What have been the major changes in the intellectual landscape of the left since the mid seventies? Have they on balance represented an emancipation or a retreat for socialist culture as a whole? In the Tracks of Historical Materialism looks at some of the paradoxes in the evolution of Marxist thought in this period. It starts by considering the remarkable and variegated growth of historical materialism in the Anglo-American world, spreading across a broad field from history to economics, politics to literature, sociology to philosophy. By contrast, the same years have seen a drastic recession of Marxist influences in the Latin cultures where it was traditionally strong—France or Italy. Its main theoretical challengers there proved to be successive forms of structuralism and post-structuralism. The common coordinates of these—tracing the outer bounds of the work of Levi-Strauss or Lacan, Foucault or Derrida—are surveyed and criticized, in the light of the inherent limitations of the language model from which they derived. In Germany, on the other hand, the theoretical scene has been largely dominated by the accumulating work of Habermas, with its roots in the Frankfurt School. Yet Habermas’s philosophy also reveals unexpected affinities with the trend of prevalent Parisian concerns, in its unifying emphasis on communication—while at the same time diverging from them in the constancy of its political commitments. The historical background of international class struggles against which these variant fates of Marxism in the west were played out is then explored, with special attention to the interconnection between the destinies of Maoism and Eurocommunism. What, finally, is the nature of the relationship between Marxism as a theory and socialism as a goal? A conclusion reviews the wider issues posed for the labour movement by the rise of the peace movement and the women’s movement, and suggests a range of priorities for the further development of Marxist thought in the eighties.

Too simple

The followup lecture to Anderson’s rather reductive text, Considerations on Western Marxism, continues the Marxist reduction of the history of twentieth century critical theory. While I admire Anderson and regard his historical and political texts as invaluable intellectual resources, his compressed judgments of structuralism, post-structuralism and much of the Frankfurt School traditions in these lectures are indefensible in their simplicity. Although I mostly agree with the general shape of his story (critical theory throughout the neoliberal period has lost its criticality), I cannot follow him in his specific assessments of figures like Althusser, Foucault, Derrida, and the like. All too often his particular judgments are bewilderingly unfocused and dogmatic. Writing off Levi-Strauss, Anderson insists “no economy, in other words, can be primarily defined in terms of exchange at all: production and property are always prior.” Without explanation, the whole of the structuralist interpretation of kinship is thus dismantled. Foucault gets the same treatment: “The Birth of Tragedy, apotheosis of Wagner and theorization of music as the parent of language, is also the source-work of the theme of an original Dionysiac frenzy, as the Other of all Apollonian order, that has always underlain Foucault’s work.” A Dionysiac frenzy underlies Foucault’s work? It’s difficult for me to see the evidence for this. Foucault, always an elusive thinker, was no positer of the irrational as a value in-itself. Moving from Foucault to Derrida, the picture only gets worse, for Derrida pursues a “purer post-structuralism,” whatever this purity is supposed to mean. All too often, Anderson circles around the problems he refuses to unpack. As a result, this text is an arrogant, knowing, and altogether unfair representation of rich intellectual traditions which must be interrogated rigorously in order to advance the ultimately general position the Marxist school wants to see triumph.

About the Author
Lama Thubten Yeshe (1935-1984) was born in Tibet and educated at the great Sera Monastic University. He fled the Chinese oppression in 1959 and in the late 1960s, with his chief disciple, Lama Thubten Zopa Rinpoche, began teaching Buddhism to Westerners at their Kopan Monastery, Kathmandu, Nepal. In 1975 they founded the international Buddhist organization, the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition (FPMT), which now has more than 160 centers, projects and services worldwide.

Nicholas Ribush is the founding director since 1996 of the Lama Yeshe Wisdom Archive, dedicated to preserving the teachings of Lama Yeshe and Lama Zopa Rinpoche. He graduated from Melbourne University Medical School in 1964 and first encountered Buddhism at Kopan Monastery in 1972. He was an ordained monk from 1974 to 1986. He helped establish Wisdom Publications with Lama Yeshe in 1976, established Tushita Mahayana Meditation Centre in New Delhi in 1977, and Kurukulla Center in Boston in 1989. Ribush was a member of the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition (FPMT) board of directors from 1983 until 2002. He lives in Lincoln, Massachusetts.

Lama Thubten Zopa Rinpoche is the Spiritual Director of the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition (FPMT), a worldwide network of Buddhist centers, monasteries, and affiliated projects, including Wisdom Publications. Rinpoche was born in 1946 in the village of Thami in the Solo Khumbu region of Nepal near Mount Everest. His books include Transforming Problems into Happiness, How to Be Happy, and Ultimate Healing. He lives in Aptos, California.

Caution - Prerequisites

I wanted to let folks know that I have not read this book (yet). The preface provides a clear and specific warning that the material is only for those that have completed Highest Yoga Tantra Initiation and I was able to confirm this with the nun at my local FPMT center. In typcial Buddhist fashion she didn't really provide a "rule" but did offer "it would be best if you waited..." sort of advice. As such I now have a ribbon around this book that says "read me when highest yoga tantra completed". I think this would be a good book for the generally curious and Lama Yeshe's writings that I have read are just amazing, but if you are making a purchase as part of your journey on the path it may be useful to you to be aware of the request Lama Yeshe makes in the preface.

Not idle reading

This book is an advanced work for experienced Buddhist practitioners in the Tibetan tradition. I doubt that other readers would get much out of it. It is like a cookbook, you have to do what it says if you want to satisfy yourself. And if you want to cook, you need the utensils. In this case you need to be studying with a lama, have received initiation and have some experience practicing in order to work with this book.

The teacher of the text is in the Gelug tradition. I am a Kagyu, so that colors what I say. The author is very formal and rigorous. He makes much of what I perceive as minor matters (don't move your meditation cushion, keep it in the same place throughout your retreat). So I filter out some of what he says as not essential.

I was practicing Vajrasattva when I bought this book and I wanted something to keep the practice fresh. This provided it.

If you are practicing Vajrasattva, this book will be very helpful. There are also some things in this book that could be helpful to other practitioners.

NO EMPOWERMENT REQUIRED!

This along with with a few of the other of the Vajrayana sadhanas like the Medicine Buddha sadhana do NOT require empowerment to be able to use. I have verified this with several monks and ngakpas.

With that being said, receiving the empowerment will drastically improve the benefits associated with this particular sadhana.

If you are interested in taking a proactive role in your spiritual and mundane well being I highly suggest the practice of Vajrasattva to burn up and eliminate negative karma that causes us to suffer spiritually and materially.

All of use have done wrong things in this life and in the past incarnations, this is a wonderful and powerful practice to be able to handle our negative karmic debt in a responsible way.

Vajrasattva is like catholic confession on steroids! I recommend everyone Buddhist or not (I am not) to practice karmic purification as a way to help avoid unnecessary suffering in our lives.

About the Author
Thuken Losang Chokyi Nyima (1737-1802) was among the most cosmopolitan and prolific Tibetan Buddhist masters of the late eighteenth century. Hailing from the "melting pot" region of Amdo, he was Mongol by heritage, and educated in Gelukpa monasteries. Throughout his life, he traveled widely in east and inner Asia, spending significant time in Central Tibet, Amdo, inner Mongolia, and at the Qing court in Beijing. He served as abbot of several important monasteries, and wrote hundreds of texts on Buddhist thought and practice, the most enduring and influential of which is the Crystal Mirror of Philosophical Systems.

Born in the Tsang region of Tibet in 1923, Geshe Lhundub Sopa is both a spiritual master and a respected academic. He rose from a humble background to complete his geshe studies at Sera Je Monastic University in Lhasa with highest honors and was privileged to serve as a debate opponent for the Dalai Lama's own geshe examination in 1959. He moved to New Jersey in the United States in 1963 and in 1967 began teaching in the Buddhist Studies Program at University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he is now professor emeritus. In 1975, he founded the Deer Park Buddhist Center in Oregon, Wisconsin, site of the Dalai Lama's first Kalachakra initiation granted in the West. He is the author of several books in English, including the five-volume comprehensive teaching, Steps on the Path to Englightenment.

Roger R. Jackson is the John W. Nason Professor of Asian Studies and Religion at Carleton College in Minnesota, where he teaches the religions of South Asia and Tibet. He has published many articles on the philosophy, ritual, meditative practices, and poetry of Indian and Tibetan Buddhism, and has written or co-edited several books, including Is Enlightenment Possible?, Tibetan Literature, Buddhist Theology, Tantric Treasures, and Mahamudra and the Bka' brgyud Tradition. He is a past editor of the Journal of the International Association of Buddhist Studies, and is currently co-editor of the Indian International Journal of Buddhist Studies.

A Treasure

This is another wonderful addition to this translation project. I have two other volumes in this series: Mind Training & The Book of Kadam (see links below). None of these books is the kind I can read right through. Mind Training is a compilation of teachings on Exchanging Self and Other. This is lifetime practice, so the book is not something to read, but an anthology of practices.

The Crystal Mirror is an 18th Century encyclopedic guide to Tibetan and other Asian philosophies. It has a lot of information I'm not interested in as well as a great deal I want to know. It is well produced. It has an excellent index. I have used it to look into areas where I have questions - Mahamudra, for instance. It is clear and concise. I found out why Amulet Mahamudra has that name. Its two parts fit together like the front and back of an amulet box (gau). I have had instruction that did not include this explanation. I also found out that Mahamudra includes a range of things and is not just one teaching.

This is a book I already treasure and I am sure its value to me will grow over the years.

Excellent book

The library of tibetan classics has put together a commendable collection of texts. The cristal mirror of philosophical systems offers a thorough view of buddhism in Asia with particualr emphasis in the tibetans shcools of buddhism. It is a must for any serious student of buddhism in general and tibetan buddhism in particualar. I find it particularly useful for a person deciding which school of buddhism to join. It has ample notes, a rich glossary and a fair analytical index. It is most auspicious that the Hersey family foundation is supporting this effort and making the tibetan classics available to a wider audience.

I believe the author thought he was being unbiased

but somehow he concludes that:
- The Jonangpas are crypto-Hindus (Samkhya), not really Buddhist
- The Kagyus are in decline
- The Sakyas have been great, but are in decline
- The Nyingmas have had great practitioners in the past, but their methods may not be so suitable for today's lesser people...

In other words, only the Gelugpas have the fully unerring system for the Dharma in Tibet. Guess what? He's a Gelugpa.

Of course, this is a snapshot as of about 1800; but still, I think his descriptions are highly flavored by his opinion as to the best school for presenting the Dharma.

I got this book mostly for a Tibetan view of how the Dharma spread in the rest of Asia. It's interesting to get that view.

It's an interesting book, I'm sure it's written with great sincerity, and I don't regret buying it. But don't expect a fair comparison of the different schools of Tibetan Buddhism. If you want to understand the different traditions, read further and visit centers from the different lineages.

I love Steadman's artwork but this story did not live up to its title, in my opinion. However, a five-year old might love it ...

no room, plenty of whimsy...

Ralph Steadman. You may not know the name, but believe me, you'd recognize the art style at a glance. His furious, spastic pen-and-ink drawings laced with blown inks and blots of thick black-- as if someone snuck up behind him and yelled BOO! and his pen nib got frightened and let loose-- have been featured in perhaps every magazine and graced the covers of more than just his own books (the old cover for "Fear and Loathing" by Hunter S. Thompson comes to mind...). What's fascinating is the amount of books he has written himself.
With such a jumbled style of illustration, you might find it odd that he's written a childrens' book. Published in Australia in 1989 and currently out of print in the States, it exists in "No Room to Swing a Cat."
Our tale opens when our hero, Tom, announces that his room is too small (hardly surprising considering it's stuffed to the gills with blocks, cars, checkerboards, stuffed animals-- including a moose and dinosaur-- and Tom himself). His mother asks what he means, and Tom says that it's not even big enough to swing a cat in. NOTE: Tom doesn't WANT to swing a cat in it, he's merely pointing out that you CANNOT swing a cat in it-- a distinction that should probably be made to children who get this book read to them.
Thereafter ensues some Steadmanian fun-- mainly two page spreads of Tom swinging various animals to his mother's enquiry of how big his room SHOULD be. "Big enough to swing a pig?" his mother asks, and there on the page is a teeny Tom swinging a large, stunned looking pig by the tail. Tom goes through a number of different animals, each getting larger and more ridiculous looking as they're being swung, until it's revealed that he want's his room big enough for HIM to swing in. At which point he and his mother go outside to Tom's swingset.
If you've seen Steadman's artwork, you'll know it's quite chaotic and sometimes almost sinister-looking. Big blobs of ink are splattered pell-mell across the canvas; if the ink were red, you might think he had been brained right there at his easel. Tom himself is depicted with a big frown-- a simple upside-down semicircle line across his face that gives him a somewhat haunted look. For the last decade or so, the trend in children's books have been towards self-esteem and conflict resolution and away from chaotic illustrations of cockeyed kids whizzing stunned dogs around over their heads. The British phrase use as the title and genesis of the book may be enough for many people to pass up the chance to search for this one, but I personally don't see much harm in it.
Firstly, most of the animals Tom flails about are already taking up space in his room at the very beginning of the book, and it seems reasonable to me that any room that you can't successfully swing a stuffed moose in IS too small.
Secondly, for older children it can help to explain the complex world of adult phrases and simile ("guerrilla warfare" was the one that always stumped me when I was a child; I had visions of half-man, half-ape creatures fighting it out with American soldiers).
Finally, in a world where children have ready access to handguns and Pokemon has our preschoolers running amok pretending to shock, zap or burn each other to cinders, the amusing (if queerly drawn) pictures of one child swinging a stuffed elephant around to show how small his room is pales by comparison.

Came in great condition with no tears or flaws, and had a clear protective jacket too. I wouldn't even call it an issue but it was an old library book, with the old punch stamp still in it, kind of cool actually. 10/10 Thanks!

About the Author
Geshe Tashi Tsering was born in Tibet in 1958 and received his Geshe Lharampa degree (similar to a doctorate in divinity) from Sera Monastery in India in 1987. Since 1994, he has been the guiding teacher of the Jamyang Buddhist Centre in London, while also teaching at other Buddhist centers worldwide.

Gordon McDougall was director of Cham Tse Ling, the FPMT's Hong Kong center, for two years in the 1980s and worked for Jamyang Buddhist Centre in London from 2000 to 2007. He helped develop the Foundation of Buddhist Thought study program and administered it for seven years. Since 2008 he has been editing Lama Zopa Rinpoche's lamrim teachings for Lama Yeshe Wisdom Archive's FPMT Lineage series.

Lama Thubten Zopa Rinpoche is the Spiritual Director of the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition (FPMT), a worldwide network of Buddhist centers, monasteries, and affiliated projects, including Wisdom Publications. Rinpoche was born in 1946 in the village of Thami in the Solo Khumbu region of Nepal near Mount Everest. His books include Transforming Problems into Happiness, How to Be Happy, and Ultimate Healing. He lives in Aptos, California.

seeking a balance point

I found Geshe Tashi Tsering's discussion of emptiness to be very informative, in seeking to strike a balance between the Scylla of nihilism and the Charybdis of eternalism. Despite the clarity of his viewpoint, and the excellence of this short exposition, one recognizes the subtleties involved. In the end, as he writes, this is more significant than a merely philosophical exercise. Personally, I was impressed with his focus on the importance of the conventional mind. As one confronted with the noise and confusion of life, and far from enlightenment, it is still apparent to me that this short book offers some deep insight. The magnitude of the teaching skill of the author shines through in the pages of this book.

Tough subject to get your mind around

One of the toughest aspects of the Buddhist teachings. I haven't finished the book but I am enjoying it thoroughly. The 'emptiness' they teach is a mentality and a habit that you could spend your entire life learning and practicing. Have three of the other books in this series and have enjoyed them all.

A very clear and concise text. This is a "must have read". A French version would be most welcome. The concepts expounded there are absolutely essential to fully understand the Buddha's teachings. After reading this book, one feel "nearly" enlightened ;O)

About the Author
Sayadaw U. Pandita is the abbot of Panditarama Monastery and Meditation Center in Rangoon, Burma, where he lives. He is a treasured teacher to many students around the world.

Kate Wheeler is the author of Not Where I Started From and When Mountains Walked. She has received a Guggenheim award, an NEA, a Whiting Award, and two O. Henry Awards. She lives near Boston and teaches meditation retreats around the country and in Mexico.

Aggacitta Bhikkhu is a Malaysian Theravada monk ordained in Rangoon, Burma, in 1979 and trained by Sayadaw U Pandita, Sayadaw U Tissara, Sayadaw U Acinna among others. He studied advanced Pali and translation in Thai and Burmese under Sayadaw U Dhammananda in Thailand, from 1983 to 1984. In 2000, he founded Sasanarakkha Buddhist Sanctuary near Taiping, Perak, Malaysia.

Joseph Goldstein has been leading insight and loving-kindness meditation retreats worldwide since 1974. He is a cofounder of the Insight Meditation Society (IMS) in Massachusetts, where he continues as one of the resident guiding teachers. In 1989, together with several other teachers and students, he established the Barre Center for Buddhist Studies and, later, The Forest Refuge. A seminal figure in the emergence of Buddhism in the West, Joseph is the author of numerous books including One Dharma. He lives in Barre, Massachusetts.

Aung San Suu Kyi guide to meditation

This book has been on my shelves almost since it was published. This is indeed, as others have noted, a most perfect introduction to Buddhism, as a deed and an awakening discipline, not just a system of thoughts.

I read the burmese Nobel Prize Aung San Suu Kyi made it (a gift from her husband) her guide to further her meditation practice when she had only herself, being in forced reclusion and deprived of any teacher's help, to rely upon. And grandly profited from it. So that should be recommendation enough.

I'd like to recommend another fine book worth gracing your shelves, about understanding Buddhism: BUDDHAHOOD by P.D. Mehta (available on Amazon.com, albeit not on Kindle)

It will improve your life: it changed mine

With only a basic understanding of meditation, I read this book in 1995 and converted to Buddhism 3 months later. The wisdom in the words is easy to grasp, as centuries of teachings have been translated in a smooth and joyful way. There is no fear-mongering in this text....U Pandita just thinks that you will be happier if you calm down a bit. To do that, you need to sit. It's pretty simple, really....I hope you will be open-minded and give it a try.
