Amazon.com Review
Buddhism isn't just for baby boomers anymore. As the spiritual marketplace continues to broaden in North America, Buddhism is emerging as a popular religious alternative among the young. Sumi Loundon, a practicing Buddhist and graduate student at Harvard Divinity School, has gathered a group of Generation X-ers and even younger Generation Y-ers around a virtual campfire to swap stories about what it means to be Buddhist. These are more than just your average tales of pious conversion or blissful living. Loundon's cadres find the relevance of Buddhism atop a sheer cliff face; in the throbbing heart of New York City; strung out on crack; in relationships good and bad; in tragic accidents; and in social activism. Some are monks, others punks; some meditate, others chant; some teach the dharma, others just live it. In this group, Buddhism is neither exotic nor a panacea. For many, it is a feeling of coming home and a proven method of coping while remaining open to the vicissitudes of life. Anyone who has felt the pull of Buddhism--the compelling arguments of its philosophy or the quiet expansiveness of it practices--will quickly identify with the personal experiences in this collection. Like Douglas Coupland's Generation X, Blue Jean Buddha could well become a book that defines and binds a group growing in self-awareness. --Brian Bruya

From Library Journal
A "twentysomething" American who grew up in the Zen Buddhist tradition, Loundon queried hundreds of her contemporaries in order to confirm that a generation of young Buddhists did in fact exist, to identify the challenges they face, and to define what it means to be a Buddhist in America today. She then asked 28 respondents mostly college-educated, self-identifying Buddhists in their twenties to write about how Buddhism has affected their self-transformations, life stories, and means of livelihood. This resulting collection of mostly brief, well-written, and interesting essays ranges from the poignant and inspiring (e.g., Jessica Morey's "Ordinary Awakening" and Seth Castleman's "If a Nice Jewish Boy Sits in a Cave, Does He Make a Difference?") to the sophomoric. Recommended as a secondary purchase for popular collections; more academic overviews of contemporary Buddhism in America can be found in The Faces of Buddhism in America (Univ. of California, 1998), edited by Charles Prebish and Kenneth Tanaka, and James Coleman's The New Buddhism (LJ 1/01). From Booklist
Buddhists in twenty-first-century America face many conundrums, and many books about the struggle to fit the dharma into daily life (or daily life into the dharma) are available, but most are by Buddhists in their forties or older. What about the challenges facing practitioners in their twenties? Editor Loundon, a young Buddhist born into a Zen community, wanted to know how her peers were coping, and her quest for men and women from diverse backgrounds willing to share their experiences yielded nearly 30 frank and thoughtful essays. Loundon's smart, committed, and articulate contributors include activists, health-care workers, students, teachers, monks, and a nun, and they cover the essentials in their tales of striving to reconcile Buddhist practice with the demands of school, work, family, and relationships. As contributors muse on the rewards and challenges of meditation, the great gap between theoretical and active Buddhism, and bending tradition to accommodate contemporary mores regarding sex, drugs, depression, recreation, and material security, they illuminate an evolving spirituality that is enriching American life. Young American Buddhists
By G. McKenna
I'm a young American (20-something) and I am so happy that someone is finally paying attention to my generation of practicing Buddhists! This book is interesting whether you're a young person just discovering Buddhism, or an older person interested in the new spirtiual motivations in youth culture today. The only weakness I can mention about this book is that it does not cover a wide range of Buddhist traditions. I wish, for example, it had included interviews with young Buddhists in the Soka Gakkai tradition which is one of the most youthful schools of Buddhism I know of in the United States these days. In any case, I am just glad someone finally published a book like this one. I also highly recommend a little gift book written by a 20-something American Buddhist named Taro Gold called "Open Your Mind, Open Your Life: A Little Book of Eastern Wisdom." I hope more and more young Buddhist voices will be found in print in the near future.

A most honest sprititual book
By Roy Gordon
This book is the rarest of spiritual books: one of honesty, and problematic outcome. Even the self-absorbed essays, being almost ingenous in their expression, lend to the honesty of belief and expression.
You know, even the best of spiritual books have to me that breezy tone of "you too can have the perfect life in only five minutes a day..." And, if the author recounts some of their past troubles, somehow they seem to have been effortlessly overcome with no residual effects.
This book is different. It is a collection of essays by young Buddhists, primarily in their late 20's and early 30's.
Many of the essays are excellent. "The Perfect Buddhist Boyfriend" depicts the disintegration of a relationship in which both partners have adopted all the accountremonts of being with-it young Buddhists. Similarly, there's the rude awakening of a young American Buddhist at a Tibetan retreat who, after several days, realizes that the wonderful authentic soup he his being served may be authentic, but it's Ramen that he could purchase at any supermarket. And why were they all isolated here meditating hours on end amongst themselves instead of going out and helping people. (The essay's conclusion is less satisfactory to me.)
My favorite essays are by those who have grown up in Buddhistm. "Growing Up with the Dharma Bums" is a riot, as the author in 1970's Rochester has to explain to his friend's mom why he cannot eat meat, straightforwardly, but reluctantly, informimg her that his parents are Buddhists and believe that killing animals is wrong. And at school he and his best friend are quick to remonstrate when they spy other kids burning up ants under the magnifying glass!
I myself gave copies of this book to each of my teenage sons. I showed them the introduction which begings with the following quotes:
"I did a lot of drugs before I was I Buddhist"
"Well, I did a lot of drugs because I was a Buddhist"
"Was asking my girlfriend to get an abortion un-Buddhist?"
What self-respecting teen wouldn't be hooked on these, at least to open the book. One of mine actually read some of the essays. You've got to sow the seeds and hope that some may take, if not now later.
And why did I want them to read the much less exciting essays?
Because the honesty of the voice, the struggles, the insecurities, the humility, the uncertainty admidst the seeking and moments of joy and revelation constitute (for me)descriptions of those on a real spiritual path, which I would being doing well to emulate in my own life.

"Blue Jean Buddha" a rare, articulate work
By Daniel C. Fisher
Sumi Loundon and company's BLUE JEAN BUDDHA is a rarity in several regards. For one thing, Loundon and her writers manage to lucidly articulate many ideas and feelings about culture, pop culture, age, and Buddhism that have previously proven to be precarious ground for authors to tread (this is particularly true of Loundon's first-class analyses throughout the book). For another, it switches gears gracefully--for any book, not just a dharma book--between being a sociological study (pieces like Kenneth Lee's "Drugs and the Dharma" and Thich Nu Pho-Chau's "Life as a Vietnamese Nun" exemplify this); a unique and very broad dialogue on philosophy, cultural ideologies, psychology, service, and peace (Claudia Heiman's "Winning over Depression," Noah Levine's "A Dharma Punx Path," and Adrienne Stauffer's "Freeing Tibet, Freeing Myself"); and very often literary nonfiction (Seth Castleman's "If a Nice Jewish Boy Sits in a Cave, Does He Make a Difference?" and Lillian Guild's "The Perfect Buddhist Boyfriend"). And lastly, its pieces burst with a very special kind of honesty about spiritual pursuits and the many facets of American life that only the spirit of youth could offer (Hanuman Goleman's "I'm a Mutt"). BLUE JEAN BUDDHA is fresh, insightful, and right-on. All of the bull's-eyes it manages to hit combined with its heart and humor make it an engaging read for anyone and an essential volume for any Buddhist's library.

Trust in Mind: The Rebellion of Chinese Zen, by Mu Soeng, Jan Chozen Bays

"The Great Way is not difficult / for those who have no preferences. / When love and hate are both absent / everything becomes clear and undisguised. / Make the smallest distinction, however / and heaven and earth are set infinitely apart."

So begins "Trust in Mind," the beloved poem that has again and again welcomed generations to their practice of Zen Buddhism. Traditionally attributed to the third Chinese ancestor of Zen (Sengcan, d. 606), it is often considered the first historical "Zen" document and remains an anchor of Zen Buddhist practice to this day.

Here, scholar and commentator Mu Soeng explores the poem's importance and impact in three sections: The Dharma of Trust in Mind, The Tao of Trust in Mind, and The Chan of Trust in Mind. Finally, a brilliant line-by-line commentary brings the elements of this ancient work completely to life for the modern reader.

Trust in Mind is the first book of its kind, looking at this very important Zen text from historical and cultural contexts, as well as from the practitioner's point of view. It is sure to interest readers of Mu Soeng and his fellow Buddhist contemporaries, as well as those with an interest in meditation and Eastern religions--most especially Zen practitioners, academics, philosophers, and scholars of Mind.

Elegant and scholarly review and commentary
By David A. Rutz
This book is a treasure of feeling and experiencing the spirit of Sengcan and his Xinxinming. The author in a scholarly, yet feeling manner gives us the historic and philosophical background of this work and gives us insight into the connections of buddhism, taoism, and chan in this great poem. This is not a quick read, but can be savored slowly. I always felt happier and see glimpses of "The Great Way" when I read and experience the wisdom of Sengcan. The Xinxinming and this book are to be read again and again.

Trust in Mind, Faith/Mind sutra
By M. Ennis
The Faith/mind poem or sutra is a well loved and important piece written by Sengcan or Sosan Zenji, the 3rd Zen Patriarch. This poem is rich and accessible, and no matter how new or old to zen practice a student might be the sutra contains many levels of teachings.
What is wonderful about this book by Mu Soeng, is that he not only includes numerous translations of the poem by zen masters such as Suzuki and Sheng-yen, but he also delves into the history of zen at the time this poem was written. I tend to find history a dry subject, but Mu Soeng keeps it interesting and pertinent. This book is valuable not only for the sutra it contains, but also for the great insight into the evolution of zen practice.
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in deepening their practice or anyone interested in how what we know as Zen has come to us in the form that it has.

I will re-read this wonderful book many times over the years to come - ...
By Terence J. MURPHY
Trust In Mind by Mu Soeng is seminal work that goes to the very heart of the Buddha's teachings. Mu Soeng brings alive the very esoteric .verses in a way that makes them relevant to the 21st century mind. Prior to reading this fascinating work, I found much of Seng T'san's poem, Hsin Hsin Ming, deeply mystical and abstruse. The clarity with which Mu Soeng exposed the core meanings in this work is second to none. I will re-read this wonderful book many times over the years to come - should I be that fortunate to live so long.

Object-Choice (All you need is love . . .), on Mating Strategies & A Fragment of A freud Biography), by Klaus Theweleit

Whom do we choose when we fall in love? How do we make the love-object into what we want? These are questions which only became important at the end of the nineteenth century, as Freud began to formulate a new discipline which would be called psycholanalysis. Freud argues Klaus Theweleit, was the first theoretician of the new situation: boy versus girl in the world series of love.

Theweleit looks at a number of relationships: Alfred Hitchcock and Alma Reville; the triangle of Hannah Arendt, Martin Heidegger and Elfriede Heidegger; Jung and Sabina Spierlrein. But the key figure is Freud himself. Who would, who could Freud choose? As it happened, Freud proposed to Martha Bernays. The 1,500 letters of Freud’s courtship became something like the first psychoanalysis; without knowing it, Martha Bernays became an analytic-instance.

But Object-Choice is not only a study of the founder of psychoanalysis, it is also an illuminating lexicon of love in the twentieth century. Freud is accompanied here by Jimi Hendrix, the Kinks and the Velvet Underground. Like Theweleits’s Male Fantasies, this is a collage book, mixing auto-biography, theory and pop culture, and always haunted by history, above all the history of Nazism.

As an epilogue, Theweleit brings Freud back to the scene of his courtship, and the Beatles back to Hamburg, in an exploration of that city’s Wandsbek district, once home to an important Jewish community. His comments on the transformations and destruction that Wandsbek has endured form an elegiac tribute to German Jewry, and a powerful conclusion to this remarkable book.

Good, solid Theweleit.
By Robert Beveridge
Klaus Theweleit, Object-Choice: All You Need Is Love... (Verso, 1990)

Klaus Theweleit is one of those guys you probably should be reading if you have any interest in philosophy; very few people in the English-speaking world, however, have. This no doubt partially because only two translations of Theweleit have appeared in English, Male Fantasies (only volume I of which is available these days, for some silly reason; I've been trying to get hold of vol. II for a decade without success) and Object-Choice. No matter that the latter is a smaller piece of a draft of a much larger work, Theweleit's Freud bio, which is in turn part of a much large work. Will we ever see it? Who knows? But at least you can pick this up, which is roughly equivalent to being able to rent Matthew Barney's The Order without the rest of the Cremaster Cycle being available.

Whereas Male Fantasies is a monstrous, imposing doorstop of a book, Object-Choice is slight, coming in at 112 pages. It is also more of a personal project, or so it seems from reading this one; it could be the fog of memory (I read Male Fantasies a decade ago), but I remember that one being drier, fuller of facts and footnotes. No less readable, mind you, I love it. But Object-Choice almost seems like Theweleit sitting across the table from you at a party, tossing back handfuls of peanuts while poking at Freud's theories of object-choice, relating them all back to events taking place in Freud's life while he was coming up with them.

As a side note, the back copy makes great fanfare of the idea that all this started with Freud's fifteen hundred letters to his future wife Martha Bernays, in the course of which she became the first subject of Freudian psychoanalysis; the text itself, however, only mentions that in passing, spending more time focusing on Freud's relationship with Carl and Emma Jung.

In any case, you'll probably either latch onto Theweleit or hate him. But you can't do either until you read him. *** ½

Tantric Ethics: An Explanation of the Precepts for Buddhist Vajrayana Practice, by Je Tsongkhapa

Tantra, or Vajrayana, Buddhism is a set of esoteric practices that involve mantra recitation and complex visualizations. Tantra constitutes the fabric of a Tibetan Buddhist's daily practice, but no practice of tantra can be successful without adherence to the tantric precepts, the highest of three complementary sets of vows. Tsongkhapa is perhaps the greatest philosopher ever produced by Tibet's Buddhist culture, and this book is a translation of his explanation of the tantric precepts.

Excellent guide to understanding tantric ethics
By Sean M. Sullivan
Lama Tsongkhapa was a consummate master of Buddhism in all of its facets. This book provides an in-depth and clear understanding of the various levels of vows, especially when practicing tantra that is an indispensable book for any practitioner. Oftentimes, western students receive tantric empowerments without fully understanding the ramifications of receiving tantric vows. I recommend this book to anyone contemplating entering the Vajrayana path, or those who have already entered it.

Excellent clarity on a complex subject
By L. Alper
This book is illuminating in both its parts: the translation of the philosopher Tsongkhapa's text and the introduction provided by the translator. The text, with the introduction as a guide, lays out the systematic morality of tantric Buddhism and does so in a way that is comprehensive and accessible. I highly recommend this book to any person interested in Buddhist tantric practice.

A Very Useful and Important Book on Buddhist Practice
By Eric Van Horn
Let me start by saying that Ayya Khema is one of my very favorite Buddhist teachers. I highly recommend her autobiography "I Give You My Life". It is the story of one of the truly remarkable people of her time. If Ayya Khema had been born in a Buddhist country - instead of Germany - she probably would have qualified for sainthood.

Having said that, I would call this book "an important addition to your library on meditation", but not necessarily a must read. I actually feel terrible saying that because her teachings have been so important to me. I have been looking for that all elusive "one book on meditation" for many years now, and have yet to find it. This one doesn't quite qualify, either.

Having said that, what is presented here is a meditational system, one that feels like a combination of what Ayya Khema discovered on her own - no easy task, to be sure - and what she got from her teachers. For example, she gives two examples of "sweeping". One is a "concentration" practice (samadhi), and one is a "feelings" (vedana) practice. These are (I believe) Burmese practices. I know some people for whom they have been helpful, and some for whom they have not been so helpful.

Ayya Khema comes from the Theravadan ("southern") school of Buddhism. This puts her practice closer to that of the Buddha's time, in contrast to later developments like Zen and Tibetan Buddhism. However, even in the Theravadan tradition there was a great deal of evolution over time. The sweeping meditation is an example of this. This is not, as far as we know, a meditational technique taught by the Buddha (although the Buddha taught a "wisdom" practice called "the 32 body parts" which might be considered similar). I mention this only because I think it is useful to understand what is an original teaching of the Buddha and what came later.

This book was taken (as far as I know) from her talks, many of which - over 400 - are available on the Internet. As often happens with books taken from talks there is something lost in translation. It doesn't have the tight feel of her retreat talks. I think the book could have used a somewhat more rigorous level of editing and organization.

My best suggestion for someone interested in this book is to find another one if it is your first book on meditation, perhaps one by Joseph Goldstein or Jack Kornfield, along with Sharon Salzberg's book on metta (loving-kindness) meditation. Then come back to this one and see how it fits into your practice. If you have already read a few books on meditation, then I would say this is a five star next read.

One area where Ayya Khema excels, and this is a rare area, is in teaching the "meditative absorptions", the jhanas. For reasons that escape me somewhat, the jhanas are a real hot button with most Buddhist teachers. They not only are not taught, they are actively discouraged. But the Buddha taught them ad nausem, so he obviously thought they were very important. In fact, the Buddha first taught sila - morality - to his followers, and then he taught jhana. Only after that, typically, did he teach the wisdom practices like Vipassana. This is not the way meditation is generally taught in the West. To be sure, the meditative absorptions are not easy to enter, but they are not impossible either. You do Not, as some would have you believe, have to go off on retreat for 3, 6 or 12 months.

The jhanas are an astonishing and dramatic gateway into attributes of samadhi: tranquility, happiness, calm, and stillness. In the second jhana you can step slightly sideways into true metta (loving-kindness), where the meditator - as the Buddha said - "abides pervading one quarter with a mind imbued with loving-kindness, likewise the second, likewise the third, likewise the fourth; so above, below, around, and everywhere, and to all as to himself, he abides pervading the all-encompassing world with a mind imbued with loving-kindness, abundant, exalted, immeasurable, without hostility, and without ill will. When the deliverance of mind by loving-kindness is developed in this way, no limiting action remains there, none persists there." It is quite a profound experience to be in a mind state where it is impossible to dislike anyone, even people who have completely opposing political views, where you can only feel love and compassion.

The jhanas also provide a taste of super-mundane equanimity (in the fourth jhana) and non-self (anatta). And of course the main purpose of jhana is to develop a mind that is razor-sharp, and can be used in the wisdom practices, giving insight into the three marks of existence: impermanence (anicca), unsatisfactoriness/suffering (dukkha), and non-self.

There are other books on jhana, but I think the way Ayya Khma (and her American student Leigh Brasington) teach jhana is more accessible to most people.

In addition to this book I highly recommend listening to some of her retreat talks, which are available on Dharmaseed.org. Her 1994 retreat at Santa Cruz is very good. They may take a while to get through - and absorb (I always listen to her talks at least twice) - but are well worth it. This is a unique, highly qualified and accomplished teacher who, from my standpoint, is one of the very best.

Understanding Emotional Reaction
By Carolyn
This is one of the first books on Buddhism I have read that really helped me to understand how much of our thinking is dependent upon our feelings, and how to deal with the emotions and the level of being that is based on emotional reaction. It became clearer to me through reading this book how many of our reactions and judgements have an emotional base. When I realized the author of this book was a woman, somehow the level of thorough attention given to this challenging aspect of ones practice, made perfect sense. Most works in Buddhist philosophy/ thought have been written by men. Her focus and language spoke directly to me in a way I have not found in other books. She expanded my knowledge and awareness of my own self-observation in the meditation process. She also offers much description on meditation techniques.

DUPLICATION ALERT!
By murfeeman
The book is excellent, but it is a word for word duplication of another Ayya Khema book published under the title "Know where You're Going" also published by Wisdom books. I am very disappointed by this lack of integrity by Wisdom Publications.

Luminous Mind: The Way of the Buddha, by Kyabje Kalu Rinpoche

Luminous Mind is a remarkable compilation of the oral and written teachings of the late Kalu Rinpoche - who was called "a beacon of inspiration" by the Dalai Lama. A master of meditation and leader of the Shangpu Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism, Kalu Rinpoche taught with an inviting, playful and lucid style that was just one natural manifestation of his own profound realization. The teachings presented in Luminous Mind are immediate and timeless.

As the Dalai Lama notes in his foreword, Luminous Mind covers "the full range of Buddhist practice from the basic analysis of the nature of the mind up to its ultimate refinement in the teachings of Mahamudra." This anthology of Kalu Rinpoche's writings and oral teachings resonates with his wisdom and compassion.

Comparing Kyabje Kalu Rinpoche with Milarepa, the greatest mediation master Tibet has ever known, His Holiness the Dalai Lama extols the author of Luminous Mind as a "beacon of inspiration" for spiritual practitioners of all traditions. Noting that "there have been few like him before or since," His Holiness urges us to delve into this remarkable anthology of the late Kalu Rinpoche's essential instructions so that we may encounter "the full range of Buddhist practice from the basic analysis of the nature of the mind up to its ultimate refinement in the teachings of Mahamudra." Drawn from both his lucid writings and his eloquent oral presentations, this unprecedented book lays bare the full grandeur of Kalu Rinpoche's legacy. At the same time, the gentle words and playful stories of this master of meditation are filled with a depth of clarity and warmth that could only arise from a profound realization of both wisdom and compassion.

The ESSENTIAL Kalu Rinpoche teachings!
By A Customer
There are now several books out there which present the teachings of His Eminence Kalu Rinpoche, and many of them are quite good. However, when people ask me to recommend one book, this is the one I tell them to get. This book is very well-organized, and provides a wealth of information about Tibetan Buddhism in general, and Kalu Rinpoche's lineages (Shangpa Kagyu and Karma Kagyu) in particular. The information about the Shangpa lineage is unparalleled. the book is organized so that a beginning student will not be overwhelmed, while long-time practitioners will be rewarded with a wealth of practical instructions. This book was organized by one of Rinpoche's foremost western disciples, Lama Denis Tondrup, and the notes and glossary, which I think he is resonsible for, are invaluable. If you wish to know about the different stages of the Tibetan Buddhist path, or if you feel a connection to Kalu Rinpoche but don't know much about his tradition, I cannot think of a better book to read. This is a book I return to again and again, and I always find just the right advice. His Holiness the Dalai Lama has written, in the forward to this book, that Rinpoche ws a "beacon of inspiration." Reading this book, you will come to see just how radiant that beacon continues to be!

Authentic dharma
By J. Conant
The book is a collection of teachings by Kalu Rinpoche, which are always excellent. A quote by Ken McCleod, Kalu Rinpoche's former student, says a lot: "In perusing these pages, I relived the days when I translated for Rinpoche, enthralled by his magical blend of anecdotes, crystal-clear explanations, and profound instruction." As I perused the book myself, preparing to write a review, I came across the following anecdote, which I'd like to share.

"An old Tibetan woman who practiced Dharma had a son who was a merchant and frequently traveled to India for business. One day his mother said to him, 'India is the Buddha's country. Please, be so kind as to bring me some relic of the Buddha that might inspire my devotion.'

The son left but, consumed with worry over his business, forgot his mother's request and returned home empty-handed. Again and again, he broke his word, and his elderly mother was desperate to have some relic before she died. So one day she said to him, 'If you forget my relic once more when you go to India, I'll kill myself right in front of you when you come back.'

But on his next trip to India, the son was preoccupied with business and forgot. On the way back, he remembered his mother's words. Fearing that she might actually carry out her plans, he wondered what to do. On the side of the road, he saw the skull of a dog, and from it he removed a tooth, which he carefully wrapped in fine cloth. When he arrived home, he said 'Look, Mother, look what I've brought you! A tooth of Buddha Shakyamuni himself!'

His mother believed him and, ecstatic, placed the tooth on her shrine, fervently praying and making offerings. It is said that the tooth made miraculous gems appear, and that when the woman died, extraordinary signs manifested.

A dog tooth in itself carries no particular blessing, but because the woman believed it to be the Buddha's tooth, the power of her faith caused her to receive the blessings of the Three Jewels.[Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha] Their blessing is pervasive, but it is our faith that opens us to it."

Wonderful, authoritative.
By Nicholas R. Hunter
This book is a wonderful, authoritative and comprehensive account of the path of Vajrayana Buddhism, as expounded by one of the greatest teachers of the last (20th) century.
I would only add that this book is perhaps not ideal for the complete novice. The teachings are presented in a rather dry, traditional style. People without some previous exposure to Tibetan Buddhist teachings might find the material somewhat confusing. Those interested in a more easily readable introduction to this topic might first try Sogyal Rinpoche's "The Tibetan Book Of Living And Dying" or Lama Surya Das' "Awakening The Buddha Within" before returning to this volume.

Review
"Tibetan Calligraphy is a beautiful book...It is wonderful to see a book dedicated to showing how every syllable can be beneficial." (Mandala)

"A lovely book which will inspire students with shining examples." (The Asian Reporter)

"A great artist in his own right, Sanje Elliott has studied and taught the art of Tibetan thangka painting for many years, mastering the traditional, highly refined styles of Tibet. Now in this book of traditional calligraphy, we can learn the necessary foundation of Tibetan writing, perhaps in order to explore later our own creative relationship with the language. I am grateful for this needed addition to the field and will use it immediately in teaching Tibetan." (Sarah Harding, Naropa University)

About the Author
Sanje Elliott has been practicing Tibetan arts since 1974. His first teacher was the American artist Glen Eddy, and he has studied with numerous Tibetan artists in Darjeeling and Kathmandu. A former head of the art department at Naropa University, he now lives in Portland, Oregon.

Easy to follow, and so beautiful!
By C. G. Henderson
This little book is a real gem. Beautifully written, lovely to look at on every page, and amazingly easy to follow. The very first day that I opened it, I was able to sit down and write the Tibetan alphabet following these instructions. Very clear, simple, and direct. Well grounded in and respectful of the TIbetan spiritual tradition, with gentle suggestions for approaching calligraphy as meditative practice in a culturally appropriate way. The author has made every effort to be generous and kind to the beginner, and this book is well worth trying if you are interested in learning to write the traditional "uchen" letters. You will need a straight-edged nib pen (2.5 mm) and calligraphic grid paper (8 to the inch) to make best use of these instructions.

Love for the south paws?
By Edward J Ficklin
I agree with other commentators that this is an excellent book, easy to follow and clearly laid out. As a lefty, however, I found I couldn't reproduce even the basic pen strokes. After a little experimenting, I decided to go out on a limb and just use my right hand and follow the directions exactly. It's working, but what a learning curve!

And one tiny critique: I didn't see (in the Kindle edition) any directions for the yatak subjoined character. I figured it out with some trial and error, so a minor quibble.

Written for children? Adults need this too
By Ethan
Don't tell anyone, but I actually bought this for my wife :). She's the type of person that always feels she should be doing something else instead of what she is doing right now.

Under the guise of it being a "bedtime story" for our children, she has now read it several times. The kids are also quoting it, so she's getting reinforcement that way too.

Very smart, very practical book that every one should read over and over again. Highly recommended.

Wonderful book. Great for adults as well as children!
By Top Mom
I bought this book for my son. I figured he likes pandas... and monkeys... and Mommy likes mindfulness. Ok Ok. I bought this book for me too. It is beautifully illustrated and written with style. I have also read it to therapy clients (I am a therapist). I hope this book spreads like wildfire. It's simply perfect.

Fabulous book for young and old.
By Tara Nicholson
...those of us who are older and read stories to children, and those being read to will enjoy this book. It is a fine lesson and reminder of the very basics of mindfulness. The text is very simple, my 2 year old enjoys it, as does my 5 year old. It is non-denominational.

From Publishers Weekly
When Loori, now abbot of Zen Mountain Monastery, began his Buddhist practice, he couldn't find much written on the subject of zazen (sitting meditation). This anthology's 22 selections seek to fill that perceived void. Eight ancient voices such as the Fourth Ancestor of Chinese Zen Great Master Dayi (A.D. 580-651) and Eihei Dogen (A.D. 1200-1253), the most important Japanese Zen master, are translated by accomplished scholars such as Thomas Cleary. Beyond a half dozen supporting texts in the glossary, the other selections are by contemporary authors such as Shunryu Suzuki (Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind). Taken together, the writing spans 1,500 years, all pointing to the practice of "just sitting," whereby no object (breath, candle, mandala, mantra, etc.) is used as a meditation focus. Differing from the other type of zazen wherein koans are studied, shikantaza-just sitting-is less pointed in its intent and methods. There are specific instructions here for location, posture and mental state, which will be helpful for beginners. Advanced practitioners can benefit from the more esoteric thoughts about "non-thinking." Minor flaws include repetitions about technique and contradictions about breath, the need for a teacher and so on. In the main, however, Loori has compiled a useful guide to "just sitting," promising "if you were to live for a hundred thousand years, you would never find in this life anything more powerful, more healing, [and] more empowering..
- more empowering."

Review
"At last a book that brings together writings on the subtlest and most fundamental Zen practice: just sitting. For the first time, now gathered in one volume, we can read 1500 years of the discovery of true path of discovery and realize what it means to be truly present for life as it is. Zen Master Daido Loori has gathered the essence of true meditation into this jewel of a book. We should not miss it." (Joan Halifax Roshi, Head Teacher, Upaya Zen Center)

"A valuable collection from an authority on this subtle and profound form of Zen. We have needed a book like this for a long time." (Professor Francis Dojun Cook, author of How to Raise an Ox)

"This is the single most comprehensive treasury of writings on the subject in English. It is likely to remain the most important collection for many years to come. Often misunderstood, the practice of shikantaza is authoritatively presented and carefully examined in two dozen essays by Chinese, Japanese, and American masters, along with an appendix of six seminal classic texts. This volume, spanning the centuries since Shakymuni Buddha to the present day, will prove indispensable to meditators and scholars alike. Roshi John Daido Loori has given us a rare treasure." (John Daishin Buksbazen, author of Zen Meditation in Plain English)

"'Just sit' is one of the most commonly heard --and least understood--phrases associated with Zen Buddhism. And yet 'just sitting,' or shikantaza--along with koan practice--is one of the two primary methods of Zen meditation. Zen master John Daido Loori brings together teachings of some of the most prominent ancient and modern teachers, including Dogen Zenji, Shunryu Suzuki, Sheng-yen, and Maezumi. The book also includes an appendix of foundational texts relating to the practice of shikantaza." (Tricycle)

"Wisdom is putting out good, interesting books, and here is one devoted to the meditation of just sitting, edited by John Daido Loori, who has done a fair amount of it. It's a cool book, an anthology drawing from a variety of authors, and it takes the risk of going deep." (John Tarrant, author, Zen teacher and director of the Pacific Zen Insititute [excerpted from Buddhadharma])

About the Author
John Daido Loori was, until his death in 2009, the spiritual leader and abbot of Zen Mountain Monastery in Mt. Tremper, New York. Trained in koan Zen as well as in the subtle school of Master Dogen's Zen, he was the Dharma heir of Hakuyu Taizan Maezumi Roshi. Devoted to maintaining authentic Zen training, he developed a distinctive style, called the Eight Gates of Zen, based on the noble eightfold path. Drawing on his background as scientist, artist, naturalist, and Zen priest, Abbot Loori was an American master who spoke directly to students from the perspective of a common background. His books include Mountain Record of Zen Talks and The Heart of Being.

Taigen Dan Leighton, Soto Zen priest and successor in the Suzuki Roshi lineage, received Dharma Transmission in 2000 from Reb Anderson Roshi and is Dharma Teacher at Ancient Dragon Zen Gate in Chicago. After residing for years at San Francisco Zen Center and Tassajara monastery, Taigen also practiced for two years in Kyoto, Japan. Taigen is author of Zen Questions: Zazen, Dogen, and the Spirit of Creative Inquiry, Faces of Compassion: Classic Bodhisattva Archetypes and Their Modern Expression, and Visions of Awakening Space and Time: Dogen and the Lotus Sutra. He has edited and co-translated several Zen texts including: Dogen's Extensive Record: A Translation of Eihei Koroku, Cultivating the Empty Field: The Silent Illumination of Zen Master Hongzhi, Dogen's Pure Standards for the Zen Community, and The Wholehearted Way, and has contributed to many other books and journals. Taigen teaches online at Berkeley Graduate Theological Union, from where he has a PhD. He has taught at other universities including Saint Mary's College, the California Institute of Integral Studies, and in Chicago at Meadville Lombard Theological Seminary and Loyola University Chicago. Taigen has long been active in social justice programs, including Peace and Environmental Activism.

A shining collection of writtings from various masters
By Daiun
For those who fear being crushed under the weight of John Daido Loori's arrogance - fear not. This book is a fasinating display of writings from various masters. While the theme of each essay is the practice of Shikataza we are also offered a smorgasbord of other insights. The excellent editing of this book provides the reader with an assembly of some of the best Zen writings to be found under one roof.

A must-read for Zen newcomers
By Shikantaza
Folks, The Art of Just Sitting, Second Edition: Essential Writings on the Zen Practice of Shikantaza should be basic reading for anyone new to Zen. It is a collection of essays and commentaries on zazen (sitting Zen, or sitting concentration) written by masters from China, Japan, and the West. Each brings a different perspective to bear on the subject, and the collection is quite illuminating (so to speak).

The editor, the late John Daido Loori, has assembled a wonderful collection in this small volume. The English translations are very colloquial and easy to read. I recommend this book most highly.

Having said all that great stuff, please understand that Zen is something you do, not something to read about for abstract study. Ergo, The Art of Just Sitting provides background, and is NOT a substitute for proper instruction by a certified teacher. If you live in a community of some size, get thee to a sitting group or Zen center and learn proper technique. It will take, gee, at least 10 minutes to learn proper posture and the beginnings of zazen mindfulness techniques.

I also recommend Sitting with Koans: Essential Writings on the Zen Practice of Koan Study - also edited by Loori - but only after getting something of a handle on zazen, the basic practice of Zen.
