The book thus challenges conventional feminist interpretations that see women principally as the victims of male-controlled economies, institutions and power structures, and calls for a major re-evaluation of the scope and significance of female criminality in this era. It will be ofinterest to scholars, students and those interested in the fields of gender studies, social history and the history of crime. A clever and iconoclastic dual portrait of the NASA space program and Star Trek fandom from a feminist perspective. Penley (Film and Women's Studies/Univ. of Calif., Santa Barbara) grew up near Cape Canaveral, and her childhood was shaped in large part by predawn dashes with her father to watch rockets being launched. These unusual excursions, mixed with a heavy dose of Kennedy-era liberalism, led to Penley's lifelong love of NASA and of the whole notion of space exploration. But her vision of the program, while positive overall, is hardly idealized. Using the Christa McAuliffe/Challenger tragedy as a base for her extensive criticisms in the first half of the book, Penley shows persuasively that women in the space program have consistently been held to a different--usually higher--standard; that the choice of McAuliffe and the publicity surrounding her training were sexist and demeaning; and that NASA covered up the full extent of the disaster and then memorialized the event poorly. The second half of the book deals mostly with the homoerotic cottage porn industry that has grown up around Star Trek. Penley is sufficiently insightful and persuasive to make this leap in the narrative entirely convincing. Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock are seen in these fantasies (which are largely invented by heterosexual women, according to Penley) as gay lovers. NASA/Trek offers a witty illumination of the strong relationship between the cultures of NASA and Star Trek, arguing that it exists not just in each co-opting the other's symbols and characters (Nichelle Nichols, Lt. Uhura on the original show, was a successful recruiter of women and minorities for NASA), but in their sharing of themes and goals for the future. "Not in Front of the Klingons": What does NASA and Star Trek have in Common?

In many ways this is a very unusual book by Constance Penley (Professor of Film Studies, University of California, Santa Barbara), but one that offers a fascinating feminist analysis of NASA, spaceflight, and the culture of science fiction. Penley describes first what can only be called a love triangle between the American public, NASA, and "Star Trek." She finds it an essential element of American society from the 1960s to the present, and despite betrayals and sometimes rocky straits this relationship has endured.

Penley analyses this love triangle in what is essentially a two step process. The first section (pp. 11-96) involves an exploration of the place of women in the institutional setting of NASA and the human spaceflight endeavor that it has managed throughout its history. Most close observers would probably agree with Penley that NASA's approach to women in space has been strained from the beginning. For the longest time its leaders resisted incorporating women into the astronaut corps, reflecting both the larger mores of society and the "boys with their toys" attitudes of engineering and machineshops. Finally, the agency selected several women as astronauts in 1978, among them Sally Ride and Judith Resnick. Ride finally broke down that barrier in 1983 by flying on the Space Shuttle in STS-7, 24 years after the creation of NASA. Other women went on to fly on the shuttle, including the teacher Christa McAuliffe who died in the Challenger accident in January 1986.

Penley expends considerable effort unpacking the relationship of NASA to the general public in this story. She finds that NASA is not so much a chauvinistic organization as it is a reflection of the deep ambivalence of society toward women and technology. She notes that this is present in NASA, in the military, and even in such daily activities as automobile purchasing and servicing. She points to the efforts of the women astronauts to fit into the larger NASA culture and to be one of the team. Judith Resnick, who also died on Challenger in 1986, typically said: "I am an astronaut. Not a woman astronaut. Not a Jewish astronaut. An astronaut" (p. 29). This attempt to fit in, to colonize the male domain of spaceflight, presents Penley with a remarkable opportunity to discuss the manner in which American culture intrudes on the supposedly cold logic of technological decisions.

The second part of the book (pp. 97-145) discusses the role of "Star Trek" in American society, with some analysis of how the popular television show was also related to NASA and its efforts. Penley especially delves into the trekker culture of K/S "slash" novels, erotic literature in which Kirk and Spock have an ongoing romantic involvement. Engaging in this, as well as a range of other fan behavior, allows participants to appropriate the crew "family" aboard the Star Ship Enterprise, the ideals of the United Federation of Planets, and the challenges of moving beyond the humdrum of existence on Earth to a more exciting and rewarding life within the broader cosmos.

Penley suggests that the homosexual relationship of Kirk and Spock in these various fan-produced stories stand in for a utopian vision of relationships and a positive future. Spock, she notes, occupies a place in relation to Kirk that women would like to occupy in relation to men, as both are essentially equal and not subject to powerful lovers. Perhaps, the relationship between NASA and "Star Trek" is similar to the K/S relationship. Both need and respect the other, and like Kirk and Spock neither publicly acknowledges this relationship. NASA/TREK, therefore, offers an analysis of a critical symbiotic relationship in modern society. As Penley persuasively argues, the relationship of society/science is also fundamentally illuminated through this study.

This is an engaging, provocative book that deserves serious consideration by any student of spaceflight and society.

For anyone interested in how popular culture affects society

This book is an excellent critical look at the intersections between popular science, sexuality, and Star Trek. The first section looks at the dialogic interaction between the fiction of Star Trek and the reality of NASA. It is fascinating both for those interested in the history of women in the US space program and for Trekkers, giving little known facts about NASA and providing insightful, well-written analysis. The second half of the book analyzes slash fan fiction, using actual stories and images to explore how and why women express their own utopian longings through the sexual relationship of Kirk and Spock. Penley's book is thouroughly researched, clearly presented, and well-written throughout.

About the Author
Born in the Tsang region of Tibet in 1923, Geshe Lhundub Sopa is both a spiritual master and a respected academic. He rose from a humble background to complete his geshe studies at Sera Je Monastic University in Lhasa with highest honors and was privileged to serve as a debate opponent for the Dalai Lama's own geshe examination in 1959. He moved to New Jersey in the United States in 1963 and in 1967 began teaching in the Buddhist Studies Program at University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he is now professor emeritus. In 1975, he founded the Deer Park Buddhist Center in Oregon, Wisconsin, site of the Dalai Lama's first Kalachakra initiation granted in the West. He is the author of several books in English, including the five-volume comprehensive teaching, Steps on the Path to Englightenment.

David Patt received his PhD in Buddhist Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and is the author of A Strange Liberation: Tibetan Lives in Chinese Hands. He recently served as executive director of the Dzogchen Foundation.

Tenzin Gyatso, the Fourteenth Dalai Lama, is the spiritual leader of the Tibetan people. He frequently describes himself as a simple Buddhist monk. Born in northeastern Tibet in 1935, he was as a toddler recognized as the incarnation of the Thirteenth Dalai Lama and brought to Tibet's capital, Lhasa. In 1950, Mao Zedong's Communist forces made their first incursions into eastern Tibet, shortly after which the young Dalai Lama assumed the political leadership of his country. He passed his scholastic examinations with honors at the Great Prayer Festival in Lhasa in 1959, the same year Chinese forces occupied the city, forcing His Holiness to escape to India. There he set up the Tibetan government-in-exile in Dharamsala, working to secure the welfare of the more than 100,000 Tibetan exiles and prevent the destruction of Tibetan culture. In his capacity as a spiritual and political leader, he has traveled to more than sixty-two countries on six continents and met with presidents, popes, and leading scientists to foster dialogue and create a better world. In recognition of his tireless work for the nonviolent liberation of Tibet, the Dalai Lama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989. In 2012, he relinquished political authority in his exile government and turned it over to democratically elected representatives.

His Holiness frequently states that his life is guided by three major commitments: the promotion of basic human values or secular ethics in the interest of human happiness, the fostering of interreligious harmony, and securing the welfare of the Tibetan people, focusing on the survival of their identity, culture, and religion. As a superior scholar trained in the classical texts of the Nalanda tradition of Indian Buddhism, he is able to distill the central tenets of Buddhist philosophy in clear and inspiring language, his gift for pedagogy imbued with his infectious joy. Connecting scientists with Buddhist scholars, he helps unite contemplative and modern modes of investigation, bringing ancient tools and insights to bear on the acute problems facing the contemporary world. His efforts to foster dialogue among leaders of the world's faiths envision a future where people of different beliefs can share the planet in harmony. About the Author
Janet Jiryu Abels is the founder and now co-resident teacher, with Gregory Hosho Abels, of Still Mind Zendo in New York City, and the guiding teacher of Plum Blossom Zendo in Pittsburgh. She received dharma transmission as a Zen teacher in the Soto White Plum lineage of Taizan Maezumi Roshi in 2000. She is a certified Bio-Spiritual Focusing teacher, and is a member of the White Plum Asanga as well as the Lay Zen Teachers Association.

I have not been able to put it down and I must say that it is one of the best Dharma books I have read thus far and I have an M.A. in Buddhist Studies and have read the great classics as well as the more recent user-friendly works by American and Tibetan teachers. No kidding... it even led me to the direct insight during Zazenkai that Zen is nothing special- it is our life just as it is (and not from my head and rather from 'knowing' in the moment- complete and unfettered) And, over the mountains, mountains!

I appreciated the Zen ancestors and myself so much more after reading about their humanity. Who knows how much is myth or story telling - it really doesn't matter. What did make a difference to me as a zen student was realizing that these great teachers could only be great because they were so human. That is what hit home and helped me to awaken to the fact that there is no 'Zen' or 'awakening' per se outside of how I live my own life. So you see their stories and struggle are mine and brought my practice and approach to Zen down to earth. Thank you again.

A Chan Retrospective from a Zen Perspective

In Making Zen Your Own, Sensei Janet Jiryu Abels gives the Chinese Chan masters new life as she expounds on their personalities, wisdom, and teachings. And she does so from a present-day Zen perspective.

Having practiced in the Chan and Zen traditions, I was happy to see again how both traditions complement each other.

Making Zen Your own is more than an historical treatment about the Chinese masters. Here, one can find dharma lessons that Sensei Janet smoothly blends into the telling without disrupting the narrative flow.

This work is eminently readable--thanks in no small part to her daughter and editor, Carrie Abels--but not in a pure-reading sense. The lessons Sensei Janet offers need to be read with meditative awareness and taken to heart.

Making Zen Your Own is well worth not just one, but many reads to capture the dedication and spirit of Sensei Janet.

Zen Masters coming alive

I have long not ben really interested in studying the old Zen Masters. After all, what do these old Masters have to do with me and my Zen practice today? It wasn't before reading Sensei Abel's book that I realized: everything! They were just like us. Struggling and searching. Getting such an intimate account of these old Masters makes them come alive today. And ultimately feel connected.

"H. H. Dudjom Rinpoche (1904-1987), the supreme head of the Nyingma Order, was unquestionably one of the most extraordinary Tibetan Buddhist masters of the twentieth century. Highly realized, he also was a greatly accomplished scholar, whose numerous writings contributed substantially to the preservation of the Nyingma heritage. This foundational work comprises two 'volumes'--the texts and the reference materials. Volume One includes two treatises, here called 'books,' with the first book (pp. 3-382) covering the fundamental teachings of the Nyingma Order and the second book (pp. 383-973) representing the most comprehensive history available for this oldest branch of Tibetan Buddhism. Volume Two, consisting of the reference materials, makes up the rest of this enormous compilation, which includes numerous photographs, line drawings, and maps--an outstanding achievement for the author, the translators, and the editorial team of Wisdom Publications. In his first treatise, Dudjom Rinpoche explains the key concepts of nirvana and samsara along with the source literature relating to them, the important notion of Buddha bodies, the three vehicles, Buddha Families, the two truths according to Madhyamaka and the source literature relating to the 'causal' vehicles, the Secret Mantra Vehicle (Vajrayana) and its various levels and most important source texts. The second treatise has a historical orientation but necessarily also includes matters of philosophical and practical interest. Dudjom Rinpoche begins his treatment with the original teachings of the Buddha and the patriarchs of the early Buddhist Sangha. He next focuses on the rise of Vajrayana and its lineages of Mahayoga, Anuyoga, and Atiyoga. He describes the development of the many-branched Nyingma Order in incredible detail, paying attention to all its lineages and providing valuable biographies of their many masters from Padmasambhava to Mipham. A whole section is dedicated to rectifying classic misconceptions about the Nyingma tradition, and another section provides a concise chronology extending from the Buddha's life (who is assumed to have been born in 962 B.C.) to 1987 A.D. Gyurme Dorje, the principal translator, has rendered a helpful yeoman's service, especially for lay readers, by furnishing this tome with a systematic introduction that expertly maps out the contents of the doctrinal discussions found in the first treatise." About the Author
Dudjom Rinpoche (1904-87) was appointed by His Holiness the Dalai Lama as the supreme head of the Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. He was an enlightened yogi and meditation master, a discoverer of concealed treasure teachings (a terton) who was inseparable from Guru Rinpoche [Padmasambhava], the most prolific of contemporary Tibetan scholars, and an incarnate lama who had intentionally emanated for the sake of sentient beings for seventeen successive lives.

Gyurme Dorje holds a PhD in Tibetan Literature and an MA in Sanskrit with Oriental Studies. From 1991 to 1996 he held research fellowships at London University, where he worked on the Encyclopaedic Tibetan-English Dictionary. He has written, edited, translated and contributed to numerous books on Tibetan culture.

Matthew Kapstein is Numata Professor of Buddhist Studies at the University of Chicago. His previous publications include the Tibetan Assimilation of Buddhism: Conversion, Contestation, and Memory and, with the anthropologist Melvyn C. Goldstein, Buddhism in Contemporary Tibet: Religious Revival and Cultural Identity. He is co-translator of the late H.H. Dujom Rinpoche's The Nyingma School of Tibetan Buddhism. Since 2002 he has also served as director of Tibetan Studies at the ecole Pratique des Hautes etudes, Paris.

Nectar from a Master

One could not categorise Nyingma School as an ordinary book. It is a translation of teachings and the pure mind retrospective knowledge of the amazing activities of past masters from the eminent Dudjom Rinpoche, one of the greatest Tibetan Buddhist masters of this century and a living Buddha. His incarnation has reappeared. An ordinary person could spend 20+ years digesting this discourse. This particular book, which is a cheaper and more economical printing of a two-book box set, is a chance for anyone to access this superlative material much more easily. Recently, a bookseller in Kathmandu wanted to charge me $USD 500 for the original box set. Years ago, you could buy it for about $200. The price has shot through the sky! So, if you want a collector's item, buy the original box set but if you simply want the wisdom and inspiration, this book will rip your mind apart.

An Outstanding Feat

The two volumes are both extremely useful for anyone seriously interested in Buddhist philosophy in general and Tibetan Buddhism in particular. Dudjom Rinpoche gives a thorough, encyclopedic overview of all Buddhist schools, seen from the Nyingma (i.e. The Great Perfection, or Dzogchen) perspective, and an account of the history of the Nyingma lineage is given. The reference volume contains amongst other items a brilliant bibliography. Dudjom Rinpoche's work is not easy reading, but demonstrates the complexity of Buddhist thinking and practice. Gyurme Dorje's translation is annotated and is in itself a remarkable feat in buddhology and tibetology.
