About the Author
Kurt Spellmeyer is an award-winning teacher and scholar in the English department at Rutgers University in New Jersey and a Rinzai Zen Master. He is the author of Arts of Living: Reinventing the Humanities for the Twenty-First Century and several other books.

Robert Thurman holds the Jey Tsong Khapa Chair in Indo-Tibetan Buddhist Studies at Columbia University. After education at Philips Exeter and Harvard, he studied Tibet and Tibetan Buddhism for almost thirty years as a personal student of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. He has written both scholarly and popular books, and has lectured widely all over the world. As President of the American Institute for Buddhist Studies, he convened the First Inner Science Conference with His Holiness the Dalai Lama at Amherst College in 1984. He is also a founding trustee of Tibet House New York.

Countering the Apocalyptic Mind -- but with what?

This is a frustrating book. Kurt Spellmeyer is a graceful writer, and it is easy to imagine him as a spellbinding lecturer. (He is a professor in the English Department at Rutgers University as well as leader of the Cold Mountain Sangha in New Jersey.) His critique of the apocalyptic thinking of the Judeo-Christian tradition is very strong.

Spellmeyer defines "apocalyptic history," which he calls the founding myth of the West, as the view of our existence as "...a road, a journey through the ages that will lead to the transcendence of time itself. The journey begins with the Creation and it ends with the Apocalypse." This world ends, the righteous go to Heaven and the wicked to Hell. It is what he calls a "world-despising" view -- this world is fallen, and what matters is what happens in the afterlife. No need to care for the ecosystem, it will all be destroyed soon enough. A twist on the other-worldly apocalypse is the idea of creating a utopia here on Earth, which he argues is also a view that despises the world as it is, leaving a path of destruction in the quest to create a perfect world as in the 20th century in Russia and Germany.

Buddhism, of course, sees impermanence as the bedrock reality. There is no teleological time, no End present in the Beginning, but rather an Eternal Now in constant flux. Time is not an arrow, but rather both cyclical and also at a deeper level an illusion. It is a world-embracing view that encourages living with uncertainty and impermanence and treating all sentient beings with compassion, for we are all connected.

However, Spellmeyer leaves the reader, despite his explicit arguments to the contrary, with the impetus to quietism rather than action. This is not unique to this writer or book, of course, it is endemic to the historic Buddhism of the East (monastic orders that were supported by royal patronage and in turn supported the status quo) and the contemporary Buddhism of the West (a spirituality of the comfortable classes who cultivate inner peace rather than social justice).

Nagarjuna, the great Mahayana philosopher, developed the understanding of absolute and relative truth. Spellmeyer focuses on the Absolute Truth of Emptiness -- not only are there no unchanging Selves, there are no unchanging Things in the Universe. This is not nihilism, but rather Everything Connected and Interpenetrating. He does say that with this realization one is moved to compassion. But he does not emphasize this enough. Socially engaged Buddhism emerged because so much of Buddhism is turned inward and is not socially engaged. If We Are One, then how can I see you harmed and not act?

If Spellmeyer had taken his one reference to the Boddhisattva Vow on page 120 ("I vow to liberate all sentient beings") and expanded on it he might have produced a different and better book. He quotes Te-Ching saying "...the '[T]hree [P]oisons of delusion, anger and greed have no beginning and no end, and yet the bodhisattva's vow is always to help people get free from them." This focus on compassionate action is at odds with the main argument of BUDDHA AT THE APOCALYPSE, which is that trying to change the world is part of the problem.

Yes, the Absolute Truth is that everything is already perfect and there is nothing that needs to be done. But there are many Relative Truths that we must pay attention to in order to make our way through the material world, not just for personal survival but for the liberation of all sentient beings. Ecocide is taking place and if we can act to stop it we have an ethical obligation to do so. It's hard to be liberated when you're dead from habitat destruction and catastrophic climate change -- relative truth. Carpe diem. If we are truly Awake as was the Buddha we will do no less.

Not just for students of Zen

This book is not just for devotees of Zen Buddhism. I've have never had much interest in attending a Zen retreat or spending hours meditating, but I still found the book enlightening (in the traditional Western sense, anyway).

Written for a general audience of readers raised in Western culture and curious about their place in the universe, this book offers surprising insights and many "Aha!" moments. Moving through a series of vignettes about Western culture, history and current events as well as Zen teachings, Spellmeyer nimbly advances his view that reality extends beyond the limits imposed by traditional Western thought and religious belief.

The book is also a lively read. I'll never hear a sermon about the Prodigal Son or read about Paul Krugman's economic theories without thinking about Spellmeyer's take on both subjects.

An informative and serene read

Spellmeyer writes *Buddha at the Apocalypse* with a graceful lyricism, a soft and gentle voice, which seems to be directly speaking to each reader individually. He has the power, through profound and original observations, to make us re-examine our modus operandi, and in fact to re-think our every assumption, many of which we might have taken for granted. At the opening of this book, Spellmeyer cites the story of Creation, as told in the Book of Genesis, and points out how God and Time are inextricably interrelated, as alongside creation there is also destruction because of the sin of temptation. But Spellmeyer sees life in a different, more timeless way. As his book weaves through Zen teachings and tales, and beautiful Zen gardens, we come to appreciate how, as Spellmeyer says, "...we can plainly see existence as a circle of life and death, a circle that keeps turning for ever." There are many quotable moments such as this, which make us reflective, and make us feel serene. All told, this is a valuable and profound book.

An energetic read.

Once again Paul Feyerabend has produced an energetic commentary on the modern philosophical constructs of the philosophy of science, especially those of Popper. In this, his second book, he concentrates on the main on answering negative comments on his earlier book "Against Method" by various philsophers of science such as Popper and Putnam. Although this seems to occupy his attentions there are chapters on various aspects such as Xenophanes, Greek Gods, a fascinating chapter on Aristotle's theory of the continuum, the role of theories in science, relativism and a very interesting and rare discussion of Mach's theory of research.
As usual his groundwork is thorough, although not as detailed as that in "Against Method", and full of interesting asides which both support the argument and fascinate the reader. His energy is infectious although some of his comments are quite abrasive especially those concerning Popper. It compares well to the first book and is far better than his last "Conquest of Abundance" which seemed tired by comparison and lacking the zest of the earlier works such as this one and the first. To me, the two outstanding chapters are the ones on Mach and Aristotle which alone make the book worth buying. Feyerabend is a rare breed of philosopher in that he does not construct systematic theories but rather deconstructs existing ones and criticises them consistently at the same time giving credence to his ideas of relativism which are quite at odds with the usual interpretation of this idea. Feyerabend does not constrain himself overly in the sense of a solid theoretical basis prefering to remain loose and free to move. There are many advantages to this process although it does not introduce new ideas or concepts which by themselves could lead to further insights, this is possible without stagnation or a crystallisation of views which often occurs. He is also aware of his own propensity to intellectualise, something which he tries to supplement with a kind of living discourse which partly compensates.

Defence of relativism

This is really a collection of essays, rather than a single sustained argument. The first essay on "Notes on Relativism" is interesting in its characterisation of different versions of the notorious idea. The Feyerabendian theme is present throughout all the essays: that 'there is no single method of discovering truth in science' is extended to other areas more explicitly, esp. cultural phenomena - e.g. "Progress in Philosophy, Science and the Arts". Some essays are focused on topics of debate that arise out of Against Method - e.g. "Putnam on Incommensurability". As usual, he presents an audacious defense of absurd and unpopular ideas - e.g. that the Greek gods were real, and that Ernst Mach, vis-a-vis Einstein, wasn't so philosophically backward after all. The essay on Popper is typically uncharitable, and even mean, but entertaining for precisely that reason.

A BROAD COLLECTION OF FEYERABEND'S ESSAYS

Paul Karl Feyerabend (1924-1994) was an Austrian-born philosopher of science who taught philosophy at UC Berkeley; he also wrote books such as Against Method, The Tyranny of Science, Killing Time: The Autobiography of Paul Feyerabend, Science in a Free Society, etc.that h

He wrote in the Introduction to this 1987 book, “The essays collected in this volume deal with cultural diversity and cultural change. They try to show that diversity is beneficial while uniformity reduces our joys and our (intellectual, emotional, material) resources… I shall criticize two ideas that have often been used to make Western expansion intellectually respectable---the idea of Reason and the idea of Objectivity.”

He suggests, “For every statement, theory, point of view believed (to be true) with good reason there exist arguments showing a conflicting alternative to be at least as good, or even better.” (Pg. 76) In a later essay, he illustrates, “there exists no ‘objective’ scientific study of the comparative effectiveness of Western and indigenous procedures in many fields. Even medicine can only offer isolated reports of successes, and equally isolated reports of the failures of non-Western medical practices: but the overall picture is far from clear.” (Pg. 87)

He pointedly argues, “‘It seems to me quite obvious,’ says a critic, ‘that we know more about the world than people did in the days of Parmenides and Aristotle.’ … but who is the ‘we’ the critic is talking about? Is he talking about himself? Then the statement is quite obviously false---there is no doubt that Aristotle, on many subjects, knew more than he does… There are lots of things unknown to ‘us’ Western intellectuals but known to other people… It may be true that the sum total of the facts that now lie buried in scientific journals, textbooks, letters and hard discs by far exceeds the sum total of the knowledge that comes from other traditions. But what counts is not number but usefulness and accessibility. How much of this knowledge is useful, and to whom?... we find lots of problems, but no obvious answers. It is therefore necessary to go beyond empty slogans and to start THINKING.” (Pg. 160-161)

In an essay of Galileo, he explains, “As far as I am concerned the best way of describing a historical conflict is to introduce the INDIVIDUALS that created it, to describe their temperament, their interests, their hopes and ambitions, the information at their disposal, their social background, the individuals and institutions they felt loyal to and that supported them in turn, and many similar things.” (Pg. 247-248)

He responds to a letter, “you say that there is ‘cultural chaos’ without a unifying bond… That sounds nicely abstract and philosophical but I wonder how closely you have considered the matter. Have you compared the clientèle of soap opera, or of Reverend Falwell, or of the Super Bowl with the clientele of modern art, or of the rationalism/irrationalism issue in philosophy? Do you have the numbers?... I don’t think you have… even the simplest calculation shows that you cannot possibly be right: there are now 10,000 philosophers teaching in the U.S. and in Canada. Most of them are obedient servants of the status quo, but let us assume that 25% are creators of disorder… let us again assume that 25% [of their students] become committed followers of their chaos-creating teachers. That would make 40,000. Do you know how many millions are watching [the TV show] Dallas? How many watched the Super Bowl?...compare the amount of money that is being used to uphold chaos with the amount of money that supports monotony… [I] contest your thesis of the pervasiveness of chaos.” (Pg. 275-276)

In the title essay, he says, “My main thesis on this point is: the events and results that constitute the sciences have no common structure; there are no elements that occur in every scientific investigation but are missing elsewhere…”(Pg. 281) He adds later, “the best education consists in immunizing people against systematic attempts at education… even the most stupid and inhumane point of view has merit and deserves a good defence.” (Pg. 316)

This broad collection of essays makes an excellent introduction to Feyerabend’s work, and makes for stimulating and thought-provoking reading.

S. K. Baker's Rail Atlas Great Britain & Ireland, 10th Edition, may be the most complete railway atlas of those countries ever published. With a hundred pages of color maps (and a thorough, helpful index), this volume seems to cover every single railway route in the British Isles.

What is truly impressive is that this book's maps go far beyond showing what cities and towns--and junctions--and roads--are connected by rail. Here are shown single and multiple tracks, tunnels, and stations. Here are shown signal boxes, sidings, and freightliner terminals. Here are shown proposed routes. And there is more. This book is astounding in its own way.

About the Author

David E. James is on the faculty of the School of Cinematic Arts at the University of Southern California. His books include The Most Typical Avant-Garde: History and Geography of Minor Cinemas in Los Angeles.

Adam Hyman has been Executive Director and Programmer for Los Angeles Filmforum since 2003. A documentary filmmaker, he has produced and/or written a variety of historical and archeological films that have aired on PBS, the History Channel, the Learning Channel, and others.

About the Author
Martine Batchelor spent ten years in a Korean monastery studying Zen Buddhism. She works as a lecturer and spiritual advisor, and her books include Principles of Zen, Walking on Lotus Flowers, and Buddhism and Ecology. She lives in the South of France.

Stephen Batchelor has studied in Buddhist monasteries in India, Switzerland, and Korea. An accomplished writer and photographer, he has translated, written, and contributed to many books about Buddhism including Buddhism Without Beliefs, Verses from the Center, and The Tibet Guide. He lives in the South of France.

Excellent Guide to Meditation

Meditation for Life is an excellent introduction to various methods of meditation. Batchelor includes an eclectic mix of techniques and approaches from various types of Buddhism (e.g.,. Zen, Tibetan). The book is filled with practical, non-esoteric techniques for beginner through experienced meditators, with enough depth for ongoing practice, yet distilled so you can grasp basic concepts without having to wade through a lot of text. My only qualms are that the photography, although thoughtful, looks low resolution (especially in this large format), and I find the book a bit bulky to hold and carry. But these are quibbles that I can easily overlook because the book contains so many helpful gems. (Perhaps it could be reissued in a smaller format, in the same or a larger type size, but smaller pages and margins...)

Extremely helpful

Although a dedicated Buddhist practitioner I am still relatively new to the actual concepts....Martine Batchelor explains these in concise, incisive detail without over doing it and keeps the examples short and on point.
I especially found helpful her personal stories from life experience illustrating that even someone who lived an idealistic life as a Buddhist nun in Korea had problems not only in the monastery itself, but coming back into the western world we inhabit.

Very well written, not intimidating or overwhelming in any way. Just reading the book makes you feel quiet and calm and makes you look forward to your meditation.
