade's Ladakhi mission and his Italian brethren Ippolito Desideri's stay in ÜTsang less than a century later, to the Augustinian monk Antonius Georgius's "Alphabetum Tibetanum". John Bray - 19th and early 20th c. missionary images of Tibet. Per Kvaerne - Tibet images among researchers of Tibet.

Part 2 'The Sight of the "Other"' investigates a number of aspects of the Western (and Chinese) views of Tibet "against the backdrop provided by their social, political, and ideological contexts" (p. xii). Alex C. McKay - The British construction of an image of Tibet (highlight, henceforth abbreviated 'hl'): "The failure to establish an image of Tibet fully consistent with the Tibetans' self-image was partly due to both the inherently class-based and imperial perceptions of the cadre officers of [British India] and their alliance with the ruling elite within Tibet. But it was principally the result of Whitehall's refusal to recognize Tibetan independence" (p. 85) -- that is Tibet as a pawn in the 'Great Game' being played primarily by Britain, Russia (at the turn of the 20th c.) and China at the time. Peter H. Hansen - Tibet and the cinema in the early 20th century. Thomas Heberer - Old Tibet a hell on Earth? The myth of Tibet and Tibetans in Chinese art and propaganda (hl): the Hans' projections/misrepresentations labelled 'exotic-erotic, patriarchal-pedagogical, historical (or rather historicizing)-primitive'. Sadly missing from the list - and for that matter, not only from this very article but from the entire tome - is the priest-patron/guru-disciple/spirito-political (mchod-yon) angle that had been a determining factor in the relationship between the heads/luminaries of various Tibetan sects/schools/lineages and the imperial court; especially under the Mongol (Yuan) and Manchu (Qing) rule of China, and to a much lesser extent under the Ming dynasty as well. For more on this, consult the 1990s titles by Seyfort Ruegg.

Poul Pedersen - Tibet, Theosophy and the psychologization of Buddhism. Frank J. Korom - The role of Tibet in the New Age movement. Donald S. Lopez Jr. - The image of Tibet of the great mystifiers (hl): The renowned Buddhologist/Tibetologist singles out surgical fitter Cyril Hoskin turned New Age impostor under the widely known pen name Lobzang Rampa for analysis. He honestly admits that "it is not simply that the scholar needs the dilettante in order to define his identity. [LR] is rather like the glud, the ransom...offered to the demons in a Tibetan exorcism ceremony in exchange for the spirit of the possessed...So Rampa is given to the public, who does not care what the scholar says, and he derives his livelihood in the bargain. In return, the scholar, by renouncing the public, receives symbolic capital by disavowing that upon which he is ultimately dependent..." (p. 199). Peter Bishop - Not only a Shangri-la. Images of Tibet in Western literature. Heather Stoddard - The development in perception of Tibetan art. From golden idols to ultimate reality.

Part 3, dubbed 'Standpoints', contains: P. Jeffrey Hopkins - Tibetan monastic colleges. Rationality versus the demands of allegiance. Robert Barnett - '"Violated specialness". Western political representations of Tibet' (hl) deals with the exiled Tibetan government's changing tactics in light of their Western reception (political and civilian). "[T]hey [the Western one-worlder globalists] offered a language that could be used ambiguously so that the domestic audience would see it as criticizing China while Chinese officials might be persuaded that the criticisms were sufficiently mild so as not to be threatening to fundamental concerns [i.e., profit to a select few and oppression for the masses; one market, one consumer...] They avoided terms referring to total destruction, nationhood, territory, or status (p. 291). [A] shared linguistic framework within which Chinese and non-Chinese political forces can conceal their differences and, by exploiting its ambiguities, find themselves within what is in effect an alliance in diminishing or neutralizing the claims of Tibetan nationalists" (p. 297). Calculated charade and hypocricy, in other words! This rhymes with the remark Hugh E. Richardson (1905-2000; British Trade Agent at Gyantse and Officer-in-Charge at Lhasa from 1936 to 1940, 1946-7; and then in the capacity of representative for the independent government of India from 1947-50) had made: "[t]he British Government...sold the Tibetans down the river...I was profoundly ashamed of the government" (p. 86). For this latter authority's collected writings on Tibetan history and culture, try to obtain High Peaks, Pure Earth: Collected Writings on Tibetan History and Culture ed. Michael Aris (1946-99), London 1998.

Elliot Sperling's '"Orientalism" and aspects of violence in the Tibetan tradition' (hl) demystifies the non-violent notion of the Tibetan politico-religious arena by emphasizing the responsibility of the 5th Dalai lama Ngag-dbang bLo-bzang rgya-mtsho in recruiting the military aid commanded by the Qoshot/Oirat Mongol Gushri khan to overthrow the alliance that had been forged between the gTsang-pa rulers (sde-srid) and the Karma-pa (especially the Red Hat (zhwa-dmar) branch) sect then in power, thereby establishing dGe-lugs-pa theocracy/hierocracy in 1642. The author backs up his assertion by quoting relevant passages from the Great Fifth's autobiography (rang-thar) under the ultra short title "Dukúla". The same source was used by Samten G. Karmay, who arrived at a somewhat different conclusion in laying the blame for the Mongols' armed intervention on the councillor-secretary (zhal-ngo) bSod-nams chos-'phel's (1595-1657) treasonous falsification of his master's order (cf. 'The fifth Dalai lama and his reunification of Tibet' in: The Arrow and the Spindle, Studies in History, Myths, Rituals and Beliefs in Tibet vol. I: pp. 509-10, Kathmandu 1998; this paper originally appeared in French, in the compendium Lhasa, lieu du divin: La capitale des Dalaï-Lama au 17e siècle edited by Francoise Pommaret, Geneva 1997). Helena Norberg-Hodge - Tibetan culture as a model of ecological sustainability: based on field research in Ladakh, we assume. Graham E. Clarke - Tradition, modernity, and enviromental change in Tibet. Toni Huber - Shangri-la in exile. Representations of Tibetan identity and transnational culture. Jamyang Norbu - Behind the lost horizon. Demystifying Tibet. Dagyab Kyabgön rinpoche - Buddhism in the West and the image of Tibet.
In the concluding essay 'Between Shangri-la and feudal oppression. Attempting a synthesis' (hl), convenor-editors Thierry Dodin and Heinz Rather pull together the multifarious threads of former themes.

Getting Real About Tibet
By James S. Taylor
This is a great book if you want to learn more about the reality of Tibet, rather than the numerous romantic myths that have been spawned about it in the West. Having lived from my teens to mid-Twenties in a Canadian community where Tibetans were resettled, I can tell you first hand that they are no more good or bad in general than any other people group. Reading a book like this will save you a lot of wasted time in building up fantasies and having them disappointed. It will help you deal with the more obvious problems, like Lobsang Rampa's fictions, as well as gain a more balanced view of the often over-stated claims about Tibetan Buddhism, environmentalism, peacefulness, and all the other projected idealisms that go into changing the actual particulars of real Tibetan society and history into the Shangri-La of Western desire.

Amazon.com Review
Composed of 32 short chapters, the Diamond Sutra is nonetheless one of the monumental scriptures of Mahayana Buddhism. The great Sixth Patriarch of Zen, Huineng, is said to have achieved enlightenment after hearing a single line of this sutra. We can't promise sudden enlightenment, but we can tell you that Mu Soeng's version is one of the best. A former Zen monk, Mu Soeng takes us back in an extensive introduction to the beginnings of Buddhist sutras and traces their development up to the appearance of the Diamond Sutra in the third or fourth century. He also details why Zen Buddhists in particular are attracted to it. The Diamond Sutra is intended as an antidote to suffering, which is achieved through wisdom. It tells us that realizing the emptiness of all things is the key step on this path and that its articulation comes, paradoxically, in the boddhisattva ideal of saving all sentient beings. Paradox is at the heart of this classic sutra, and in extensive commentaries Mu Soeng unravels the paradoxes while explaining the challenging vocabulary. For an authoritative version of the Diamond Sutra, you can't do better, and notice the fluid language: So you should view all of the fleeting world: A star at dawn, a bubble in the stream; A flash of lightning in a summer cloud; A flickering lamp, a phantom, and a dream. --Brian Bruya

Review
"What a pleasure to read this lyrical rendering of the Diamond Sutra. Providing a full historical and cultural context for this great teaching inspires an understanding of its contemporary relevance, while the clarity of Mu Soeng's prose makes sophisticated Buddhist scholarship available to all interested readers." (Sylvia Boorstein, author of It's Easier Than You Think)

"Mu Soeng relates the sutra in fresh ways to early Buddhist social, cultural and institutional history... the messages of the text are given fresh expression in teaching encounters, poems, and delightful stories." (Prof. John Makransky, Dept. of Theology, Boston College)

"This book is a job well done. Mu Soeng clearly illuminates the fascinating world of ancient Buddhist thought and skillfully guides us through its historical evolution. For the first time, I began to understand this important history. And his insightful commentary on the Diamond Sutra makes accessible to us all the transforming wisdom of this profound text. I highly recommend this book for all those wishing an in-depth exploration of the enlightened mind." (Joseph Goldstein, author of A Heart Full of Peace and Insight Meditation: The Practice of Freedom)

"Mu Soeng's interpretation of the Diamond Sutra is an attempt to present traditional Buddhist insights, as found in one of the fundamental scriptures of Mahayana Buddhism, in a modern or post-modern form appropriate for contemporary practitioners and others interested in making ancient wisdom relevant and vital for today. Together with a translation based largely on Conze's rendition of a Sanskrit text, Mu Soeng, a Zen practitioner, presents his detailed running commentary, which fuses traditional Buddhist lore with the contemporary approaches of quantum physics and deconstructionist literary theory. Accompanied by a lengthy introduction, Mu Soeng's work, which is in some ways reminiscent of the insightful commentaries of Thich Nhat Hanh, should be of great interest to all those who seek modern and post-modern relevance in ancient Buddhist thought." (Jonathan Silk, Yale University)

"Mu Soeng's commentary on the Diamond Sutra is a combination Buddhist history lesson, philosophical investigation, and thorough contemporary reading of this core Mahayana text... Mu Soeng applies both scholarship and years of dharma training to his analysis... [A] fresh and inspiring exposition of core Mahayana philosophy..." (Inquiring Mind)

A Work of Clarity and Scholarship
By Cliff Heegel
This is an excellent book. Mu Soeng writes with a clarity that makes very difficult concepts understandable. At the same time, he presents a work of excellent historical scholarship that will educate, inform, and even entertain those readers wanting greater depth in understanding the Diamond Sutra and Mahayana Buddhism.
When I bought this book I expected a treatise that would clarify the philosophical depth of the Diamond Sutra. I was not disappointed. Mu Soeng's explanations of the Diamond Sutra clearly explain this paradoxical sutra without trivializing the material.
I was surprised when I discovered the wealth of historical material in the book on the development of Mahayana thought and the bodhisattva ideal. Normally such material might bore me, but somehow Mu Soeng weaves an historical tale that infuses the story of the development of Mahayana Buddhism with a sense of excitement.
I have studied and practiced Buddhism (Zen in particular) for almost 30 years. This is an excellent book that should be on the shelves of anyone who wants greater depth and clarity regarding the Diamond Sutra, the bodhisattva ideal, and Mahayana thought.

Mahayana Revealed
By J. B. Stroup
The Diamond Sutra is the core of the Buddhist Mahayana tradition and displays the paradoxical and mystical nature of Buddhism. Mu Soeng has written an extraordinary book for Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike. It is transformative for readers from almost any spiritual tradation, and the most articulate and absorbing commentary on the Buddhist Mahayana tradition as well as the Diamond Sutra. Thich Nhat Hanh's commentary on the same sutra pales by comparison. The book's first section is the most elaborate and remarkable exposition and history of Mahayana available in a popular text. Mu Soeng places both Buddhism and the Mahayana tradition in the historical and cultural context of the times, showing the remarkable creativity of the Buddha's views. His exposition of shunyata or emptiness is as close to human comprehension as we are likely to get.

An Excellent Commentary for an Important Buddhist Sutra
By Susanna Hutcheson
The Diamond Sutra is one of the most important works in the Buddhist religion. It is one of a number of great sutras that make up what would be considered the equivalent of the Christian Bible. This sutra, like all the sutras and much of the Oriental writing such as the Bhagavad-Gita, is written in the form of a conversation . . . in this case it's written between the Buddha and , a monk by the name of Sabuthi.
Buddha is speaking to a large group of monks and others but the conversation is with this one individual.
The book is very intelligently divided into three parts. The first part consists of a history of this sutra and Buddhism in general. And it very well written.
The second part is the Diamond Sutra in a translated text and commentary and finally there is an appendix which consists of the raw text of the diamond Sutra. I find this an excellent way to put the commentary together.
While the book itself is relatively short with only 167 pages., it manages to give a tremendous amount of valuable information about this delightful sutra.
I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of historical data in this book. The author, Mu Soeng, gives a tremendous amount of historical background, as well as explains the differences in some of the various schools of Buddhism. This is most fascinating.
This material is written in a very easy to understand way and it is exceptionally well researched.
The background of the Diamond Sutra is well-documented in this book. Its relevance to the various schools of Buddhism are given quite a bit of space in the book, which I found very useful.
The second part of the book is the translated text and commentary. I had some trouble with this section. But perhaps the reason I had this difficulty, is explained by the Buddha himself who said in this sutra, "This sutra will be called the . . . The Diamond -- Cutter Wisdom That has Gone Beyond, because it has the capacity to cut through illusions and afflictions and bring us to the sure awakening, and by this title you will know it"
The Buddha also said in his discussion with Sabuthi (the monk Lord Bud dah was talking to in the sutra), that Sabuthi should know that the meaning of this sutra is beyond comprehension and discussion. He added that the fruit that results from receiving and practicing this sutra is beyond comprehension and discussion also.
So perhaps the fact that many things in this sutra were still left esoteric is because that's the way it was intended to be.
To give you an example of just one of the hundreds of areas that I felt were not commented upon enough for me understand is the following:
"Therefore, Sabuthi, a bodhisattva, detaching him or herself from all ideas, should rouse the desire for utmost, supreme, and perfect awakening. He or she should produce thoughts that are unsupported by forms, sounds, smells, tastes, tangible objects, or mind objects, unsupported by Dharma, unsupported by no-Dharma, unsupported by everything. And why? Because all supports are no supports. This is the reason why the Buddha teaches that the bodhisattva should practice generosity without dwelling on form. Sabuthi, the reason he practices generosity is to benefit all beings." The Buddha also says that there is no Dharma by which he has fully known the utmost, right, and perfect awakening. And the Dharma that he has fully known and demonstrated is neither grasped nor elusive. Therefore he teaches all dharmas are the Buddha's own special dharmas. Finally to give another example of the difficulty in understanding the sutra, allow me to quote one more time from the Diamond Sutra.
"Know, World Honored One, he does not, why? Because to create a harmonious Buddha field is not to create a harmonious Buddha field, and therefore he is known as creating a harmonious Buddha field."
Now I realized that this is written eons ago. I know that it is esoteric in nature. But I would have liked the author to explain some of these areas better. I don't feel that a person should have to be a Buddhist scholar with many years background to be able to understand this lovely sutra.
But having said that, I think the author has done a superior job in writing a book that explains the eloquence and the beauty and the deep richness of Buddhism. Further, he has described the history in such manner that it brings Buddhism alive and makes it very real for the reader.
And so if a person is either well entrenched in Buddhism of any school, or if an individual is very interested in Buddhism and wants to gain a greater knowledge of it, I highly recommend this book. It is a wonderful work and well worth reading. I would advise the reader to read it more than one time, however. Because that will be the only way that he or she is going to be able to grasp the full meaning of both the commentary and this sutra.
I would give another star to the book if only it could explain what more of the text means or even gave the reader a few options from which to choose. But this being an ancient text and esoteric at best, perhaps that can never be done.
One should be aware too that Mu Soeng comes from the Zen tradition and some of the material cannot help but be colored by that. However, I found that he did an excellent job at being objective. So people from other traditions should be able to enjoy this book as well as people of the Zen tradition.
