David Roediger is Kendrick Babcock Chair of History at the University of Illinois. Among his books are Our Own Time: A History of American Labor and the Working Day (with Philip S. Foner), How Race Survived US History: From Settlement and Slavery to the Obama Phenomenon, and The Wages of Whiteness: Race and the Making of the American Working Class. About the Author
Peter Alan Roberts was born in Wales and lives in Hollywood, California. He earned a BA in Sanskrit and Pali and a DPhil in Tibetan Studies from Oxford University (Harris-Manchester College). For more than thirty years he has been working as an interpreter for lamas and as a translator of Tibetan texts. He specializes in the literature of the Kagyu and Nyingma traditions with a focus on tantric practices, and he is the author of The Biographies of Rechungpa.

A Major Contribution to Western Students of Dharma

This is an excellent translation and presentation of eleven classic Tibetan Buddhist Kagyu texts selected by Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche, who in the past two or three decades has emerged as a leading teacher of Mahamudra, serving as the head abbot of several major monasteries and the primary tutor to the 17th Gyalwang Karmapa.

This collection includes translations of (1) general lectures by Gampopa (1079-1153) intended to assist his students with transmitting the Dharma, (2) a rare quality edition of one of the most sublime Mahamudra texts of the 12th Century Lama Shang, (3) two popular and essential Mahamudra texts of the 3rd Karmapa Rangjung Dorje (1284-1339), (4) a much needed re-visited translation of Drukpa Pema Karpo's Mahamudra instructions (this text was originally included in the Evans-Wentz classic work), 5) the Drikungpa Jikten Sumgon's nephew and successor, Sherap Jungne's (1187-1241) "One Thought" or "Single View-Point" and 6) and important works by Tsele Natsok Rangdrol, the Eighth Situ and Shonu Lha. Thus essential instructions of the Tsalpa, Drukpa, Karma, Drikung lineages are presented with easily readable and consistent translations, allowing the serious student to appreciate and explore their distinctions. In addition, the Sixth Sharmapa Chokyi Wangchuk's guide to the "Six Dharmas of Naropa" and Dakpo Tashi Namgya's classic overview of tantric Mahamudra are included.

Mahamudra is regarded to be a most suitable Dharma or approach for Westerners by "the heads" of the various Kagyu lineages represented in this collection. Therefore, Peter Alan Roberts has done all English-speaking Buddhists a major service by rendering this work with the utmost care. This work firms-up Peter's credentials as one of today's leading translators in the Kagyu tradition.

As a director of a Kagyu meditation center for Westerner students of Mahamudra for the past 21 years, who has had the opportunity to work with both beginners and more seasoned students, I would like to highly recommended this important work. How wonderful it is to be able to read the advice of some of the "most accomplished fellow practitioners" dating back almost 1000 years! You will get a lot out of this work for a long time to come.

This book has been carefully assembled as to include the most basic and the more advanced Mahamudra instructions.
The translator of this great volume has the understanding that is necessary to convey the deep meaning buried within it's pages.

you can not go wrong with this series

The entire series is fantastic...I do not think one could go wrong with any of the titles, as they are classics of tibetan buddhist thought. Mahamudra is the primary core of the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism, so instructions such as these are truly a gift.

Adventure Series a must have for kids

My Mother read my siblings and I these books when we were kids. We just loved them and would hate when she would have to put it down for the night. I will for sure read them to my kids when I have them. Thank you Amazon for carrying these wonderful books by this wonderful Author.

2 smashing stories

The first book was least better than the second one but it was still really good. the adventures were really smashing!!! these books by enid blyton are suitable for 7 to 11 and some of the famous five series ages 8 to 12 (some of the adventures are quite violent).

The first 2 were quite funny. like at one time kiki (parrot) scared a few men at night in a castle, because they were looking for 2 peole (read it and you'll know who).

Some of it was boring but you just have to read it to get drawn into this book. Some of it was a bit too unreal.

all in all i thought this was another excellent book and anyone and i mean ANYONE should enjoy them!!! enjoy! :-)

Very Fond Memories

When I attended a private school for English speaking kids in Italy, Enid Blyton's "Adventure" novels were the most popular books in the school library. This was in 1964. Most of the eight novels were always checked out, and I was never able to read all of them by the time my parents took me back to the States. The ones I did read I enjoyed tremendously! Until I got a computer, I never knew you could buy them in the U.S. Most U.S. libraries don't have Blyton's books. But now, at the age of 52, I can now finish the series. Only I can't remember which novels I've read! Guess I have to read them all. Thanks Amazon!

When the first Africans arrived in Virginia in 1619, there were no “white” people there; nor, according to colonial records, would there be for another sixty years. Historical debate about the origin of racial slavery has focused on the status of the Negro in seventeenth-century Virginia and Maryland. However, as Theodore W. Allen argues in this magisterial work, what needs to be studied is the transformation of English, Scottish, Irish and other European colonists from their various statuses as servants, tenants, planters or merchants into a single new all-inclusive status: that of whites. This is the key to the paradox of American history, of a democracy resting on race assumptions.

Volume One of this two-volume work attempts to escape the “white blind spot” which has distorted consecutive studies of the issue. It does so by looking in the mirror of Irish history for a definition of racial oppression and for an explanation of that phenomenon in terms of social control, free from the absurdities of classification by skin color. Compelling analogies are presented between the history of Anglo-Irish and British rule in Ireland and American White Supremacist oppression of Indians and African-Americans. But the relativity of race is shown in the sea change it entailed, whereby emigrating Irish haters of racial oppression were transformed into White Americans who defended it. The reasons for the differing outcomes of Catholic Emancipation and Negro Emancipation are considered and occasion is made to demonstrate Allen’s distinction between racial and national oppression.

About the Author
Theodore W. Allen (1919–2005) was an anti–white supremacist, working-class intellectual and activist who began his pioneering work on “white skin privilege” and “white race” privilege in 1965. He co-authored the influential White Blindspot (1967), authored “Can White Workers Radicals Be Radicalized?” (1969), and wrote the ground-breaking Class Struggle and the Origin of Racial Slavery: The Invention of the White Race (1975) before publication of his seminal two-volume classic The Invention of the White Race (1994, 1997).

This is the work of a true People's Scholar. If you ever want to learn about the unspoken, unmentionable power structure of the US and its role in creating the concept of Whiteness and therefore Blackness, you must read this book. Every page is a delight!

Excellent historiography and history of american racism

Allen begins volume 1 by reviewing the many histories of American racism written in the 20th century. Dividing the arguments into the psycho-cultural school and the socio-economic school of thought, he teases out the strengths and flaws of their scholarship. Allen then posits racial oppression as a deliberate ruling-class decision (constantly undergoing renewal) to prevent property-less European Americans from allying themselves with enslaved and free African Americans by offering the European Americans privileges based on white skin. His solution is to study "racism" rather than "race" because studies of race always devolve onto discussions of the body--onto those who are perceived to possess race--and thus avoids the real issue. That issue is the institutionalization of racism, how it functions systemically. He argues that race(ism) should be treated like any other oppression such as those oppressions practiced on people of a certain class or gender. It is a strong, well researched, tightly argued work. He proves that the "white race" can be "gotten on a technicality" because it was and is indeed an invented rather than a natural category.

About the Author
Egyptian novelist, doctor and militant writer on Arab women's problems and their struggle for liberation, Nawal el Saadawi was born in the village of Kafr Tahla. Refusing to accept the limitations imposed by both religious and colonial oppression on most women of rural origin, she qualified as a doctor in 1955 and rose to become Egypt's Director of Public Health. Since she began to write over 30 years ago, her books have concentrated on women. In 1972, her first work of non fiction, Women and Sex, evoked the antagonism of highly placed political and theological authorities, and the Ministry of Health was pressurised into dismissing her. Under similar pressures she lost her post as Chief Editor of a health journal and as Assistant General Secretary in the Medical Association in Egypt. From 1973 to 1976 she worked on researching women and neurosis in the Ain Shams University's Faculty of Medicine; and from 1979 to 1980 she was the United Nations Advisor for the Women's Programme in Africa (ECA) and Middle East (ECWA). Later in 1980, as a culmination of the long war she had fought for Egyptian women's social and intellectual freedom, an activity that had closed all avenues of official jobs to her, she was imprisoned under the Sadat regime. She has since founded the Arab Women's Solidarity Association and devoted her time to being a writer, journalist and worldwide speaker on women's issues. With the publication by Zed Books in 1980 of The Hidden Face of Eve: Women in the Arab World, English language readers were first introduced to the work of this major writer. Zed Books has also published four of her previous novels, Woman at Point Zero (1983), God Dies by the Nile (1985), The Circling Song (1989) and Searching (1991) as well as a collection of her non-fiction writings The Nawal El Saadawi Reader (1997). She has received three literary awards.

It's also about the larger issue of the haves exploiting the have-nots

The story takes place in the early 1970s. The author, Dr. Saadawi is a psychiatrist and consultant for the women's prison. A young woman named Firdaus is scheduled to be executed for fatally stabbing her pimp. Thus far Firdaus has refused to speak to anyone, but Dr. Saadawi breaks through and thus a novel is born.

Firdaus is born to a poor family. Her parents die and she goes to live with her perverted uncle. He gets married and wants to be rid of Firdaus so he sends her to boarding school. She finishes her secondary school exams placing 7th in all of Egypt.

Her uncle and his wife decide that sending her to university would be a waste of time as there aren't that many job opportunities available. So, they marry her off to a sheik, who's supposed to be a real catch. He's plenty old enough to be her grandfather, and prone to tirades and violence that cause his repulsive facial sores to ooze pusty goo. Prior to this "arranged" marriage Firdaus contemplates escaping, but realizing how limited her options are acquiesces. Eventually, the marriage becomes unbearable and she flees only to be "rescued" by a pimp. She goes through a series of pimps, and one madam, before having a major epiphany.

Firdaus realizes she has been selling herself short. Drastically raising her prostitution rate makes her a hot commodity. Being a product of American pop culture myself this came as no great surprise to me. After all, some of my compatriots have been known to spend as much as $50,000 for a handbag. This concept of setting the price too high in order to raise the product's perceived worth in the eyes of the consumer is known in the advertising industry as "prestige pricing."

Firdaus sets herself up as a freelance pro. She has a nice apartment and picks and chooses her clients, and has free-time to pursue intellectual interests. Before long she has another major revelation after a male friend, whom she believes respects her as an astute liberated woman, lets her know that she's "just a whore." She then decides to get an "honest" 9 to 5 job working for the government. In doing so she must drastically reduce her standard of living. She is in for a rude awakening as she discovers the subculture of office politics. Not only did she make far more money as a prostitute she got more respect. Putting out is one of the unwritten rules of the job description.

Coincidentally, two nights before I read this book I saw a TV show about one of Nevada's legal brothels. The pimp, or CEO, boasted that their top "girl" grossed half a million dollars last year. That's more than 10 times what the average teacher makes (if not for the union they would make even less) and five times that of a nurse practitioner (HMOs don't mind paying this because it's still far cheaper than hiring MDs). Firdaus' story takes place about 35 years ago and I know there have been a lot of positive changes since then, but I wonder how many of them are cosmetic.

Two days after reading Firdaus' story I came across an article about the human organ "business." (Buying and selling organs is illegal in the US, but entrepreneurs circumvent this bete noire by charging "service" and "handling" fees. Organ procurers can strip a body much like a car, fetching $250,000 through legal channels!) In China harvesting death row inmates to sell their organs is reported to be a booming business. Regardless of how one feels about the death penalty, once profit is factored into the equation look out! So, if Firdaus were executed today in China her body could continue to be a commodity post-mortem.

This novella bears uncanny similarities to Lao She's "Crescent Moon." It's a short story in an anthology by the same name. A widowed mother is forced to prostitute to support her daughter then the daughter ends up prostituting to support the mother. Neither of them is named but, the daughters observations are very similar to Firdaus', so similar I began to wonder if Saadawi has read "Crescent Moon." Lao She was a casualty of the Cultural Revolution in 1966.

The motif of the stalking and judgemental green eyes can also be found in Li Ang's 1969 short story, "Curvaceous Dolls" that appears in The Colombia Anthology of Modern Chinese Literature edited by Joseph S.M. Lau and Howard Goldblatt. Li Ang also wrote The Butcher's Wife. "Curvaceous Dolls" is about a young wife's saphic longings, not unlike Firdaus' feelings for Miss Iqbal.

Another Eye-Opener Book

When I was in highschool back home in Indonesia, our teacher chose this book (was translated into Indonesian) as one of our mendatory reading books for the year. I though it was boring at first but just after the first pharagraph of the book I changed my mind. Surely the book was truly worth to read.

I do not want to go through the details and the analysis to the book, but I must say, reading Woman At Point Zero was heart-throbbing and was exciting at once. I sure recommend anyone to read this book, to also feel the excitement and, as for informational, to see the lives of Egyptian muslims.

The book is written in a well-structured manner and is very easy to understand. Facts are provided and it is a book written out of first-hand experienced writer. Again, well-written that is. Another eye opener the world we're living now, one that my or may not surprise some, but is still is interesting to read.

A very pleasing read

This novel is a very fast read. I'm an average paced reader but got through this novella (about 105 pages) in about two hours which is hellishly fast.
The main story is framed between two smaller sections. Part one is only about 8 pages and the writing style within it is poor as is part three but this is purposefully done because it is from the point of view of a psychologist.
The meat of the story is heart-wrenching and ends in bittersweet triumphance. It's a gripping tale of a woman's search for freedom from the restrictions of her Egyptian/Arabic society. My only complaint is that the writing style isn't as great as I would have liked it to be but I have suspicion that this is the fault of the translator. It is certainly a page-turner that must be read in its entirity before a comment can be made. It gets better with each page. The storyline is excellent and it is very well constructed.
It questions male dominance in Arabic society while taking you on a saddening ride with Firdaus, the prostitue. We see the effects of the dominant men in her life including her uncle and father and how this leads to her desiring to be a prostitute. Perplexingly enough we see that she prefers the street-life.
Describing a woman looking for control and security, finally grasping it by commiting the ultimate sin which she finds to be no crime at all, Saadawi captures a disturbing picture of Egyptian society.
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in a good, quick, passionate read. One cannot help to sympathize with Firdaus and that's what makes this story so very sentimental.
Read it in its entirity, try to in one sitting if possible, it will truly make your day and leave a lasting impression in your mind, in your heart, and in your soul.

This book is directed at adult or artistically talented, mature audiences. Even though children will enjoy browsing through these full-page, full-color photographs to choose the look they want, it is doubtful that they will be able to accomplish even the simplest of these effects alone. On the other hand, it is an excellent source of ideas for school carnivals and fairs. The text (which does not cite an author) stresses that young children can usually sit still for a maximum of five minutes and that many are nervous about face-painting and need reassurance along the way. It offers advice about crowd control and setting up workshops to teach others the skills. Proper cautions are provided. A word of wisdom when attempting these attractive designs--plan on more than five minutes per face--especially if you need to allow a base color to dry before applying the second coat. Fast face painting for kids of all ages

No matter what your kids want to dress up as, this 45 page book will help you get them in disguise in a jiffy. Large color photos are wonderful guide and faces included are: clown,pierrot,masquerade,snow queen, indian brave, flower girl, pirate, lion, tiger, scary faces for halloween, animals and more! Very good book with instructions about the basics with plenty of designs to choose to try for years to come.

Ok if you only have five minutes

This book is for the mom who is looking for something to get her through a birthday party and not for those seriously looking to get into face painting as a serious hobby or business. The faces are basic and offer little for the imagination. If it were much less expensive it would get better reviews, but at the same cost you can get much better face painting books from the market. Check it out at the library instead.

Not enough ideas for me

I wanted a good face painting book to use with my three-year-old, but this book wasn't much help. It has a good tiger and clown. Other faces in the book were either too simple to need directions (i.e. paint a flag on the cheek) or too abstract or scary for my little guy.
