The Wilderness Journeys (Canongate), by John Muir

"When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the universe."  —John Muir, My First Summer in the Sierra The name of John Muir has come to stand for the protection of wild land and wilderness in both America and Britain. Born in Dunbar in 1838, Muir is famed as the father of American conservation. This collection, including the rarely-seen Stickeen, presents the finest of Muir's writings, and imparts a rounded portrait of a man whose generosity, passion, discipline, and vision are an inspiration to this day. Combining acute observation with a sense of inner discovery, Muir's writings of his travels though some of the greatest landscapes on Earth, including the Carolinas, Florida, Alaska, and those lands which were to become the great National Parks of Yosemite and the Sierra Valley, raise an awareness of nature to a spiritual dimension. These journals provide a unique marriage of natural history with lyrical prose and often amusing anecdotes, retaining a freshness, intensity, and brutal honesty which will amaze the modern reader. Introduced by Graham White.

This is a great anthology
By Jesse A Whyte
If I was only to buy one John Muir book (a tragedy), this would be the one. Excellent essays that demonstrate both his lucid writing style and the amazing country that he describes. He coherently describes his own life (and the times that surround it), in a way that makes me want to grab a cotton rucksack and a bag of food and head off for the High Sierra.

John Muir's story...

The stories of John Muir's life are autobiographical and presented in very elementary english. His life is certainly interesting...reading about it in this book is challenging.

The Hidden Lamp: Stories from Twenty-Five Centuries of Awakened WomenFrom Wisdom Publications

The Hidden Lamp is a collection of one hundred koans and stories of Buddhist women from the time of the Buddha to the present day. This revolutionary book brings together many teaching stories that were hidden for centuries, unknown until this volume. These stories are extraordinary expressions of freedom and fearlessness, relevant for men and women of any time or place. In these pages we meet nuns, laywomen practicing with their families, famous teachers honored by emperors, and old women selling tea on the side of the road.

Each story is accompanied by a reflection by a contemporary woman teacher--personal responses that help bring the old stories alive for readers today--and concluded by a final meditation for the reader, a question from the editors meant to spark further rumination and inquiry. These are the voices of the women ancestors of every contemporary Buddhist.

"An amazing collection. This book gives the wonderful feel of the sincerity, the great range, and the nobility of the spiritual work that women are doing and have been doing, unacknowledged, for a very long time. An essential and delightful book." (John Tarrant, author of Bring Me The Rhinoceros And Other Zen Koans That Will Save Your Life)

Not only for women, this collection presents the rich feminine perspective for all sincere dharma practitioners." Zen stories about women Zen masters with commentaries by contemporary women teachers
By flowingfountain
The Hidden Lamp is instructive, fascinating, and - dare I say it in the traditionally serious Zen world - fun!

The most compelling reason to read this book, in my opinion, is not only that the koans are about women, but also that the commentaries are written by contemporary women from different Buddhist traditions.

The commentaries are from women who have dedicated their lives to the Buddha way. As women, they have embodied understanding of the spirit and intentions of these teaching stories. In this way, these ancient koans have become alive and inspiring and personal.

The Hidden Lamp is a collection of Zen and Chan stories in which women are the sages and masters. When one reads the classical Zen literature, one wonders where the women are. Are they too busy cooking dinner, or is the society so repressive that there are no women who seek to realize the truth of the Buddha Way?

Koans, as most everyone knows, are traditional Zen stories that are intended to provoke investigation and contemplation, resulting in insight into one's spiritual practice and life. But koans are also famously abstruse. Note case number 47 in the Book of Equanimity:

"Attention! A monk asked Joshu, 'What is the meaning of Bodhidharma's coming from the West?' Joshu answered, 'The cypress tree in the garden.'"

Many students, like me, think, "Hmmm. I don't get it." So koans are often considered to be impenetrable puzzles, written by men, that require a commentary....by another man. In another famous koan collection, The Blue Cliff Record, the commentaries are written by tenth and eleventh century men, and these commentaries are equally abstruse!

Consider, however, one of the many examples in The Hidden Lamp that speaks directly to our lives. In one story, Joko Beck is asked if she is enlightened. She laughs and says, "I hope I should never have such a thought!" Peg Syverson, who writes the commentary, found that her practice was transformed when she heard these words. She - like many of us - wish for enlightenment, or some better version of ourselves. In Peg's case she wanted to be an ideal mother, but this caused anxiety, which got in the way of her relationship with her son. So she speaks of letting go of some perfect ideal, and practicing as he/she is, in the middle of her life.

The koans in The Hidden Lamp are straightforward and refreshingly understandable, and as mentioned, the commentaries are relevant and inspiring.

The Hidden Lamp sheds new light on Buddhist Women
By Jane Morris
In "The Hidden Lamp", Zenshin Florence Caplow and Reigetsu Susan Moon have compiled 100 most moving stories. Before recently, women in Buddhism have been too often thrown on the back burner, although they can be incredible "sages and masters"... as I have found Otagaki Rengetsu to be in Rengetsu: Life and Poetry of Lotus Moon.

Stories in this compilation relate to themes like "Being Human" and "Words in the Midst of Wordlessness." One of the most outstanding stories related to a Zen saying that "not knowing is the deepest intimacy," which is a truth that can be hard to come to terms with. Each story is followed by an enlightening personal response and a final meditation. In no way is the reader expected to be passive in this experience!

The editors of this book have been practicing the art of Zen for more than 60 years combined and in those years edited countless journals and books. This is arguably the most important work they have focused on and I recommend it for an Buddhist woman looking for that special women-wisdom.

A Gem Worth Polishing
By Daniel M. Kaplan
The Hidden Lamp is a fresh breeze through stale forrests. It's an incredibly wonderful collection of , of what? Essays? Dharma talks? Hints? Pointers? It's a great collection of mostly contemporary zen teachers and writers on zen who happen to be female. This is not a point to be lost in the shuffle. As a 'disclaimer', I need to say that I know and have worked personally with at least 2 of the writers in this collection, so it was their contributions that I read first. Unique voices that I have always found personally helpful in my own exploration of the Dharma and my own life. I didn't stop there.
This is not just an important collection because it is a collection of and by women in the Dharma. It's important because of the value of their perspectives. Reading these stories, allowing them to enter one's life as if hearing them in the Dharma Hall, the power of koans and Dharma take on a life of their own, intermingling with each of our lives, enriching them, broadening them, awakening that which does not change and bringing it to the foreground. It is by far THE best collection of zen stories I've seen compiled in some time.
Many of the stories comment on stories I've never heard before. It's fresh.
Perhaps one of the most important contributions America and the West has made to buddhism in general is the recognition that women are not just nameless tea ladies of the past, but vibrant, awakened, specific women of our time, of all time. I am grateful to Zenshin Caplow for taking on this project and for producing such a beautiful collection and I highly recommend it for your study.

Zen Questions: Zazen, Dogen, and the Spirit of Creative Inquiry, by Taigen Dan Leighton

Whether speaking of student or master, Zen hinges on the question. Zen practice does not necessarily focus on the answers, but on finding a space in which we may sustain uncertainty and remain present and upright in the middle of investigations. Zen Questions begins by exploring "The World of Zazen,"--the foundational practice of the Zen school--presenting it as an attitude of sustained inquiry that offers us an entryway into true repose and joy. From there, Leighton draws deeply on his own experience as a Zen scholar and teacher to invite us into the creativity of Zen awareness and practice. He explores the poetic mind of Dogen with the poetry of Rumi, Mary Oliver, Gary Snyder, and even "the American Dharma Bard" Bob Dylan. What's more, Leighton uncovers surprising resonances between the writings of America's Founding Fathers--including Thomas Jefferson and Ben Franklin--and the liberating ideals at the heart of Zen.

Possibly the best book of contemporary Zen thought and practice among Western-born teachers. It is my new first recommendation for a basic text on Zen - for beginners and advanced practitioners. It really speaks to being a modern practitioner in the world, without idealizations, or Asian exoticism. It's practical and poetic, grounded while giving access to the "lofty" insights of ancestors like Dogen and Hongzhi (for both of whom Leighton has provided some of the best translations in English.)

The real thing
By Dale Mac
Having this book is like having an old friend drop by for a visit. And this old friend knows his stuff -- from scholarly inquiry, dedicated Zen practice and engaged living.
So settle down, open any page and enjoy the Dharma as expressed in this genuinely American way. It's fun, it's vital. You will want to keep it around for a long time.

Zen is about Creative Inquiry, indeed.
By Daniel M. Kaplan
Taigen Dan Leighton's latest book is, in many ways, unlike most of his other books. It's personal; it's his writing, not his translations. And in doing so, he illustrates some seminal aspects of Zen, both Soto and otherwise. A little self disclosure first: I'm an old friend of Taigen's, and have been practicing in a Koan School of zen for 15 years now, after spending 10 years also studying and practicing, along side of Taigen, in Suzuki Roshi's lineage.
One of the things that is a theme in this book that comes through over and over again is the need and place of questioning in zen. Not for answers, but as the central practice. Answers and insights do come, as Taigen says, but the sustaining of the questioning is vital. Whether on the cushion or off the cushion, raising a question is central to the heart and practice of zen inquiry. Taigen underscores this throughout his fine book. Creative Inquiry. " Settling in to the dynamic quality of zazen as question and inquiry requires a willingness to be present for this question." (Pg 8). Can we live in the middle of this life that is a question? His explication of Dogen as `how do I live this life?' cuts through the often difficult time in getting to exactly what Dogen is talking about in terms of practice and life.
This book is based on Taigen's articles and Dharma Talks given from 1994 through 2010.
Taigen's use of the term Upright Sitting, or being upright throughout this practice, is taken from his own Lineage Teacher, Tenshin Reb Anderson. It is another central notion that Taigen comes back to over and over again. What does it mean to be Upright, in the midst of it all?
Although Taigen relies on some of his favorite contemporary expressions of Zen in our culture, from Bob Dylan (whom Taigen refers to as his `favorite American Dharma Bard'), to Mary Oliver, to Rumi, to the more political expressions of his vision, his explication of Dogen and Soto Zen is clear, penetrating and filled with his own practice and life experience and this book is filled with his soft touch, his gentle touch. His delving into Dylan's Visions of Johanna as being an expression of what it's like to do a sesshin, a weeklong intensive meditation experience which is a central practice in zen, is just one of many examples of how this practice has touched Taigen's ongoing life of practice right here ,right now.
In his section on Gary Snyder, Taigen again finds resonance with this ancient practice: "Snyder clarifies that spiritual training or cultivation is not a matter of fighting or overcoming nature and the wild." (pg 213).
In one of his more penetrating sections, for me as a practitioner and reader, Taigen states, "...freedom is not escape. We cannot escape from our situation....We have to acknowledge our karma and our Dharma position, which is to say that we have to accept who and where we are, and what we are doing." (pg227/228). I would add that it is through this very life we already have, warts and all, that freedom is found, through form, to vastness.
This book speaks to both 'just sitting' practice as well as the spirit of koan study.
This is a fascinating book that I recommend to you for your consideration. As Creative Inquiry is central to both koan practice and `just sitting' practice as practiced in Soto Zen, the arbitrary distinctions between the two `schools' of zen starts to disappear as we find the true expression of Buddha's Way in our lives, through form, to fully not knowing.

Published by Amnesty International, IANSA, and Oxfam International, for the Control Arms campaign.

Countless women and girls have been shot and killed or injured in every region of the world. Millions more live in fear of armed violence against women. Two key factors lie at the heart of these abuses: the proliferation and misuse of small arms and deep-rooted discrimination against women.

Armed violence against women is not inevitable. In many countries women have become powerful forces for peace and human rights in their communities. Their actions show how real change can be effected and women’s lives made safer.

This report provides an overview of where two major international campaigns intersect: Control Arms and Stop Violence Against Women. It examines the impact on women of guns in the home, in communities, and during and after conflict. In each of these contexts, it looks at violence committed with guns against women, the role women play in gun use, and the campaigns women are spearheading against gun violence.

Going beyond lobbying for better laws and better implementation of existing laws, it considers how campaigners need to work to change attitudes, arguing that looking at how the myths about men, women, and guns are constructed can reveal new ways to break cycles of violence.

It is estimated that some 54 million people in the U.S. act as informal caregivers for ill or disabled loved ones. We can add to these countless workers in the fields of health and human service, and yet there is still not enough help to go around: as many as three fourths of our informal caregivers report "going it alone." It's no wonder that "caregiver burnout" and depression afflict so many.

Sure to be welcomed by caregivers of all types, the groundbreaking new Medicine and Compassion can help anyone reconnect with the true spirit of their caregiving task. In a clear and very modern voice, Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche and Dr. David R. Shlim use the teachings of Tibetan Buddhist philosophy to present practical tools for revitalizing the caring spirit. Readers, in turn, will find their patience, kindness, and effectiveness re-energized.

Offering practical advice on dealing with people who are angry at their medical conditions or their care providers, people who are dying, or the families of those who are critically ill, Medicine and Compassion will strike resonant cords with medical professionals, hospice workers, teachers and parents of children with special needs, and those caring for aging and infirm loved ones.

From The New England Journal of Medicine
Especially since the 14th Dalai Lama received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989, the Tibetan tradition has gained center stage in the West. This book is a simple and well-written introduction to the Tibetan variant of Buddhism, a global religion that has garnered increasing interest in the United States since Zen textbooks became available in the 1950s. In folksy English, the book explains the basics of the belief system, including the concepts of impermanence, attachment, suffering, and "emptiness suffused with compassion." Emphasizing that the Buddhist idea of "empty mind" and compassion are essentially innate and indistinguishable, the book offers simple meditation practices and visualizations (mostly having to do with concentrating on breathing) as a direct way to cultivate "nonconceptual compassion." Even though the book does not specifically target health care providers (meditation and compassion seem to be good for everyone), there are plenty of insights that will be worthwhile for caregivers. We are told that even if we are saddened because we cannot cure everyone, we can find some joy if we make our effort to help 100 percent. We are told that treatment includes gestures and nonverbal communication of reassurance, caring, calmness, and help in removing fear. We are asked to remember that we are all "waiting in line to die." Medicine and Compassion is most interesting when it touches on Tibet's unique cultural traditions. For example, it provides a dramatic glimpse into another conceptual world in its descriptions of the process of dying, during which, according to Tibetan beliefs, the spirit moves through various bardo realms, where mind-consciousness is reincarnated. Originally developed as a radical rejection of Hinduism 2500 years ago, Buddhism has always had an intense and rigorous dialogue with other religions on such issues as non-self, non-theism, and immanence. Unfortunately, this dialogue has not often taken place in the West, where Buddhism often finds itself in the environs of New Age spiritual consumerism. Although the book's introduction claims that "this is not New Age stuff," the book merges into New Age unrestrained "dispensations" as it emphasizes Buddhism as a religion of unlimited abundance that accesses the unrestricted Buddha within. This Westernized Buddhism has little to do with demand, limitation, obligation, and responsibility. Reaching enlightenment -- the arduous effort of making no effort -- is watered down to being unafraid to take a "vacation" from our hectic lives with 15 minutes of daily meditation while working toward "relaxation" (a word rarely found in any Buddhist canon). Buddhism becomes indistinguishable from what, in 1902, William James called the emerging American "Gospel of Relaxation." The weakness of this book is most evident in its discussion of Tibetan medicine itself. In fact, recognizable Tibetan medicine is not 2500 years old, as the book claims. Rather, Tibetan medicine is an amalgam of Ayurvedic, Chinese, and Hippocratic thought, synthesized with indigenous shamanism in a series of conferences inaugurated during the consolidation of the Tibetan Empire between 634 and 755 A.D. This broad-minded acceptance of diverse traditions is a rare historical example of active medical pluralism. Scholars accept that translations of some Hippocratic texts are embedded in canonical Tibetan medical books. In reading Medicine and Compassion, one easily recognizes ideas from Hippocrates's On Decorum, which states that the physician should "bear in mind his manner of sitting, [maintain] . . . decisive utterance, brevity of speech, composure, diligence, care, replies to objections, calm self-control, concentration, readiness to do what has to be done. . . . Perform all this calmly." In a curious way, the journey to the East in this book brings the reader back to Western medicine's point of departure. Medicine and Compassion is a delightful book, but for accounts that are more intellectually challenging, I would recommend Edward Conze's classic Buddhism (1951); for Tibetan Buddhism, Chogyam Trungpa's Cutting through Spiritual Materialism (1974); and for Buddhist health care perspectives, Lawrence Sullivan's Healing and Restoring (1989). Review
"A simple and well-written introduction to the Tibetan variant of Buddhism. In folksy English, the book explains the basics of the belief system, including the concepts of impermanence, attachment, suffering, and emptiness. ...There are plenty of insights that will be worthwhile for caregivers. Medicine and Compassion is most interesting when it touches on Tibet's unique cultural traditions. For example, it provides a dramatic glimpse into another conceptual world in its descriptions of the process of dying, during which, according to Tibetan beliefs, the spirit moves through various bardo realms, where mind-consciousness is reincarnated. [...] A delightful book." (Ted Kaptchuk, in the New England Journal of Medicine)

"I was dumbfounded by how much Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche comprehends the emotional challenges facing doctors in relationship to their patients. He nails it time and time again. Magnificent! I shall continue to reread it just for the pleasure of the teachings, for the clarity of his mind, and the purity of his heart. This is a very worthy project." (Jon Kabat-Zinn, M.D., author of Full Catastrophe Living and Wherever You Go, There You Are)

"Medicine and Compassion is a wonderful guide for caregivers to develop compassion and skill in helping others from their deepest heart. A very practical, easy to read, and much needed book." (Judith Orloff, M.D., author of Positive Energy)

"Among recent Buddhist publications, Medicine and Compassion is unique in being directed at medical professionals. In it, Chokyi Nyima pairs homespun advice for providing the best possible care for patients with expositions on Buddhist understandings on suffering and embodiment. In the introduction, David Shlim, MD, discusses a common problem among doctors and health care workers, namely that they often erect an emotional barrier between themselves and their patients. Chokyi Nyima offers an alternative approach, one that applies the Buddhist training in compassion to establish bonds of trust in the doctor-patient relationship. Interesting adaptations of Buddhist principles are offered [on such subjects as] the art of healing and how to assist patients through the dying process. The book concludes with chapters that introduce the Tibetan Buddhist understanding of the death process and a brief overview of Tibetan medicine." (Buddhadharma)

"It would be a mistake to think that only an adherent of Buddhism could gain from reading, reflecting, and acting on this book's ideas. Medicine and Compassion provides practical guidance to anyone who seeks to become more compassionate." (from the foreword)

"This book will be of value to any health worker who has a sincere wish to help his or her patients and who wants to nuture that wish without burning out. It will also be of value to any health worker who once had this wish and would like to recover a deep sense of caring and compassion. There is also much of value here for those who care for the terminally ill. [The book should also be read by] anyone involved in the teaching of health workers, especially those who provide clinical care." (Journal of Travel Medicine)

"Like most doctors, I sometimes lack compassion. Once, as an intern, exhausted beyond caring, I discharged a favorite patient from the hospital despite his obvious downward spiral. My so-called excuse? I needed to lower my inpatient census! Today, almost 30 years later, I am still pained when I remember the baleful looks that he and his wife cast my way when he was readmitted the following morning. They knew that I had abandoned him, and so did I. That I can clearly recall such a moment is telling. Medicine and Compassion: A Tibetan Lama's Advice for Caregivers is full of wisdom for any doctor whose well of medical empathy has at some time run dry. It represents the collaboration of a Tibetan Buddhist monk from Nepal and a Western-trained doctor, David Shlim, who first crossed paths when Shlim was director of the largest Western medical clinic in the Kathmandu Valley in Nepal. Shlim now lives in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and has recently led several courses with his longtime friend and teacher. In writing this book, the two have tapped a genuine need in contemporary American medicine. The first section of the book touches on universal truths, as well as classic Buddhist teachings. However, a central theme of this section that is beyond debating is the profound influence of emotions and mental attitude on the experience of aging, sickness, and death. The second section of the book examines our potential for and various means of achieving a greater level of compassion. In the third section, come simple but profound thoughts on how to render the best possible care to all patients-including the aged, irritable, aggressive, or uncooperative- as well as how to nurture lifelong attitudes that ease the process of dying. The book ends with an overview of the 2500-year-old tradition of Tibetan medicine, in some ways a surprisingly modern "science" in its broad application to physical illness, bad energy or evil influence, and emotional disorders. Medicine and Compassion is easy to recommend, because it squarely confronts one of medicine's perennial challenges- namely, how to grow in wisdom and kindness, as well as in knowledge, and how to care for patients with all of the above. In my view, these matters are not given sufficient attention in many modern clinical purviews. In this data-driven, technologic era of doctoring, the spiritual focus is easily lost. Medicine and Compassion is a good reminder of the lessons that ancient teachings and contemporary religion can offer to our collective 21st century profession and to our individual humanity as healers." (Clinical Infectious Diseases)

Timeless Wisdom
By Charles R. Atkins
Medicine & Compassion is an important book. It should be required reading for physicians, medical students, nurses, caregivers, and hospice staff. Every family should have it on their bookshelf. Christians, Muslims, Jews, Hindus, Buddhists, and even non-religious people will benefit from this book because the ideas are about the human condition which transcends all differences of faith. In a word, this book is a treasure.

We all grow old, get sick, and die. Impermanence, uncertainty, and sorrow permeate our very existence. Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche and David R. Shlim, M.D., answer the important questions of why we get sick and to how to respond with compassion and mercy, when illness or impending death are at hand. One could say that it is a manual to understanding our own nature and mortality.

The narrative tone of the book is intelligent and merciful - never sugary or overdone. I could really feel the subtle, yet vibrant life energy of the book as it conjured forgotten images and feelings. It caused me to reflect on the end of life care that I administered for my parents and brother. I was able to see what was good and what was lacking in my care for them, without feeling a sense of regret. In fact, I gained a sense of optimism for the future.

As a writer on Buddhist healing, I found this to be a perfectly cut gem. Its words and inferences reflected the light of wisdom. I found it an invaluable tool for encouraging the sick and suffering. I was especially impressed with the author's end of life guidance in the chapter "Easing the Process of Dying." As a Buddhist for more than 30 years, I've read many works on death, dying, and the bardos. Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche and Dr. Shlim explain this subject in a way that can satisfy the average person or the spiritually advanced. Most of all, the reader will be inspired to improve their own life and mind.

I highly recommend this book. Just as an outdoorsman needs a compass, so too can this book guide one in challenging times.

Providing "medicine" that can't be purchased.
By Stephen Bezruchka
I've been practicing medicine for over 30 years and been a patient as well. What is it that you want in a 'healer.' Compassion. But it doesn't come in a pill bottle, nor at the end of an endoscope, nor between the scalpel and the skin. Compassion is the critical part of caring that helps people get better. For those of you who take care of patients, this book provides a perspective you won't find in print anywhere else. Would that this book was required reading in medical school, residency, and at all continuing medical education courses! Then the US might become a little healthier than the sorry state it is in now.

A remarkable book
By Nancy Piper Jenks
Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche and David Shlim have articulated beautifully an invaluable lesson in learning how to encompass compassion into our encounters with patients. As nurses and physicians we work with great dedication and energy to help our patients move toward a healthier state of being. The process sometimes seems very easy and gratifying however, sometimes we are stuck and not sure why. This book offers practical advice to the reader of how to more effectively approach each patient with kindness, wisdom and care. Since reading the book, I have noticed subtle changes in my own approach to patients and have felt a new energy and insight.

A classic of "poor mouth" literature !
By Micheal O Mealoid
This is the story...of a lovely lady! This book was the bane of every school child in Ireland for decades. It used to be on the curriculum so that, despite the fact that you would have to grit your teeth to read it, it was a bestseller in Ireland. It tells the story of Peig Sayers, a woman who lived in the poor and rural south-west of Ireland in the early 20th century. In this book, everyone was poor, no-one had anything, people were evicted from their hovels, life was hard, people died young, children were barefoot, the livestock slept in the house, it was always raining....well, you get the idea.
Peig was born on the mainland of Ireland, but married a fisherman who lived on the Blasket islands, a small collection of islands a few miles off the coast of Kerry. Tough as things were on the mainland, things were tougher still here! You were lashed by the Atlantic, the wind could blow you off the cliffs, and you could be drowned while you were fishing, and that was on a good day! The book tells of her struggle to be accepted by the islanders, how she brought up her large family, how she coped with the death of some of her sons fishing, and the folklore, stories, and culture all around her.
This book, and others like it from other authors on other islands ("The Islander" being another good example) formed a literary style which became known as "the poor mouth". They all share similar characteristics as they described the oppresive hardships suffered stoically by the people. Even now in Ireland, anyone whinging about their bad situation would be dismissed as "putting on the poor mouth" and everyone would know what was meant. There is even a spoof "poor mouth" book by Flann O'Brien, which is well worth reading as an antidote to all the hardship and depression!
Now that Peig is no longer force fed down poor school children's throats, it has been re-appraised as a valuable historical record of western Irish culture, and no longer as an instrument of torture. Now that you don't HAVE to read it, more people now seem to WANT to read it! The book was originally written in the Irish language since that was the only language Peig spoke, but a translation in English is available.
If you want a glimpse of an Ireland now long gone (and it really is long gone, despite what anyone might tell you), you can't go wrong with Peig. Just make sure you have a good supply of prozac close to hand.

Review
"I like 12 Steps on Buddha's Path very much. 'Laura K' has done a great service through writing this book--there is a huge potential audience out there that needs and deserves it. Weaving together the teachings and practices offered to us by the Buddha with the teachings and practices of the 12-Step Program is a brilliant move, that she has rendered with utmost integrity and wisdom." (Marcia Rose, founding teacher of The Mountain Hermitage and Taos Mountain Sangha)

"The author of this book has used her own experience in decades of 12-Step work and as a Buddhist meditator as the vehicle for presenting both practice paths. As I read these parallel reflections, echoing the promise of the end of suffering back and forth between them, the promise of liberation from suffering sounded stronger and stronger, as if two familiar voices were calling out 'Yes!' and 'Amen!' to each other. I finished the book inspired. It renewed my zeal. I think it will do the same for you." (Sylvia Boorstein, author of It's Easier Than You Think)

"This book is an excellent introduction to 12-Step and Buddhist principles, and an insightful synthesis of the two traditions. Anyone seeking to understand recovery from a Buddhist perspective will find it to be a trustworthy and illuminating guide." (Kevin Griffin, author of One Breath at a Time: Buddhism and the Twelve Steps)

"A heartfelt and moving description of one person's spiritual journey through the mutually supportive practices of the 12-Step Program and the teachings of the Buddha, with very clear descriptions of each tradition." (Arinna Weisman, coauthor, The Beginner's Guide to Insight Meditation)
