Review
"In this outstanding collection of essays, eleven authors explore in fascinating detail the 1,300-year history of Sino-Tibetan relations and, in so doing, not only upend the conventional narrative about this encounter, but also provide a model for future research on the role that Buddhism played in shaping historical interactions across Eurasia. Indeed, on account of this larger theoretical concern and its important implications for our understanding of Asian history, let us hope that this volume receives the wide readership it so rightfully deserves." (The Journal of Asian Studies)

"Buddhism Between Tibet and China, under the careful editorship of Matthew T. Kapstein and with the collaboration of ten exceptionally well qualified specialists, reveals that the relationship between 'the Rooftop of the World' and 'the Middle Kingdom' has not always been one of revolt and repression. Rather, what we find in this highly informative and aptly illustrated volume is that-throughout the past thirteen hundred years and continuing right up to the present moment-Chinese individuals from various walks of life have often displayed a serious interest in Tibetan Buddhism. Not only have they learned much from this complex, captivating religion, they have also taken concrete steps to support and popularize it. This fine book offers a welcome palliative to all the harsh rhetoric that customarily surrounds the Tibet-China conundrum." (Victor Mair, Professor of Chinese Language and Literature University of Pennsylvania)

"This splendid book about the multifaceted Tibetan-Chinese interactions through Buddhism will quickly become established as ground-breaking and authoritative in its field. The book is diverse in the different regions of the Chinese world that come under discussion, from Tibet, Qinghai and Sichuan to Beijing and Taiwan; and in the periods considered, which range from the seventh to the twenty-first centuries. And this book is a veritable storehouse of insight and information on Tibetan Buddhism in China, including art, thought and eminent personalities. The writing is objective, detailed and highly readable. I recommend it strongly." (Colin Mackerras Ph.D. Professor Emeritus, Griffith University)

"While the thorny issue of Tibet's autonomy is still not resolved, the story of the religious relationship between Tibet and China needs to be told. It has recently become a rich area of study, and researchers can now demonstrate that in the past Buddhism served to mediate relations between Tibetan ecclesiastical powers and the Chinese imperial court, and in effect, was a cultural lingua franca. This richly rewarding book is a part of Wisdom's Studies in Indian and Tibetan Buddhism series and its eleven contributors have offered case studies spanning more than a millennium, right through to the Dalai Lama's 1997 visit to Taiwan." (Mandala)

Buddhism between Tibet and China

Interesting book, however, one chapter appears to be not really about Buddhism. Looks like it was a conference panel which was put into a book and I assume it is updated with more current information. Would be a good read for students of Tibetan Buddhism.

Beyond Compare.
By Sleepy Hermit
This book is excellent in its presentation of the thirty seven practices of a bodhisattva. What I enjoy about it most is that each practice is followed by a succession of pith instructions from the sutras, then from Indian masters such as Asanga, Atisha, Nagarjuna, Santideva, and then from later Tibetan masters and then from the Author of the book himself. Each pith instruction expounds each practice in a different way which reinforces the meaning of the practice. After reading all of the explanations you have a really great sense of each practice. I absolutely love the style that this book is presented in. Thank you Mrs. Koppl for all of the hard work that went into translating this.

I love this book
By D in CA
It has been a few years since I read this, but it still sticks out in my mind for its powerful capacity to evoke a meditative mind. Each page is dripping with Dharma, chock full of the oral advice of the Kadam masters on all aspects of the path. You could take this text into retreat with you for years and never get to the end of its gifts. Read it and live it, and the world will be a better place!

Great Translation and Analyses for Full Understanding
By Daruma
This is a good translation and commentary on a very important work of Tibetan Buddhism. Each verse is translated from the Tibetan, and then commentaries from great Buddhist teachers and scholars are given. Comments from Santideva, Chokyi Dragpa, Jatala Stories, Atisa, and many others will help you understand the full meaning of these very compact, dense, and highly poetic verses.

Alien Zone: Cultural Theory and Contemporary Science Fiction Cinema (Probability; 36)From Brand: Verso

This is especially true of the science fiction film—a genre as old as cinema itself—which has rarely received the serious attention devoted to such genres as the western, the film noir and recently, under the aegis of feminist film theory, the so-called “woman’s film.” Alien Zone aims to bring science fiction cinema fully into the ambit of cultural theory in general and of film theory in particular.

The essays in this book—some newly written, others gathered from scattered sources—look at the ways in which contemporary science fiction films draw on, rework, and transform established themes and conventions of the genre: the mise-en-scene of future worlds; the myth of masculine mastery of nature; power and authority and their relation to technology. This material is ordered and contextualized by the editor with a view to exploring how science fiction cinema has been approached critically and theoretically by commentators on the genre: as a mirror of society, as bearing or producing ideology; as caught up in an intertext of media productions, or as expressing unconscious desires.

Contributors include Giuliana Bruno, Scott Bukatman, Thomas B. Byers, Barbara Creed, Anne Cranny-Francis, Daniel Dervin, H. Bruce Franklin, James H. Kavanagh, Douglas Kelner, Steve Neale, Judith Newton, Constance Penley, Hugh Ruppersberg, Michael Ryan, Vivian Sobchack, Michael Stern, J. P. Telotte, and Paul Virilio.

Mostly scholarly, still interesting.
By PolarisDiB
To be perfectly honest, it's quite unlikely many people will be buying this book as anything else than a textbook for a science fiction literature or science fiction film class. That said, it's still a very interesting read on the most part.

A collection of semiotic essays on various Science Fiction texts and their discursive meanings, this book is both informative and useful for taking science fiction a bit further. If you know neither what semiotic or discursive means, don't even bother. Even the most poorly written essays in this collection use pretty thick grammar to present their theses.

Despite their largely academic conceit, this book is not saved from the occassional bad essay. The last one in particular, "Feminist Futures, A Generic Study" was an exercise in redundancy and circular reasoning. Thus, for the oddball exhibitionist out there, don't expect to place this book on your shelf and use it to seem smarter or anything. It definitely is a book that deserves a read-through in order to develop some ideas. It's a resource material, not a literary piece.

THE “SECRET” SERIES
By Phillip Taylor MBE
THE “SECRET” SERIES

THEY ARE THE BEST FOR A FIRST READ!

Enid’s early works include the ‘Secret’ books about Peggy, Mike, Nora and Jack. They were the catalyst which encouraged me to start reading more than 50 years ago. Thank you, Enid.

The BBC, many public libraries, local authorities and alleged educational experts have been completely wrong about the worth of the Blyton works. I can remember having substantial difficulty obtaining the original versions of the books. Quite a few shops would not stock them then but they were wonderful stories for teenagers! The tales are great to read for their simplicity and straightforwardness.

When one did find copies of the book they were quite expensive all those years ago but great to own. I loved the physical appearance of the books as well which I treasured as a youngster with the way in which the books were produced then making them somehow much easier to read.

It’s a delight to read these stories of adventure again in middle age although recent editing has diminished some of the memories I have of the original editions and words used then (but I am now getting old).

Never mind… these books remain one of my best friends for life: they began my own reading adventure so do read these special adventures for yourselves.

Eihei Dogen: Mystical Realist, by Hee-Jin Kim

Eihei Dogen, the founder of the Japanese branch of the Soto Zen Buddhist school, is considered one of the world's most remarkable religious philosophers. Eihei Dogen: Mystical Realist is a comprehensive introduction to the genius of this brilliant thinker. This thirteenth-century figure has much to teach us all and the questions that drove him have always been at the heart of Buddhist practice.

At the age of seven, in 1207, Dogen lost his mother, who at her death earnestly asked him to become a monastic to seek the truth of Buddhism. We are told that in the midst of profound grief, Dogen experienced the impermanence of all things as he watched the incense smoke ascending at his mother's funeral service. This left an indelible impression upon the young Dogen; later, he would emphasize time and again the intimate relationship between the desire for enlightenment and the awareness of impermanence. His way of life would not be a sentimental flight from, but a compassionate understanding of, the intolerable reality of existence.

At age 13, Dogen received ordination at Mt. Hiei. And yet, a question arose: "As I study both the exoteric and the esoteric schools of Buddhism, they maintain that human beings are endowed with Dharma-nature by birth. If this is the case, why did the buddhas of all ages - undoubtedly in possession of enlightenment - find it necessary to seek enlightenment and engage in spiritual practice?" When it became clear that no one on Mt. Hiei could give a satisfactory answer to this spiritual problem, he sought elsewhere, eventually making the treacherous journey to China. This was the true beginning of a life of relentless questioning, practice, and teaching - an immensely inspiring contribution to the Buddhadharma.

As you might imagine, a book as ambitious as Eihei Dogen: Mystical Realist has to be both academically rigorous and eminently readable to succeed. Professor Hee-Jim Kim's work is indeed both.

Review
"This book is an excellent comprehensive introduction to Dogen's massive corpus of intricate writings as well as to his elegantly simple yet profound practice. It stands as the best overall general introduction to Dogen's teaching." (From the new foreword by Taigen Dan Leighton)

"This book's re-issue represents an important moment in the history of Dogen studies. Kim's work still stands out for the depth and clarity of its elucidation of Dogen as a religious thinker and practitioner." (Mark Unno, Editorial Board, Journal of Religious Ethics, and author of Shingon Refractions)

"Down through the years and through its earlier editions, it was always to Dr. Kim's book that I turned first in any matter relating to Dogen. Now from his retirement from a fine academic career, we have the fruit of his lifetime of research and meditation. I am very grateful." (Robert Aitken, author of Taking the Path of Zen and The Morning Star: New and Selected Zen Writings)

"Dogen is no easy read--fortunately Kim's book, itself a polished gem, expertly guides a reader into what is simultaneously rich and playful in Dogen's Buddhist vision." (William R. LaFleur, author of Awesome Nightfall: The Life, Times, and Poetry of Saigyo)

"A essential volume in any Dogen library." (Zoketsu Norman Fischer, former abbot, San Francisco Zen Center, and author of Taking Our Places: The Buddhist Path to Truly Growing Up)

"Kim's work remains a beacon of scholarship into the mind of one of the most remarkable spiritual giants in the history of Zen." (John Daido Loori, abbot of Zen Mountain Monastery)

"Eihei Dogen: Mystical Realist remains a valuable contribution to all of modern Zen commentary." (SirReadALot.org)

An engaging study
By Hakuyu
Kim's work has won the praise of many, not least Robert Aitken Roshi, an American with a lifetime's experience of Zen training. In his foreword to the third edition, Aitken Roshi stated:

"this revised edition . . .now includes many new translations and studies of Dogen, and thus it is most welcome. Dogen wrote at the outermost edge of human communication, touching with every sentence such mysteries as self and other, self and non-self, meditation and realization, the temporal and the timeless, forms and the void.@He wrote of the attitude necessary for understanding, of the practice required. . .of the various insights that emerge, and of the many pitfalls. He did not generally write for beginners - most of his points require very careful study and a few of them elude almost everybody. These challenges are compounded by his creative use of the Japanese language. It has been said that he wrote in "Dogenese," for he made verbs of nouns, nouns of verbs, created new metaphors, and manipulated old sayings to present his particular understanding. . . "

Prof. Kim's study has been based on a careful reading of Dogen's chosen idioms. He has endeavoured to amplify Dogen's understanding of 'do-ri' - or 'reason of the way.' Kim is keen to show that Dogen's use of Zen language is not merely provisional or instrumental, but embodies a 'realisational' dimension. This is exemplified in the notion of the 'genjo-koan' or koan realised in the present, which is to say, actualised in every day activity. In this way, Kim endeavours to show that Dogen's Zen culminates in ' the great way of total exertion' (gujin no daido) or the total actualisation of practice as realization. Kim is a foremost interpreter of Dogen's thought - and, as such, this book deserves a place in every Buddhist library. My only reservation about this study, is that it might have made better sense of the question of how the so-called 'instrumentalist' aspect of koan practice relates to the 'realizational' aspect. Quite rightly, Kim is at pains to point out that accounts of Zen which stress the 'instrumentalist' view of koan practice - and that alone, are one sided, and he has therefore endeavoured to illustrate a different perspective. However, without reflection, we might be left to conclude that Rinzai Zen favours the 'instrumentalist' view - and Soto, the 'realizational' view. Kim knows better, and indeed, in places (p. 165), he has cited certain remarks from Dogen, which concede that the term 'genjo-koan' originated with Engo - a Rinzai master of the Sung, evidently meaning that Rinzai practitioners have appreciated the 'realizational' aspect. As such, the critical references to (Dai-e) Ta-hui which appear elsewhere in the book, seem strangely out of tenor with this fact. Yuan-wu (Engo) was Ta-hui's teacher, and the latter must surely have known of his master's references to the genjo-koan. Conversely, much as we might identify Dogen's Zen with 'shikantaza' (just-sitting), playing down the instrumentalist approach, Dogen also had his experience of 'casting off mind and body' (shinjindatsuraku) - a breakthrough experience more or less akin to that realised by Rinzai followers. Perhaps Prof. Kim will enlighten us on this unresolved problem, at some future point.

The Most Essential Work on Dogen Available in English
By Ted Biringer
If I had to choose between Hee-Jin Kim's Eihei Dogen: Mystical Realist and all the other books on Dogen Zenji, author of Zen masterpiece Shobogenzo, I would not need to ponder--I would choose Mystical Realist.

The only other books in English that come close to Mystical Realist in their importance for understanding and appreciating Dogen and his writings are Hee-Jin Kim's two other masterful explorations of this seminal thirteenth century Zen master. These are, Dr. Kim's most recent book Dogen on Meditation and Thinking: His View on Zen, and his 1985 publication, Flowers of Emptiness: Selections From Dogen's Shobogenzo.

Ever since its original publication in 1975 (then titled: Dogen Kigen--Mystical Realist) Professor Kim's Eihei Dogen: Mystical Realist has remained at the top of the list as the definitive English language book on the founder of Soto Zen in Japan and his works. This work has undergone several revisions (the latest in 2004) that have allowed Hee-Jin Kim to improve upon his original message. These revisions have allowed Kim to expand upon his ideas as they have been refined through the years, as well as to make corrections to the translations and keep the book current with ongoing scholarship.

While the revisions have improved the overall flow of his message, and improved the book's readability, its central teachings have stood firmly throughout. The insight that Kim offered us on Eihei Dogen and his work has remained essential unchanged. Like Master Dogen's own work, Kim's Mystical Realist is as vital and lively today as it was when it was originally published. This book is truly an extraordinary achievement, and as of all Kim's work, an essential text for students, not only of Dogen, or even Zen, but for anyone interested in exploring the human condition and its potential for actualization.

Outstanding on Zen and Dogen
By Kimball
This is an outstanding text that debunks many of the new-age and Californiacted versions of Zen - not to mention the plethora of internet sites claiming expertise on the subject - particularly the ant-intellectual and intuition-only tendencies that are so common among modern students. Amazon.com Review
The jolt of confidence you get when discussing a day's performance with a seasoned veteran can take any activity to a higher level. In his concise and informative Zen Meditation in Plain English, meditation veteran John Daishin Buksbazen gives detailed directions for each step of Zen-style meditation, from getting into the different postures and developing breath concentration, all the way up to intensive training periods. With only one short chapter on what the mind should be doing while "sitting" (as they say in Zen), his focus is on getting the fundamentals right. He also offers a rare introduction to the importance and mechanics of group practice and a well-selected "Frequently Asked Questions" section at the end. While Buksbazen repeatedly says that there is no substitute for a good teacher, until you find one, Zen Meditation in Plain English will do nicely. --Brian Bruya

From Publishers Weekly
Buksbazen, a psychotherapist who was ordained a Zen priest in 1968 and is affiliated with the Zen Center of Los Angeles, offers practical and down-to-earth advice about the specifics of Zen meditation. He begins by encouraging readers to get involved with meditation and not just read books about Buddhism: "After all, cookbooks are fun to read, but... they are most helpful to somebody who is actually involved in cooking." The bulk of this short primer is concerned with introducing the basics of zazen, or seated meditation: how to position the body, particularly the legs; how and when to breathe; what to think about. Helpful diagrams illustrate the full lotus, Burmese, kneeling (seiza) and other positions. Buksbazen even provides a "zazen checklist" to help beginners remember all of the steps involved in zazen, which as he notes is more difficult than it appears. What distinguishes this book from any number of Zen self-help books is its final section, which focuses on community. Arguing that "true Zen practice cannot be fully experienced in all its diversity and richness by just one person alone," Buksbazen builds a strong case for the powerful effect of being involved with a community of other practitioners. He follows this ideological argument with concrete information about group practice, including meditation retreats and other intensive training periods. In all, this is a fine introduction to Zen meditation practice, grounded in tradition yet adapted to contemporary life.

"John Buksbazen's book is an authentic presentation of a universal and timeless teaching, particularly valuable because of the practical clarity and warmth of its style." (Dennis Gempo Merzel Roshi, author of The Eye that Never Sleeps, Abbot of Kanzeon Zen Center)

"Here is a lucid guide to the first step of any serious spiritual journey. All of the usual fat that accompanies works of this type has been trimmed away, leaving the bones and marrow--the essentials that any new practitioner needs to know to enter the way." (John Daido Loori, Roshi, Abbot of Zen Mountain Monastery)

"An engaging introduction to bringing Zen meditation to a contemporary lifestyle. Comprehensive and step-by-step, the book also puts this practice into its proper historic and theological place. Thus, the book offers twin streams of thought that will enchant those seeking physical ease and those who wish to understand the basic foundations of the Zen Buddhist way. Buksbazen spices his book with light humor, recognizing questions and concerns that some people may not feel comfortable openly addressing (falling asleep, getting 'addicted' to meditation) and noting ways the Zen mind can put oomph into even boring chores. Buksbazen never hard-sells his faith to the reader but rather outlines its basic tenets and allows the reader to respond based on individual disposition." (New York Resident)

"Clear, simple and well grounded in years of experience, Daishin's book is a real gift to anyone interested in Zen practice." (Bernie Glassman, founder of the Zen Peacemaker's Order)

"John Daishin Buksbazen has brought the practice of Zen home to us all. It is as simple as stretching exercises, as intimate as counting the breaths, as uncomplicated as accepting one's self, as ordinary as enjoying one's friends." (Robert Aitken, author of Gateless Gate)

A Zen Tool Kit
By Daniel J Buckley
This book has been a blessing for me. My organization provides a prison outreach program for inmates, who want to learn meditation, and this is the guide we will be putting in their hands. Daishin has provided the tools that any person, beginner or experienced practioner can use. His list of Frequently Asked Questions addresses those points that some people may feel shy in asking and his illustrations of sitting positions and exercises are most useful When you read the book, you feel he is talking directly to you. His use of quotes from his teacher, the late Maezumi Roshi, brings a deeper understanding of what Zen and the practice of meditation is all about. If you could only choose one book on meditation, I would advise you to give this one serious consideration.

A straightforward introduction to Zen meditation
By A Customer
This book does an admirable job of explaining the fundamentals of Zen meditation. There are many, many good books out now that include some discussion of meditation technique, but usually that's as a part of a larger discussion of Buddhism and Buddhist thought, and the mechanics of meditation often get inadequate attention. With this book, the reader will get a solid introduction to meditation, sufficient to get actual practice off to a good start. I would not be surprised if it becomes a classic in the field. Very well done.

Zen Meditation in Plain English
By Lim Yen Yong
It is practical guide for beginners who are interested in

meditation. It shows the precise way to sit. The supplementary exercises written in the appendices are indeed very useful. It limbers up and allows one to sit longer. Secondly, it is written in simple English. Anyone who does not have a glossary of Buddhist Terminology can understand. Thirdly, it teaches one to be aware and mindful - sitting is just sitting; be it a "good" or "hard" sitting.

The Guns of Easter, by Gerard Whelan

It is 1916 and Europe is at war. From the poverty of the Dublin slums twelve-year-old Jimmy Conway sees it all as glorious, and loves the British Army for which his father is fighting. But when war comes to his own streets Jimmy's loyalties are divided. The rebels occupy the General Post Office and other parts of the city, and Jimmy's uncle is among them. Dublin's streets are destroyed, business comes to a halt. In an attempt to find food for his family, Jimmy crosses the city, avoiding the shooting, weaving through the army patrols, hoping to make it home before curfew. But his quest is not easy and danger threatens at every corner.

Gr. 6-10. Growing up in the early twentieth century, 12-year-old Jimmy Conway feels removed from the direct consequences of war in Ireland even though his father is a soldier. For Jimmy, the conflict seems to be a complicated adult struggle that has little to do with his life in the slums of Dublin. However, when violence erupts literally down the street, his views about war are shaken, and he learns firsthand about treachery when he must risk his life to find food for his family. Whelan immerses readers in a harsh, yet poignant, journey that finds Jimmy learning much about the Irish people, his family, and most important, himself. The exciting plot moves effortlessly, enhanced by plenty of details to add character depth and historical context, and Whelan wisely avoids both extreme tragedy and overzealous triumph. The result is a fine adventure, with some realistic, genuinely heart-tugging twists. Roger Leslie

Brilliant Irish historical novel
By A Customer
This is an adventure story located in the turmoil of Dublin during the 1916 rebellion. As well as being a gripping adventure, it's a great introduction to modern Irish history.
I've recommended it to older friends as well as younger ones and most of them have read it at one sitting.
The hero of the novel spends Easter week dodging the firefights and explosions which are racking Irelands capital.
Through his travels the book introduces us to a varied cast of characters on both sides of the Irish struggle. As well as the British soldiers there are the various Irish groups that came together to oppose them: the working men of the Citizens army, the poets and writers of the Irish volunteers and the ordinary citizens of Dublin.
The young boys life is often in danger, but through his eyes we are privileged to see the sacrifice and determination which is bringing Ireland it's freedom.
While the hero of the novel is dodging the raking fire of machine guns and the heavy thud of Mauser bullets we're given a fascinating picture of Dublin and it's inhabitants.
One of the things I most enjoyed about this book was it's attention to detail and it's great period accuracy. But after reading it I also understood more fully the political events that are happening in Ireland now.

Very exciting and a mixture of sad and hopeful
By A Customer
I read this book after Gerard Whelan came to our school and explained why he wrote it. He said that a lot of the problems in Ireland today are caused by people getting upset about what they think happened in history and he wanted to find out what really happened. This is a really exciting story about children's adventures during the Easter Rising and at the end you realise it isn't about baddies and goodies but about real mixed up people. I am 13 and I think anyone who enjoys adventure stories would enjoy this one.

I read this with my 11 year old. The story is written from a young boys perspective of the Easter Rising. I would recommend this book for anyone who has a preteen curious about Ireland's revolution.

The Book of Mu: Essential Writings on Zen's Most Important KoanFrom Ford, James Ishmael (EDT)/ Blacker, Melissa Myozen (EDT)/ Tarrant, J

The word "mu" is one ancient Zen teacher's response to the earnest question of whether even a dog has "buddha nature". Discovering for ourselves the meaning of the master's response is the urgent work of each of us who yearns to be free and at peace. "Practicing Mu" is synonymous with practicing Zen, "sitting with Mu" is an apt description for all Zen meditation, and it is said that all the thousands and thousands of koans in the Zen tradition are just further elaborations of Mu.

This watershed volume brings together over forty teachers, ancient and modern masters from across centuries and schools, to illuminate and clarify the essential matter: the question of how to be most truly ourselves.

Includes writings from: Dogen, Hakuin, Dahui, Thich Thien-An Zenkei Shibayama, Seung Sahn, Taizan Maezumi, Sheng Yen Philip Kapleau, Robert Aitken, Jan Chozen Bays, Shodo Harada Grace Schireson, John Daido Loori, John Tarrant Barry Magid, Joan Sutherland, and many more!

Instant classic
By Adam Kō Shin Tebbe
A monumental new book edited by James Ishmael Ford and Melissa Myozen Blacker has hit bookshelves today (about a month early!)--The Book of Mu: Essential Writings on Zen's Most Important Koan. Ford and Blacker are both Zen teachers in the American Zen community representing the Boundless Way Zen school. The work is being presented as part of the Essential Writings of Zen series put out by Wisdom Publications, the other two being The Art of Just Sitting and Sitting with Koans. Although this is the third installment in the series, Wisdom recommends this as the place to start. You'll easily be forgiven if you think that the title is a little bit funny - referring to the Mu koan as "Zen's most important koan." It's a bit paradoxical, really. Obviously, this is in reference to the koan's importance and widespread usage. Virtually anyone who has ever undertaken koan study with a teacher has encountered this particular koan along their way.

The `mu' koan is well-known to koan-introspection schools of Zen, appearing as the first case of the Mumonkan. In the Rinzai-shu of Japan, it is often the first koan a new student will be tasked with to work on. The koan goes by many names, including Zhaozhou's Dog, the Mu koan, the Wu koan, the No koan, or even just Mu. It goes essentially as follows:

A monk once asked Master Zhaozhou if a dog has the Buddha Nature.

Master Zhaozhou replied, "Mu."

The Book of Mu is packed with commentaries on the Mu koan from ancient and modern Zen teachers, from Dogen Zenji to Susan Murphy (and everyone else in between). A few controversial figures appear within the pages of this book, such as Eido Tai Shimano. As I understand it, Shimano was included in part because of his willingness to translate from the Japanese for some of the commentaries in this compendium. Personally, I dig the diversity contained in this book. See the end of this review for a list of everyone who appears in this book with their commentaries.

In a word, this book is exhaustive. That is to its credit and is not a fault. The approach taken in this book is much like the approach Sweeping Zen strives to accomplish in dealing with the various schools and traditions within our Zen communities. There is cause for concern I suppose, however, that in reading a book some may read for "the" answer. As Zen teacher Ruben Habito said during his interview here at Sweeping Zen, a teacher also appearing in this book, "I hope they don't read it trying to get the answer! That would be a whole misleading notion that they can get the answer by reading what people say about it."

So, kudos to Wisdom Publications, James Ishmael Ford, Melissa Myozen Blacker, and the many other teachers and translators who appear in this collection for creating such a wonderful resource. This book is sure to go classic, as has already been predicted. Highly recommended.

A Guide Through the Forrest
By Daniel M. Kaplan
When I heard that James Ishmael Ford, Roshi and Melissa Myozen Blacker, Roshi were coming out with an edited book on Mu, I hoped for something really useful, unlike most books on zen. When I read The Book of Mu, I was not disappointed. From the inviting forward by John Tarrant, Roshi, to the various vantage points on Mu practice, I found myself inspired to practice, and coming home to Mu, No. I find I still rely on rules and guideways, and I notice that.I also notice how dead that feels sometimes and how unhelpful in the fullness of my life. I also notice that when I engage with Mu, with Chao Chou's NO, I can rest in finding my way, step by step, and keeping company with my koan. As a zen student of nearly 40 years, I can recommend this book, on this practice, on this koan as something every koan student might want to take a look at. The articles are inspiring, clarifying, and invitations to take up this one word, this one life and to discover the way set up as a companion through the thicket and clearing. This volume includes many articles by some of today's most wonderful women teachers, such as Joan Sutherland, Susan Murphy, Melissa Myozen Blacker, and several others. It also includes some classic commentaries and writings on Chao Chou's NO by some of our great ancestors on the Path, such as Dahui Zonggao, Hakuin Ekaku, and Eihei Dogen.
If you are looking for the answer to this koan, you won't find it in this book. At least I didn't. If there IS a response to this koan, I know I need look no further away than what is true and real in my life, really true and real. I find that when I do, the thickets become permeable and I don't feel stuck where I stand. This volume is a treasure. This furry bag of skin is a treasure. This life is a treasure. Thank you, James and Melissa, for inviting the reader of this volume into a world of inspiring writing and a call to practice.

Excellent introspection
By jim botta
The first few chapters by Japanese writers were not useful as they just repeated what was in the Koan and did not explain the references. You can read one or two of them but skip to the American reviews which give a more detailed explanation of the the ancient references and how these impact a contemporary practitioner.
