Elegant studies of momentous ideological clashes

This volume gives a series of fine studies on major turning points in early church history. Bonner traces the first real schism, the Donatist rebellion in North Africa, with its concerns about the requirements of church membership and the right of Christians to choose their own leaders. He follows the reasoning and concerns which led Rome's newly official state church to a series of painful choices. In response to a rebel, anti-colonial sect, the authorities basically denied the right of Roman subjects to choose or reject their appointed religious leaders. Bonner explores the ensuing series of fierce debates over sin and freedom, which altered the course of religious history for at least 1,500 years. With elegant dispassion he clarifies the clashes of thought and feeling behind the momentous events unfolding from North Africa to Northumbria.

About the Author
David McKee was born and brought up in South Devon, where he went from grammar school to Plymouth Art College. Whilst still at college he started selling one-off cartoons to newspapers and on graduation, he began to contribute to such publications as Punch, Times Education Supplement and the Reader's Digest. His first book, Two Can Toucan was published in 1964 and since then he has written and illustrated numerous children's books. As well as his own books, David illustrates for a number of other writers including Michael Bond's Paddington Bear and Forrest Wilson's SuperGran books.

Pretty Neat!

This is not meant for children, if that's not obvious enough yet.

One thing is absolutely certain; this graphic novel could easily be called offensive to some readers. It unapologetically depicts graphically that which is written in the Christian bible. It does not interpret, it simply depicts. It takes the words and displays them as images.

This medium, the visual medium, can be offensive to the religious. It can also be offensive to the non-religious from cultures with laws against depictions of violence or abuse.

The artwork in the book is created from several different styles and the book has more than one author including Neil Gaiman! It's all black and white and unapologetically gory.

I enjoyed the book artistically and wasn't too shocked by the content because I'm a visual thinker and had already seen most of it in my head from my reading of the Christian bible in the past. I would have liked it if it had included more, but expense is probably a consideration.

About the Author
Tom J.F. Tillemans is Professor Emeritus of Buddhist Studies in the Faculty of Oriental Languages and Civilizations at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland. With a focus on Buddhist logic and epistemology, Madhyamaka philosophy, and comparative philosophy, he was from 1998-2006 co-editor of the Journal of the International Association of Buddhist Studies. Born in 1950 in the Netherlands and raised in Canada, he now serves as a senior project editor for the 84000 project tasked with translating the scriptures of the Tibetan Buddhist canon. He divides his time between Switzerland and British Columbia, Canada.

Transmogrification and intertextuality

Yes, the title of this review is meant to suggest the postmodern scholarship and the dense technical vocabulary employed by the essaysts in this volume. But if I choose to caution lay readers I don't intend to dissuade the more seasoned art history reader who will find in this collection a variety of scintillating commentary on artists who've managed to reconfigure and displace the ideological ground upon which art criticism has been erected. The quality is exceptional and the essays are of long-standing value, often referenced and referencing other scholars and approaches. It is a fun read but also a cerebral conceptual description of the phenomenological surrender that has repeatedly overdetermined and coopted the traditions of modernist scholarship. As Jhon Roberts concicely and lucidly describes these critical readings as evincing a position towards art history that is informed by "a radical disdain for notions of a unitary field of art historical investigation, and - at least since the sixties - one that centers on the superfluity of historical analysis in the face of individual aesthetic experiences." Exclusively dealing with anglophone critical episodes this anthology charts ideological struggles within critical interruptions whose theoretical approach defines the terrain of recent scholarship. The works discussed range from Picabia to Cindy Sherman with exceptional stops through Jasper Johns and Gerhard Richter. Of outstanding contribution is Catherine Lupton's reading of Mary Kelley's work and Jeffrey Steele's essay on Robert Smithson. But to be fair the entire collection is worth careful reading and should prove to be a continued resource for contemporary scholarship.

excellent title; excellent book - Natural (Courageous) Rebels

Dr. Beckles has researched and written an appropriately titled book. I felt he did an impressive job of pulling together information on enslaved Barbadian WOMEN whose rebellious actions - some covert, others amazingly overt, all courageous (when examined against seemingly insurmountable cruelties from other "humans")- could only be seen as completely NATURAL. These women like any other normal person - be they male or female, black, white, gristle, grunted or grey - had a NATURAL desire/ impulse/longing/ right/ demand for freedom of body, mind and spirit and would rebel against any kind of shackle. He deliberately shifted the focus TO women, an often neglected subject and as a woman born in the Caribbean, I loved the result which confirms that it is completely un-natural to believe the lie that ANY person "loved"/ "loves" slavery and brutal massa/ mistress no matter their inhumanity. (I purchased and read Centering Women - just as good).

Very well researched book. Plentiful use of primary sources. Well written. I'm glad I read it. It will give you a view of life as a slave woman in Barbados that a generic knowledge of slavery doesn't offer.

The book itself was great, but it wreaked of stale smoke and the edges of the pages were yellowed: to me, that does not constitute "used in good condition". Anyone who is a fan of Mel Brooks' work should have this in their collection, but I will buy a new copy instead.

Cuba's economy, strangled by foreign debt, is overdependent on sugar exports of declining value. Increasing waste and muddle of the bureaucracy, growing inequality between workers' and managers' wages, high absenteeism and greater rationing of basic goods all point to a severe crisis in Cuba's socialist experiment, according to French leftist Habel. Her prescription for change includes political democracy, freedom of speech and action, granting of decision-making power to workers and letting "the whole of society take control of its own development." Habel, who has visited Cuba regularly since 1962, writes as a disillusioned follower of Castro's revolution, which makes her heavily footnoted tract dull and plodding, at times an apologia. Chapters cover Cuba's militant foreign policy, the government's alleged involvement in drug trafficking and its strained relations with Gorbachev, who refused to cancel Cuba's debt.

This timely work analyzes a question on the mind of all observers of the international political scene: will Cuba be the next to shed its socialist leadership? The author, a French activist sympathetic to the Revolution who has visited the island since 1962, rightly praises and criticizes Cuban development. She lays the primary blame for the failures of the Revolution on a bureaucratic state and argues that it is not too late to institute democratic socialism. Although Castro receives his fair share of the blame, many critics would consider her too generous on his human rights record and personally motivated vengeance, while also questioning whether Cuba indeed became economically independent. Recommended for most libraries.
