Review
"A marvelously lucid work on... this little understood tradition of Buddhist yoga." (Yoga World)

"[A] superb outline of the secret Terma tradition... [It is] erudite, comprehensive, and full of scholarship and insight, yet at the same time is approachable and offers a good overview of Vajrayana as well as specific information on the Termas. It is well-presented and illustrated, and is a title you will read more than once. This is a lot of wisdom packed within its 300 pages..." (Media Resources)

"The tradition of terma should be of more than passing interest to Western students of the Tibetan Buddhist traditions: a great many of us practice at least some such teachings, and sometimes our practice is entirely based upon them. Despite the proliferation of teachings derived from termas, however, there has been an almost total lack of information concerning the genre of terma itself. This book helps to fill that void." (Professor Matthew Kapstein, translator of The Nyingma School of Tibetan Buddhism)

An Invaluable Work
By Lawrence E. Pintak
The Hidden Teachings of Tibet serves as the core reference work for anyone interested in the terma, or hidden treasure, tradition of Tibet. Tulku Thondup, who has lived in the U.S. since 1980, provides a solid overview of the various types of treasures, how they are concealed and discovered, details on the so-called dakini script in which they are written, and insights into the tertons, or treasure discoverers, themselves. It is all organized in a format that makes for easy reference. Originally published in 1986, the book was issued in paperback in 1997. Tulku Thondup was also a key resource for another valuable book on the terma traditions, Apparitions of the Self by Prof. Janet Gyatso. Reviewer: Lawrence Pintak is a journalist and author who writes frequently on Buddhism and spirituality.

C'est tres nifty. There may be something hidden in a rock near you. Don't bother looking for it unless you're a Dakini. Or married to one.

Rethinking the French Revolution: Marxism and the Revisionist Challenge, by George C. Comninel

Historians generally—and Marxists in particular—have presented the revolution of 1789 as a bourgeois revolution: one which marked the ascendance of the bourgeois as a class, the defeat of a feudal aristocracy, and the triumph of capitalism. Recent revisionist accounts, however, have raised convincing arguments against the idea of the bourgeois class revolution, and the model on which it is based.

In this provocative study, George Comninel surveys existing interpretations of the French Revolution and the methodological issues these raise for historians. He argues that the weaknesses of Marxist scholarship originate in Marx’s own method, which has led historians to fall back on abstract conceptions of the transition from feudalism to capitalism. Comninel reasserts the principles of historical materialism that found their mature expression in Das Kapital; and outlines an interpretation which concludes that, while the revolution unified the nation and centralized the French state, it did not create a capitalist society.

Outstanding new Marxist thinker
By Bill Dewey/Reclaiming Quarterly
This volume presupposes some familiarity with leftist theories of the French Revolution. A generation ago, Alfred Cobban undermined the standard Marxist "bourgeois revolution" interpretation of the revolution, but offered little in its place. Around 1990, George Comninel examined the wreckage and began to outline new directions. This is one of the more promising works in the Marxist tradition in recent years, and will hopefully be followed by a more "constructive" volume that fully rethinks the French Revolution and its impact on theory and practice today.

Seianti Hanunia Tlesnasa: The Story of an Etruscan Noblewoman (British Museum Research Publication)From British Museum Press

The magnificent painted terracotta sarcophagus of the Etruscan noblewoman Seianti Hanunia Tlesnasa has for well over a century been a star exhibit at the British Museum, but it is only in relatively recent times that attention has turned to the skeleton found within, which appears to be the best preserved Etruscan skeleton now in existence. The initial aim of the research was to reconstruct the face of Seianti using the techniques of forensic medicine, in order to compare it with that of the reclining, full-sized image of the dead woman on the sarcophagus lid. This already yielded striking information about the Etruscans as the initiators of realistic portraiture - we believe this to be the first proven identifiable portrait in western art. Other avenues opened up allowing the researchers to discover fascinating facts about Seianti's health and dental problems, her lifestyle, her age at death, and an accident in her teens that had far-reaching consequences. The pathologist's findings have offered evidence for Etruscan mortuary practices hitherto unparalleled. Consideration of the silver tomb goods, the jewellery worn by Seianti and the radiocarbon dating of the bones has indicated a dating of the burial earlier in the Hellenistic period than previously accepted. The construction of the sarcophagus itself, a remarkable feat of firing, and the techniques of its decoration form the subject of other papers, while the circumstances of the find in 1876, the archaeology and evidence about the Seiante family are discussed in detail. A brief survey of the Etruscans and events contemporary with Seianti's lifetime help to set the burial in its ancient context.

Another Experiment in Reader Tolerance from the Mad Genius of Mainstream Comics
By EisNinE
The Third Volume of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is closer to The Black Dossier than Volumes 1 and 2, which means it's a polarizing work that is going to frustrate some, and please others. Each of the three chapters, 1910, 1969, and 2009, introduce period specific references that become increasingly arcane. There's little chance you'll pick up every detail Moore and O'Neill dump in the readers lap, but following the trail beyond the book can lead in fascinating directions. It's a complex work, and perhaps another experiment in reader tolerance. I enjoyed it, but I'll suggest that new readers start elsewhere (obviously) and fans who disliked The Black Dossier will probably dislike Volume 3.

Their last mission was in a Cold War Britain of the late 1950's, where Mina Murray and the rejuvenated Allan Quatermain risked their apparently endless lives to steal the ultra-classified documents detailing the secret history of the League. As enemies of the (literally) Orwellian state, they were pursued by fictional weapons of statecraft that included a humorously inept young spy named 'Jimmy' Bond.

Volume three takes us back almost 50 years, introducing a League that has replaced it's dead and retired veterans with the immortal hermaphrodite* Orlando (*not the correct term, since he/she shifts back and forth between genders for extended periods, and possesses only one set of sexual characteristics at a time), the occultist Thomas Carnacki, and 'gentleman thief' A.J. Raffles. It also introduces the teenaged daughter of Captain Nemo, Janni, who abandons her ailing father and her birthright of piracy and slaughter, seeking a new life for herself in England. The League, meanwhile, finds itself up against an enemy who has grand ambitions that involve shaping the future of humanity to fit his own desires. With a stratagem that transcends death and time, Mina Murray is the only person capable of following and defeating Oliver Haddo (a character taken from 'The Magician' by W. Somerset Maugham, based on the infamous 'Great Beast' and co-founder of The Order of the Golden Dawn, Aleister Crowley; Crowley later assumed the sobriquet himself to critique the novel), in a struggle that spans the course of the 20th Century.

For completists, the book is well-designed, with thick, semi-gloss paper of the highest quality and sturdy, cloth-bound covers -- Top Shelf didn't cut corners by using the cheap, acidic paper and stamped particle-board that DC do quite regularly (my copy of The Black Dossier hardcover has already yellowed, while older books printed on better stock remain arctic white. Even the 'glossy' paper DC uses is still thin, pulpy, acidic trash that puts an expiry date on purchases. They do use premium paper on Absolute editions and the more expensive hardcovers, however). So even if you don't love the course Moore has been charting the last few years, at the very least you end up with a well-produced book. It includes all the prose stories and ads that came with the softcovers, and features painted endpapers by O'Neill. The format is the standard 7 x 10 inches (roughly) of The Black Dossier and the Nemo books, one size down from the LOEG: Volume 1 and 2 Omnibus hardcover.

It's not for everyone, but it's one of those stories you might feel differently about in a couple years. Or maybe not. {85/100}

Sad, Mr
By Jason Henry Evans
While Moore is clearly at the top of his game with this one, I couldn't give it a complete five stars because some of his references in literature, film and pop culture, became too obscure, even for me. I realized this when I had to go to Wikipedia to unpack everything Moore was writing. In addition, I fully expected the end of the series with Century and yet he leaves the door open for more adventures.
Let me explain why this is a problem.
Alan Moore was very upset with DC comics for continuing his Watchmen series after he was gone. He went on and on about how the failings of comics were that the characters never, truly, have an end to their story arc. Moore wrote all of his comics so there would be an end to their arcs. Yet, here he is, in LXG: Century, leaving the door open for future stories with a small blurb at the end. Sad, Mr. More, Sad.
Now, other than that, this was an excellent story with unexpected poignancy and surprises. I very much liked it. If you love LXG, than you'll love it, too.

Good luck following the plot

The first two volumes are classics. The third, not so much. Good luck following the plot. Moore went off the rails a little bit with this one.

PreS?These books feature a colorful patchwork elephant in their title subjects. Elmer's winsome personality shines through as he romps with a variety of wild animals from all over the world?polar bears and leopards, elephants and kangaroos?in this jungle fantasyland. Elmer's Friends, the most sophisticated of the four, leaves readers with the message that we can be different and still get along. The other texts are fairly generic, according to the concept depicted; most of the illustrations, done in bold, textured paints, are appealing and will encourage responses from toddlers. Zen Master Who?: A Guide to the People and Stories of Zen, by James Ishmael Ford

Zen Master Who? is the first-ever book to provide a history of Zen's arrival in North America, surveying the shifts and challenges to Zen as it finds its Western home. With the exception of parts of Rick Field's How the Swans Came to the Lake, there has been no previous attempt to write this chronicle.

James Ishmael Ford begins by tracing Zen's history in Asia, looking at some of Zen's most seminal figures--the Sixth Ancestor Huineng, Dogen Zenji (the founder of the Soto Zen school), Hakuin Ekaku (the great reformer of the Rinzai koan way), and many others--and then outlines the state of Zen in North America today. Clear-eyed and even-handed, Ford shows us the history and development of the institution of Zen--both its beauty and its warts.

Ford also outlines the many subtle differences in teachings, training, ordination, and transmission among schools and lineages. This book will aid those looking for a Zen center or a teacher, but who may not know where to start. Suggesting what might be possible, skillful, and fruitful in our communities, it will also be of use to those who lead the Zen centers of today and tomorrow.

From Publishers Weekly
Taxonomists rejoice: for all who have wondered about the difference between a roshi and a sensei, this book sorts these two kinds of Zen Buddhist teachers and offers lots more information about Zen schools and influences. A longtime Zen student and Unitarian minister, Ford is a sympathetic insider who knows much of his history firsthand, yet sees clearly enough to acknowledge the distortions and even abuses in the history of Zen as it came to this country. His delineations form a road map to persons and places in Zen in America. His eye is especially keen in appreciating the early teachers who brought Zen from Japan and adapted it to an audience growing in numbers and receptivity to Asian religious wisdom. End matter, including a guide to finding a teacher, is helpful; missing, however, is some graphic representation—a family tree, perhaps?—that could have summarized paragraphs of prose about lineages and who taught whom. The very existence of the book is evidence of the growth and maturation of a small but culturally significant group of what Ford rightly characterizes as religious believers. Beyond the obvious niche audience, this book holds interest for all curious about American Zen Buddhism and contemporary expressions of American spirituality. (Nov.)

Review
"Ford, a Soto Zen priest and Unitarian Universalist minister, has put together a rich and eminently readable resource on Zen in the West. He begins with an overview of the history of Zen, then thoroughly covers the teachers who first came West, the traditions and practices they brought with them, the schools they founded, and their many successors. Ford's engaging portraits of the many personalities that make up Wester Zen today are especially interesting and can be read straight through or dipped into here and there for a satisfying taste of any one of the diverse forms the tradition is taking today." (Tricycle: The Buddhist Review)

"For all who have wondered about the difference between a roshi and a sensei, this book sorts these two kinds of Zen Buddhist teachers and offers lots more information about Zen schools and influences. "James Ford is a charming and thoughtful guide to the who, how and why of Zen coming to the West. That's because he is a Zen master himself, with an unparalleled knowledge of the people, the big trends and the interesting details. James is a major figure in adapting Zen to America and this book will give you the inside picture." (John Tarrant, author of Bring Me the Rhinoceros (and Other Zen Koans to Bring You Joy))

"In his forty-year study of the tradition, Zen teacher and Unitarian Universalist minister James Ishmael Ford has digested the 'whos and whats' of Zen, presenting a personable and readable introduction to its major players and teachings, both in the East and West. Zen Master WHO? is a friendly orientation to Zen for the new student of Buddhism, and the book's final section, in which Ford considers the future of Zen in the West, will prompt discussion among its older students." (Shambhala Sun)

"Provides a thorough orientation for the prospective student of North American Zen... in a balanced, straightforward style, peppered with enough original anecdotes to make it enjoyable, even to Zen students already familiar with the basic material." (Buddhadharma)

"At last, a book that helps those beginning Zen practice figure out who's who and how they became a Who. Zen Master Who? is a greatly useful guide, bringing together the legendary, the historical, and the contemporary in one compact, engaging read. You'll feel like an insider after reading this book." (Sumi Loundon, editor of Blue Jean Buddha and The Buddha's Apprentices)

"Zen Master Who? is a comprehensive survey of the Asian masters who first brought Zen to America and of their American students who have been empowered to carry on their legacy. It tells the story of American Zen clearly - and honestly. By telling the story of real people, with real problems and real accomplishments, Ford makes us ponder just what it is we expec from practice, from teachers and from ourselves. This is a great book." (Barry Magid, author of Ordinary Mind)

"What happened when the Bodhidharma came to the West? From an insider's perspective, James Ishmael Ford tells us stories and gives colorful portrayals of the major figures linked to the ongoing transmission of Zen in the North American continent. A respected Zen Master himself, he describes his spiritual ancestors and Dharma sisters and brothers in candid and also endearing terms." (Ruben Habito, author of Living Zen, Loving God and Healing Breath)

"Ford brings to all his work a keen mind grounded in a thorough understanding of Zen practice and the nuances which pervade its development in the Western world. His insights are clear, unbiased and aim at presenting an honest picture of the development of Zen." (Diane Eshin Rizzetto, author of Waking Up to What You Do)

"Apart from Rick Fields' classic How the Swans Came to the Lake, reportage on the history of Zen in the West has tended to center on one or at most two traditions, e.g., Japanese Soto and Rinzai schools. James Ishmael Ford has instead taken a broad perspective, covering not only the Japanese and Chinese pioneers and influences but also extending his coverage to Korean, Vietnamese, and the syncretic Harada/Yasutani lineages. I found his clear account of the Korean Kwan Um school's Dharma transmission model to be especially interesting. Informal in tone and extensive in coverage, Zen Master Who? should prove both informative and absorbing reading for a new generation of Zen students and teachers alike." (John Daishin Buksbazen, author of Zen Meditation in Plain English)

"Enlightened" Doesn't Mean Ethical, Compassionate or Good Teacher
By Len Moskowitz
Before I start reading a book I don't know if I'll be moved to write a review. But when I find myself making notes in the margins as I read (as I did with this one), there's a good chance that I'll review the book to help others decide if the book will be useful to them.

James Ishmael Ford's fine book "Zen Master Who?" is worth reading if you want a bit of information about who's who in the Western Zen Buddhist world, how it got the way it is and where it might be heading.

It's written in three parts. The first restates what he calls the Buddhist founding "myths". The second tries to to give us a feel for the story of the people who brought Zen to the West from China, Japan, Korea and Vietnam, concentrating a bit more on Japan, as to-date the Japanese have had the most visible impact on establishing Zen in the West. The third and shortest part discusses the directions in which Zen in the West may be headed.

My most serious criticism? I felt that Ford's description of the last few generations of Zen Masters was not even-handed. I didn't appreciate how the serious character failings (e.g., inappropriate sexual relationships, substance abuse, financial misdeeds) of some Zen Masters were described in some depth while others were only mentioned in passing and those of many others (including his teachers) were omitted completely.

In the same vein, he glosses over the critical discussion of what "enlightenment" means in the context of unethical behavior by simply saying that Zen Masters are not perfect masters, not "gurus" and are subject to the same desires and temptations that all of us face. We would have been better served if he'd spent a few more pages (or a chapter) discussing how one can be an fully awakened master and still be an alcoholic, an adulterer, a supporter of national violence on an international scale, or financially irresponsible to friends, family and sangha. In the recent history of Zen, some of the best known Masters suffered these serious failings. There are lots of very odd people in the Zen world, and to choose a teacher one must know and understand this.

In his discussion of Christianity and Judaism in Zen, he misses an obvious disparity. We find Christian clergy from many different backgrounds (spanning the range from Jesuit Catholics to Unitarian Universalists and everything in between) becoming Zen lay-people, teachers and masters. In severe contrast, though many notable teachers and lay-folk in Western Zen come from Jewish backgrounds, they almost invariably are secular or non-religious Jews. There are essentially no traditionally religious Jews associated with (much less teaching) Zen in the West, and certainly no traditionally observant rabbis. Isn't this disparity worth some discussion?

I enjoyed his concise formulation of the Second Truth, of how suffering as the result of clinging is related to the co-arising of all things.

His very short (three page) appendix on "What to Look For When Looking for a Zen Teacher" can be boiled down to three suggestions: get into it slowly to see how you like it, ask other people about the teacher and try to evaluate the teacher by the quality of their students and the community as a whole. All of this is obvious but worth the time and space he devotes to it.

If you're interested in this book, you might also read "Zen in America" by Helen Tworkov (Kodansha Globe, 1994). Tworkov discusses five Zen masters (four of whom are mentioned by Ford), but in much more depth and detail.

A great survey of Zen
By Michael J. Mccormick
I found this book a very useful and entertaining survey. It covers the most seminal figures of the East Asian Zen traditions that are now found in North America and there is a very clear exposition of the practices of shikan taza (just sitting) and koan introspection. The capsule biographies of the many men and women who were instrumental in establishing Zen in North America were very interesting and really helped me to understand who was who, what was what, and most importantly of all what is out there now for someone who wants to take up Zen practice. The last part of the book goes over important issues concerning the continuing adaptation of Zen outside its original East Asian setting. There is also an appendix containing advice on what a beginner should look for in a Zen teacher, which I think would help save many people unecessary grief. All in all it is a great book for beginners, and even those who have been involved in Zen for awhile might find this a helpful summary and overview of the many traditions (including Korean, Vietnamese, and Chinese lineages that are now in America in addtion to the Japanese lines which themselves crisscross).

Interesting Information for Zendoids - Highly Readable
By W. Giesey
Among the rash of current historical/biographical Zen offerings, James Ford's Zen Master Who stands out as one of the more informative and certainly one of the most enjoyable reads. He starts with a focused reprise of the key historical Zen myths, and includes not only the thematic essentials but also by anecdote gives these stories a human dimension. He then moves on to his main subject, profiling a prodigious number of notable individuals and trends in recent and current Western Zen evolution, in a style both informative and enjoyable to read. Ford's wry humor, insight and compassion are apparent on every page, and the effect is engagingly conversational and personal. Another unique element of this book is the summary and discussion of the implications of all this material; where it might be leading us, and where we might try leading it. Not surprisingly, given that Ford is not only a Dharma heir but also a Unitarian Universalist minister, he evokes some intriguing possibilities for a liberal Western Zen of focused practice combined with committed social action, in a community of responsible and open-minded mutual support and self-determination. Altogether a lively and thought-provoking work.

Tantric Buddhism in East AsiaFrom Brand: Wisdom Publications

While the tantric Buddhism found in the Indian and Tibetan traditions is increasingly recognized, in East Asia tantric Buddhism remains largely unknown. This collection brings together twelve key essays on tantric Buddhism in East Asia, drawn from sources that are not commonly available. The collection is organized into four sections: China and Korea, Japan, Deities and Practices, and Influences on Japanese Religion.

Payne's work, which brings together in one place a "critical mass" of scholarship, will create a sea change in the understanding of the history of East Asian Buddhism and Tantra.

Fine Collection of Fine Articles
By Crazy Fox
Don't let the slightly New Age look of the cover fool you. This book consists of a number of articles all of high scholarly calibre. Except for the editor's introduction (which includes an interesting if slightly nitpicky consideration of the category "tantric" and other relevant terms), these articles have appeared before, but scattered in more or less inaccessible sources. To have them all easily available together here is a real godsend (so to speak). Also, and perhaps accidentally, a good balance is struck between studies of the esoteric tradition in its classical, clearly formulated aspect and explorations of its interaction and osmosis with other Buddhist traditions.

By the way, the articles are:

1. Tantrism in China (Chou Yi-Liang)

2. Esoteric Buddhism in Korea (Henrik H. Sorensen)

3. On Esoteric Practices in Korean Son Buddhism during the Choson Period (Henrik H. Sorensen)

4. Kukai's "Principle of Attaining Buddhahood with the Present Body" (Hisao Inagaki)

5. The Five Mysteries of Vajrasattva: A Buddhist Tantric View of the Passions and Enlightenment (Ian Astley)

6. An Annotated Translation of the Pancabhisambodhi Practice of the Tattvasamgraha (Dale Todaro)

7. The Twelve-Armed Deity Daisho Kongo and His Scriptural Sources (Pol Vanden Broucke)

8. Breath of Life: The Esoteric Nenbutsu (James H. Sanford)

9. Shugendo, the Traditions of En no Gyoja, and Mikkyo Influence (H. Byron Earhart)

10. The Cave and the Womb World (Helen Hardacre)

Tantric Buddhism in East Asia
By Mysterium Ineffable
"Tantric Buddhism is East Asia" is a welcome collection of essays on Vajrayana Buddhism and the many guises it takes in East Asia. As a casual reader of Buddhist texts I found it to be most enjoyable and recommend it as an introduction to the general climate of what has come to be known in the West as "tantric" Buddhism. The collection is edited by Richard Payne, a Western scholar of religion who happens to be an ordained Shingon priest; though you wouldn't know this from reading his introductory essay. It has some merit, but the author seems excessively spooked by what he sees as orientalist authoritarianism which mire classic Buddhist studies in the West. Without doubt modern philosophical currents shaped the study of Buddhism in the West and continues to do so for the most part to this day. Unfortunately Payne fails to see any "authoritarianism" in his thoroughly "Western academic" approach to the study Buddhism.

As far as the essays are concerned it would be hard to single out the most important essays because they are all quite diverse and important in their own right. Those which appealed to me were James Stanford's "Breath of Life: The Esoteric Nembutsu", H. Byron Earhart's "Shugendo, the Traditions of En no Gyoja and Mikkyo Influence", Henrick Sorensen's "Esoteric Buddhism in Korea", Hisao Inagaki's "Kukai's 'Principle of Attaining Buddhahood with the Present Body'", and Ian Astley's "The Five Mysteries of Vajrasattva: A Buddhist Tantric View of the Passions and Enlightenment". I especially enjoyed the essay on Shugendo, a topic so rare in studies of Japanese religion, yet one of the most interesting for me personally because of its synthesis of Mikkyo and the indigenous mountain asceticism (sangaku shinko) of Japan.

What makes this collection valuable is the scarcity of quality introductions to Vajrayana outside of the well-known Tibetan tradition and the extreme difficulty one finds in accessing the inner logic of Vajrayana, or more popularly "tantric" Buddhism. The essays here are by and large introductory yet scholarly rigorous and, in the case of Korean Esoteric Buddhism, the first of their kind that I've seen. This field is still opening up as interest in Vajrayana increases and as the prejudices which saw in Vajrayana a falling away from the purity of the "original Dharma" begin themselves to fall away.

Buddhist Psychology: The Foundation of Buddhist Thought, Volume 3, by Geshe Tashi Tsering

This new volume from the Foundation of Buddhist Thought series, provides a stand-alone and systematic - but accessible - entry into how Buddhism understands the mind. Geshe Tashi, an English-speaking Tibetan monk who lives in London, was trained from boyhood in a traditional Tibetan monastery and is adept in communicating this classical training to a modern Western audience.

Buddhist Psychology addresses both the nature of the mind and how we know what we know. Just as scientists observe and catalog the material world, Buddhists for centuries have been observing and cataloging the components of inner experience. The result is a rich and subtle knowledge that can be harnessed to the goal of increasing human well being.

Review
"A user's manual for the human psyche! Geshe Tashi Tsering is great at making difficult material accessible. Buddhist Psychology provides kind and practical guidance for analyzing and transforming your mind." (Lorne Ladner, author of The Lost Art of Compassion)

"Here, Buddhism's unique, time-tested way of viewing the mind is explained so that followers can understand their anger and aversion and develop equanimity, patience, and love." (Eastern Horizon)

"With this series of books drawn from his highly successful courses, Geshe Tashi's insights can be enjoyed by a wide audience of both specialists and newcomers to the Buddhist tradition. His presentations, never divorced from the basic humanity and warmth of his personality, combine rigor and accessibility." (Thupten Jinpa, principal translator for the Dalai Lama and director of the Institute of Tibetan Classics)

"Although coming from a traditional Gelugpa presentation of the Buddhist path, these books are written for a modern western audience, and therefore 'happiness' is presented as a principle goal, alongside the more traditional goal of enlightenment. The author's personal tone and his fluent language, combined with his obvious mastery of the material help to make the series a tremendously valuable resource for the study of basic Buddhist teachings from a Tibetan perspective." (Buddhadharma)

If you want to learn anything about the Buddhist's belief of The Mind, you've come to the right place. This text includes explanations for the 51 mental factors and also the 6 main minds. Some of the explanations are a bit confusing, but after reading the entire book (it's not very thick, maybe a half-inch or so) I was able to comprehend the Buddhist thoughts on the Mind.

Nicely explains the Buddhist theory of the mind in lucid modern prose. A good summary of a very complex subject. The author has a whole series of similar books on Buddhist topics; this one was so good I am considering reading the others.

Simple and deep
By Jose Joacir dos santos
Most of the books in Buddhist Psychology are not direct to the point. In this case, the author understands that he is writting to a general public or a non-buddhist public, who may not do meditation practices. You may have to read it step by step to absorve the contents but, for sure, you will enjoy reading it.

From Publishers Weekly
A former spiritual and temporal head of Dragyab State, Khem, East Tibet, who has been a research fellow and lecturer in Tibetan Buddhism for nearly 30 years at the University of Bonn, Dagyab Rinpoche is excellently placed to analyze Buddhist symbols (tendrel) and symbolism in Tibetan culture from both Western and Tibetan perspectives. Unfortunately, an opportunity has been missed. Not only is the interesting concept of chu (or "essence-juice and vigor") which informs Tibetan symbolic perception and cultural spirit dropped after the introduction, but the introduction's thought-provoking discussion about methodological parameters for symbol-interpretation is not elaborated either. Indeed, the book is content to list and explicate symbols before trailing off into a wholly inadequate conclusion. This sketchiness is partly offset by the descriptions, many of which have a dictionary-like concision. The book ends with technical apparatus of use only to Tibetan scholars.

Review
"This timely book preserves something very valuable-symbols as the visual manifestation of the psyche. The author deserves our thanks. Highly recommended." (Herbert Guenther, author of Wholeness Lost and Wholeness Regained)

"Dagyab Rinpoche is an extraordinary person who combines Western scholarship with the depth of the wisdom of being a Tibetan lama." (Martin Kalff, founding member of the International Society for Sandplay Therapy)

"As Dagyab Rinpoche defines each symbol, he further illuminates the concepts inherent in Tibetan Buddhism which is, in its earthly manifestation, voluptuously visible." (Booklist)

"Fills a long felt gap in the study of Tibetan art and symbols in English." (The Tibet Journal)

"Interesting for both the specialist and any interested reader." (Himalayan Research Bulletin)

"Symbolism is the language of the human spirit and this book is the most systematic study of its Tibetan idiom that has yet appeared." (Huston Smith, author of The Illustrated World's Religions)

A wonderful short introduction to Tibetan Buddhism
By A Customer
I'm not a practicing Tibetan Buddhist, but I've acquired a fair amount of knowledge through osmosis: I do volunteer work for a Tibetan refugee relief organization. One slow afternoon in our shop, I picked up this book to improve my knowledge of the iconography in the graphics we sell, and was blown away. Not only has the author written a clear, readable explication of the symbolism, but the book is also a terrific introduction to fundamental Tibetan Buddhist beliefs. The average Tibetan may not be able to elucidate the intricacies of the sacred texts, or practice the stylized form of debate that forms an important part of a monk's training. But the book gives great insight into what this average Tibetan actually believes. Now I feel I have a better understanding of how the Tibetans' Buddhism has sustained them through persecution, exile, and attempts by the Chinese government to stamp out their culture. (And the Fur-Bearing Fish isn't a refugee from a Dr. Seuss book, but a symbol with profound meaning.) This is a great little book, and I recommend it enthusiastically.

UNDERSTANDABLE
By A Customer
I'm 52 years old and was fairly smug about what I had learned after 20 years or so of pretty serious reading. Then into my life, through the miracle of "amazon.comm" comes by Dagyab Rinpoche: hold on to your beliefs folks: get ready for a roller-coaster ride through Tibetan philosophy as translated from that philosophical language: German. And at the end there are instructions on how to take care of and treat the book and other books of similar nature. Scary

A book to study and use as part of your spiritual practice.
By M. Corcoran
This was sensitively and beautifully done by someone who clearly is deeply connected with his religion. I find re-reading it a number of times is helpful to assimilate the material and make it your own. In one place he does discuss how an "educated Tibetan" would understand more of each symbol, and I wish he had done more of that kind of "extensive explanation." I would have liked to see more of linking the symbols with the literature and art to help Tibetan art come "more alive." I don't know if anything like that exists.

I would most certainly recommend this book. I read it daily as part of my spiritual practice/ study. As a Catholic, I also try to link the symbols with my own religion.
