About the Author
Lama Thubten Zopa Rinpoche is the Spiritual Director of the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition (FPMT), a worldwide network of Buddhist centers, monasteries, and affiliated projects, including Wisdom Publications. Rinpoche was born in 1946 in the village of Thami in the Solo Khumbu region of Nepal near Mount Everest. His books include Transforming Problems into Happiness, How to Be Happy, and Ultimate Healing. He lives in Aptos, California.

This book is truly a rare and precious treasure. There are many books out about Buddhism, but for those interested in actually practicing in order to subdue their minds, this one is particularly relevant. Within it you will discover the essential key to transforming the mind; the true doorway that differentiates spiritual practice from mere spiritual materialism.

I have been reading a lof of books from mainly well know spiritual leader, such as the Dalai Lama, Gandhi, Thich Nhat Hanh, and others. Lama Zopa Rinpoche in this book "door to satisfaction" as a way to communicate similar ideas which touched me at a much deeper level. After being done reading this book, I will not put it on the shelf but keep it on my bedside table, as it is a reference to return to. It opened the desire to not only practice Dharma in my own mind and home but to also go to Nepal and take a course from this buddhist master. I hope sincerely that this book will be as beneficial for you as it is for me. Namaste.

About the Author
Cyrus Stearns first began to study Buddhism with Dezhung Rinpoche (1906-87) in 1973. Since that time he has studied with and translated for many Tibetan teachers, especially Dezhung Rinpoche and Chogye Trichen Rinpoche. Cyrus has a PhD in Buddhist Studies from the University of Washington and lived for about eight years in Nepal, India, and Southeast Asia. Among his other publications are The Buddha from Dolpo, Hermit of Go Cliffs, and Luminous Lives. Cyrus has three daughters and lives on Whidbey Island, Washington.

He begins with a complex essay discussing the fall of the Roman Empire in comparison with G.E.M de Ste Croix's The Class Struggle in the Ancient Greek World. He then provides a compelling explanation for the development of modernism and modernist culture. He examines and intelligently and sympathetically critiques wide-ranging analysis of the development of human society by Lord Runciman and Michael Mann. From examining the Italian liberal Norberto Bobbio, to the Brazillian communitarian of Roberto Unger, and to the czech sociologist Ernest Gellner, he moves on to discuss the nature of witchcraft with Carlo Ginzburg, pluralism and the development of liberty in Isaiah Berlin, and nationalism and national character with Fernand Braudel. Finally he discusses Francis Fukuyama and asks whether Marxism has any meaning after the end of history. He concedes nothing to sentiment, but still provides a clear defence. If there is a weakness in the book, it lies in a perhaps too sympathetic account of German diplomatic historian Andreas Hilgruber, and a surprisingly uncritical citing of Vaclav Havel. But otherwise Anderson consistently shows a profoundity and range of reading that makes the intellectuals of the New Republic and the New Yorker appear insular and narrowminded.

About the Author
Sulak Sivaraksa has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize and received the Right Livelihood Award and the Gandhi Millennium Award. He is the founder of the International Network of Engaged Buddhists and more than a dozen other international organizations. Born in 1933, the year Thailand emerged from absolute monarchy into democracy, his life has been intimately bound up with Southeast Asia's modern history. He was a Buddhist monk for two years, and then completed his higher education in Great Britain, where he also worked as a writer and commentator for the BBC. He is the intellectual voice of his generation in Asia, best known for his indefatigable efforts to bring people together into community, common work, and a shared vision of a more enlightened world. Sulak is author of Seeds of Peace: A Buddhist Vision for Renewing Society and more than 100 other books and monographs. He lives in Thailand.

Donald K. Swearer is the Charles and Harriet Cox McDowell Emeritus Professor of Religion, Swarthmore College. From 2004 to 2010, he served as director of the Center for the Study of World Religions at Harvard Divinity School. Although he has taught widely in the field of Asian and comparative religions, his research has focused on Theravada Buddhism in Southeast Asia, especially in Thailand. His recent monographs in that field include: The Buddhist World of Southeast Asia, Becoming the Buddha: The Ritual of Image Consecration in Thailand, The Sacred Mountains of Northern Thailand and Their Legends, and The Legend of Queen Cama: Bodhiramsi's Camadevivamsa, a Translation and Commentary. He currently lives in Claremont, California.

About the Author
Don Conroy is a man of many talents - writer, television presenter, a naturalist, an environmentalist and a working artist who has had many exhibitions. Perhaps best known to the young people of Ireland for his appearances as Uncle Don to Zig & Zag (now with Channel 4's Big Breakfast) on RTé's The Den, Don has also had a TV series of his own - Painting for Fun, from which came a previous successful book. He has a weekly slot on RTé television. Don studied life drawings and culture at the National College of Art and then worked as designer and illustrator for advertising agencies as well as in the theatre. A keen naturalist, he is actively involved in conservation, a member of the Irish Wildlife Conservancy and many other protection agencies. Don is the author of many books for children and young adults. He travels the country promoting his books and his conservation message and is in constant demand for school/library visits and literary events.

About the Author
Pabongka Rinpoche (1878-1941) was one of the great lamas of the twentieth century. He was the root lama of both tutors of the present Dalai Lama and the teacher of many of the other Tibetan lamas who have been bringing the Dharma to the West.

Trijang Rinpoche (1901-81) was the foremost student of Pabongka Rinpoche, the Junior Tutor of the present Dalai Lama, and the root lama of many of the first generation of great Gelug masters to teach in the West.

Michael Richards is an Australian scholar who lived in the Tibetan exile community of Dharamsala for many years.

A dharma gem in the palms of our hand

With great respect to the authors, this review is NOT a critic's review of the contents of this classical work. This is merely a humble end-user review to share on how to benefit from the use of this book.

The current 3rd blue cover paperback edition of is a refinement of the wonderfully translated Buddhist Work from a lecture by the Tibetan Buddhist monk and teacher,Pabongka Rinpoche to the author Trijang Rinpoche, a Tibetan Buddhist monk.

is a dharma gem in Tibetan, a classic now translated in English many years ago, it is 898 pages of "executive summary" of the by the great Tibetan Buddhist Master, Je Tsong Khapa.

The author, Trijang Rinpoche had attended and faithfully documented in Tibetan language the essence of the entire series of lectures taught by his master, Pabongka Rinpoche, who had taught the great teachings of Je Tsong Khapa over 24 days during a retreat in Tibet during the 1920s.

After months of reading along with its contemporary Tibetan to Chinese (Taiwanese) translated version ; making comparisons side by side, chapter by chapter, and often word for word with both translated work ; I am convinced that the Tibetan-English translator of , Mr. Michael Richards has dutifully translated the great works of the author into from Tibetan to English, choice of words in English to the closest possible meaning in Tibetan and/or Chinese, he virtually has left no stone unturned. It is indeed great joy to read his work in English.

To be able to read in English and to meditate on the teachings is probably the next closest thing to hearing a concise dharma lecture on the path to enlightenment delivered by the author himself to the reader in English.

The author summarises the key points of the systematic approach to meditation in the by Je Tsong Khapa in a manner which benefits all Buddhists on the Mahayana-Vajrayana path because Je Tsong Khapa's teachings is influential across all schools of Tibetan Buddhism and the contents is presented in a story telling-lecture-narration manner.

Nowadays, some Tibetan Buddhist monks from the Gelupa/Gelug school use as a 24 days comprehensive course outline to deliver lectures on to the Buddhist community on Je Tsong Khapa's or . This shows the significance of the author's work.

For Buddhist practitioners on the spiritual path, is a recommend must read, essentially it teaches how one would benefit by understanding and putting into practice the essence of Buddha's teachings in a single path with three stages.

Chapter One of is the most important chapter, it presents the entire book in a nutshell and expands into details for the remaining chapters.

Argubly, some readers may be amused, and even confused by the numerous story telling examples, analogies and metaphors,any misunderstandings, I suppose is largely due to differences in Tibetan culture with modern culture, a difference in time and place when the lectures were delivered. If such examples had been helpful and useful to listeners of the actual lectures at that time, our modern readers should be able to gain the insight and find relevance if they could put these "story telling" contents and examples in into its modern context. This is essential the most important DIY part for the readers.

When reading and studying a serious work and profound as the serious readers require to be focused and invest meditative effort. More importantly, learning requires right motivation, demands patience,constant reflection and right thoughts on the part of the reader, like that of a student with an inquisitive mind.

The real benefit to derive from the study of the Buddha Dharma cannot be attained without putting into actual practice the teachings of the path to enlightenment in this book.

For the Buddhist practitioner, who studies and meditate using , this book is indeed a dharma gem in the palms of our hands. A gem to behold. Don't just read it,understand, meditate and practice.

For a comparative study with a similar contemporary work in the Mahayana (Chinese) Pureland-Zen Buddhism Tradition, the English translation of Venerable Yin-shun's translated from Chinese, to English by Wing Yeung, Translator is highly recommended.

My only suggestion to the publisher,that it would be a great service to the readers if they could improve on the binding of this thick paperback book by strengthening it and/or to release a hardcover bounded edition, surely a gem such as this should be able stand the test of time without its pages falling apart after a third read.

Every thing you need!

This book is the one that I have been waiting for. It's the best guid to Tibetan Buddhism you can ever have. Being from a small town in the Mid West it has not been easy to find a teacher or Sangha. This book will allow me to explore more of myself and prepare me for additional teachings in the future. My hats off to the seller.
