From School Library Journal
As with his other giddy retellings of familiar stories, Ross preserves the bare bones of the story line but embellishes it with imaginative details. A father who shouts "Sweetie-pies!" when reunited with his children, a witch who calls Gretel a "silly sausage," and a money-loving swan are among Ross' distinctive characters. The language makes this a delightful read-aloud, particularly for children who already know the traditional story. The rosy-cheeked, snub-nosed children and sharp-featured gray villains will be familiar to Ross' fans. Here he also uses line to create texture and a sense of grim darkness, a technique he has not used in his previous works. Children will enjoy the cameo appearances of cats and mice that indicate other stories are going on. The book is a good contrast to other less traditional versions, such as Anthony Browne's Hansel and Gretel (Knopf, 1988). --Barbara Chatton, College of Education, University of Wyoming, Laramie

These two volumes present a conspectus of current research on the history and culture of early medieval Spain and Portugal, from the time of the Arab conquest in 711 up to the fall of the caliphate. They trace the impact of Islamisation on the pre-existing Roman and Visigothic political and social structures, the continuing interaction between Christian and Muslim, and describe the particular development and characteristics of Muslim Spain- al-Andalus. Together, they comprise 38 articles, of which 32 have been translated into English specially for this publication. The first volume focuses on political and social history, and looks in detail at settlement patterns and urbanisation; the second examines questions of language and covers the brilliant cultural and intellectual history of the period.

Insights into Muslim Spain
By Robert Lebling
These are volumes 46 and 47 in the impressive Variorum collection, "The Formation of the Classical Islamic World," under the general editorship of Lawrence I. Conrad. Modern Spain is showing a growing interest in its rich Islamic heritage, and this work certainly reflects that trend.

Part 1, Volume 46, is dominated by quality English translations of the latest Spanish scholarship on history and society in Muslim Spain.

Leopoldo Torres Balbás provides a useful historical catalogue of 22 cities founded by Muslims in al-Andalus, from Badajoz to Calatayud to Murcia to Madrid to Gibraltar. María Luisa Ávila describes the social structure of the Andalusian family and discusses the role of women in Muslim Spain. Miguel Cruz Hernández, in a chapter from an upcoming book on Islam in Spain, discusses the overall social structure of early al-Andalus, and the evolving relationships among Arabs, Berbers, Muwallads (converts to Islam), Mozarabs (Arabized Christians) and Jews.

For dessert, non-Spaniard Heinz Halm gives a new historical and linguistic explanation for the origin of the word "al-Andalus" - no, it's not derived from "Vandals," he says, but comes instead from a common real-estate term that the Arabs took over from the Goths, landahlauts (land lot).

Part 2, Volume 47, is packed with new perspectives from Spanish and other scholars on the diverse achievements of civilization in Muslim Spain. For those interested in language, literature, theology, art, architecture, astronomy, mathematics, medicine, pharmacology - this is the place to delve.

Roger Wright explores the disappearance of written popular Latin, or Ladino, among Andalusian Christians, who kept their spoken Romance language but found that Arabic script fully met their literary needs. Manuel Ocaña Jiménez offers a new look at the origins of the Great Mosque of Cordoba, and in the process shows that Muslims took over Gothic Cordoba not by violence but through negotiated peace treaty and at the urging of the local Jewish community.

Anchoring the Exact and Natural Sciences section are informative articles examining Arab, Indian and Greek influences on astronomy in al-Andalus. Particularly fascinating is Paul Kunitsch's translation of "The Book on the Stars" by Andalusian polymath Ibn Habib, relaying early Arab star knowledge originally compiled by the founder of Islam's Maliki juridical school, Malik ibn Anas of al-Madinah.

Like a Waking Dream: The Autobiography of Geshe Lhundub Sopa, by Geshe Lhundub Sopa

Among the generation of elder Tibetan lamas who brought Tibetan Buddhism west in the latter half of the twentieth century, perhaps none has had a greater impact on the academic study of Buddhism than Geshe Lhundub Sopa. He has striven to preserve Tibetan religious culture through tireless work as a professor and religious figure, establishing a functioning Buddhist monastery in the West, organizing the Dalai Lama's visits to the U.S., and offering countless teachings across the country. But prior to his thirty-year career in the first ever academic Buddhist studies program in the United States - a position in which he oversaw the training of many among the seminal generation of American Buddhist studies scholars - Geshe Sopa was the son of peasant farmers, a novice monk in a rural monastery, a virtuoso scholar-monk at one of the prestigious central monasteries in Lhasa, and a survivor of the Tibetan uprising and perilous flight into exile in 1959.

In Like a Waking Dream, Geshe Sopa frankly and observantly reflects on how his life in Tibet - a monastic life of yogic simplicity - shaped and prepared him for the unexpected. His is a tale of an exemplary life dedicated to learning, spiritual cultivation, and the service of others from one of the greatest living masters of Tibetan Buddhism.

Review
"Like a Waking Dream is a fascinating memoir of a well-lived life, the story of a poor Tibetan boy who grew up to become one of the most eminent Buddhist scholars of his time, and in exile, a major influence on the study of Tibetan Buddhism in America. The bulk of the book is devoted to Geshe Sopa's experiences as a young scholar-monk in Tibet, and as such is an invaluable historical record of the everyday details of a way of life now vanished. Geshe-la recounts his story, sensitively edited by Paul Donnelly, with the simplicity, insight, and sympathy for human foibles that characterize this great teacher. Anyone with an interest in Tibetan culture and religion will relish this wonderful account." (Michael Sweet and Leonard Zwilling, authors of Mission to Tibet)

"Geshe Sopa is one of the greatest living Buddhist masters of his generation. A consummate scholar and respected university professor, his impact on the establishment of Buddhism (and Buddhist Studies) in the United States cannot be overestimated. This marvelous life story, rich in detail and told in his own words, will captivate the hearts and minds of anyone who reads it." (Jose Ignacio Cabezón, Dalai Lama Professor and Chair of the Religious Studies Department, UC Santa Barbara)

"Spanning from the Tibetan Himalayas to the rolling hills of Wisconsin, the story of how Geshe Sopa, a Buddhist monk revered and respected worldwide for his insightful scholarship and tireless teaching, came to be who he is today is filled with warmth, compassion, and joy. When I first met Geshe Sopa as a nineteen-year-old college student in the 1960s, little did I know that I was in the presence of a great Tibetan Buddhist master. His magnificent charm and insightfulness have profoundly affected my life and will surely affect yours too. For anyone interested in how such a master is made and how to live an exemplary life with grace and wisdom, this book is a must read." (Zorba Paster, host of PRI's On Your Health and author of The Longevity Code: Your Prescription for a Longer, Sweeter Life)

"Geshe Sopa's life story is central to the story of Tibetan Buddhism in the West. In shaping generations of leading American scholars of Tibet, he became renowned not just for teaching Buddhist ideas and ideals, but for making them real by personally embodying them." (John Makransky, Associate Professor of Buddhism, Boston College and author of Awakening through Love)

About the Author
Born in the Tsang region of Tibet in 1923, Geshe Lhundub Sopa is both a spiritual master and a respected academic. He rose from a humble background to complete his geshe studies at Sera Je Monastic University in Lhasa with highest honors and was privileged to serve as a debate opponent for the Dalai Lama's own geshe examination in 1959. He moved to New Jersey in the United States in 1963 and in 1967 began teaching in the Buddhist Studies Program at University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he is now professor emeritus. In 1975, he founded the Deer Park Buddhist Center in Oregon, Wisconsin, site of the Dalai Lama's first Kalachakra initiation granted in the West. He is the author of several books in English, including the five-volume comprehensive teaching, Steps on the Path to Englightenment.

In 1989, Paul Donnelly entered the PhD program in Buddhist Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He earned his doctorate in 1997 and is now an associate professor and director of the Religious Studies program at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff.

Tenzin Gyatso, the Fourteenth Dalai Lama, is the spiritual leader of the Tibetan people. He frequently describes himself as a simple Buddhist monk. Born in northeastern Tibet in 1935, he was as a toddler recognized as the incarnation of the Thirteenth Dalai Lama and brought to Tibet's capital, Lhasa. In 1950, Mao Zedong's Communist forces made their first incursions into eastern Tibet, shortly after which the young Dalai Lama assumed the political leadership of his country. He passed his scholastic examinations with honors at the Great Prayer Festival in Lhasa in 1959, the same year Chinese forces occupied the city, forcing His Holiness to escape to India. There he set up the Tibetan government-in-exile in Dharamsala, working to secure the welfare of the more than 100,000 Tibetan exiles and prevent the destruction of Tibetan culture. In his capacity as a spiritual and political leader, he has traveled to more than sixty-two countries on six continents and met with presidents, popes, and leading scientists to foster dialogue and create a better world. In recognition of his tireless work for the nonviolent liberation of Tibet, the Dalai Lama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989. In 2012, he relinquished political authority in his exile government and turned it over to democratically elected representatives.

His Holiness frequently states that his life is guided by three major commitments: the promotion of basic human values or secular ethics in the interest of human happiness, the fostering of interreligious harmony, and securing the welfare of the Tibetan people, focusing on the survival of their identity, culture, and religion. As a superior scholar trained in the classical texts of the Nalanda tradition of Indian Buddhism, he is able to distill the central tenets of Buddhist philosophy in clear and inspiring language, his gift for pedagogy imbued with his infectious joy. Connecting scientists with Buddhist scholars, he helps unite contemplative and modern modes of investigation, bringing ancient tools and insights to bear on the acute problems facing the contemporary world. His efforts to foster dialogue among leaders of the world's faiths envision a future where people of different beliefs can share the planet in harmony. Wisdom Publications is proud to be the premier publisher of the Dalai Lama's more serious and in-depth works.

Gesha Sopa in Madison
By Allyn Roberts
I have been a friend of Gesha Sopa, and some o f his old students from Tibet, for the past 40 years. So of course I loved this book; the wonderful and accurate descriptioin of the life of a "high lama" loved and well knlown throughout the buddhist world. Many years ago when I visited with the Dalai Lama, the first question he had of me was: "how is Gesha Sopa"? I told him that Gesha Sopa had learned to drive and that sometimes I had the impression that he was in a meditative state when driving. His holliness laughed profusely and stated:" when you return to Amerfica and see Gesha Sopa, tell him that meditation is very good, and driving is very good, but meditation and driving at same time----not good." Allyn F. Roberts, Ph.D.

Life of an extraordinary teacher, in Tibet, India, and the United States
By M. J. Sweet
The book captures Geshe Sopa's precise, gentle and often humorous way of speaking; one of the greatest traditional Tibetan scholars of his generation, he was the embodiment of compassion and patience (the meaning of "Sopa"). His memoir is an important source on Gelukpa monastic life before the post1 959 Chinese destruction of traditional Tibetan life. Unlike some writers, both Tibetans and Westerners, Geshe-la does not idealize the old Tibet; he depicts its saints and spiritual values and the harmony of its medieval society, as well as the poverty he endured as the son of peasants and as a student, as contrasted with the lavish lifestyle of the nobles and wealthy corporations of incarnate lamas. He doesn't judge or criticize anyone, just shows it like it was. The book also deals with the many hardships of life in exile in India, as well as the achievements of Geshe-la's life in the U.S. as a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the founder of the Deer Park Buddhist Center and the Evam Monastery. With Geshe-la's recent passing, this book is a very precious remembrance of his life and work.

Excellent
By robert gore
I have been fortunate to be one of Geshe la's students at Deer Park. This is an astoundingly personnal recounting of his experiences as a young monk at Sera Monastery near Lhasa. Quickly recognized as one of the great scholar/teaching monks, Geshe la offers the reader a revealing overview of the inner workings of one of the major Tibetan monasteries. He tells his stories with humility and charm.

Review
"'I want to be a Zen master,' declared the 24-year-old, altruistic Irish scholar Maura O'Halloran; and these letters and journal entries chronicle her experience in pursuit of that goal from 1979 through 1982 in Japan. Her pages provide a clear window for those curious about the reality of Zen training. Profound episodes co-exist with lighter moments. Her account is all the more poignant for the fact that she met an untimely death at 27 in a bus accident in Thailand while on her way home to start a Zen center in Ireland. Her substantial gift of insight is a fine legacy." (Publishers Weekly)

"A rare and valuable window into the world of intensive Zen training as experienced by a Western woman. Maura began her Zen study in 1979 at the age of twenty-four. Westerners had done this training before, but as a Western woman, Maura was an oddity in the hyper-male world of monastic Japanese Zen. Her beautiful writing is full of unexpected phrases and word-pictures and overall, a sense of such uncloying positivity that it is a truly joyful read. Read her book and you will be astonished." (Tricycle Blog)

"Some of the most important lessons I've learned about Buddhism haven't come from the Dalai Lama or Thich Nhat Hanh. Rather, they came from Maura O'Halloran. [Pure Heart, Enlightened Mind] brought the Buddhist experience into my mind and psyche in a way that no dharma book or doctrine ever had.... For me, Maura's book is a gift, offering guidance and inspiration. Reading about her life, I'm able to reflect more clearly on my own experience, and to glimpse what I do not yet now or understand. While other books have helped me to appreciate the concept of enlightenment, reading Maura's account of her awakening made the possibility of it much more real. I come back PH,EM often. Every time I read it I break down into heaving sobs, unable to finish. To this day, I'm unable to explain why I'm moved so deeply." (Sumi Loundon, editor of Blue Jean Buddha, in Buddhadharma)

"A fascinating portrait of an apprentice sage. The book unfolds as a grand adventure." (New York Times Book Review)

"Among the many titles recounting personal experiences in Buddhist schools, O'Halloran's stands out as particularly clear and moving and unique: she was the first of few Western women allowed to practice in a traditional Japanese Zen monastery." (Library Journal)

"'Maura-san," or 'Soshin'--celebrated during her lifetime in the Japanese media as an anomaly of anomalies, a female Irish Zen monk--has come to be regarded as a Buddhist bodhisattva or saint of compassion. [Pure Heart, Enlightened Mind is] a remarkable record of a life fully lived, a unique and inspiring and even heartbreaking book. [...] Like Virginia Woolf in her diaries or Elizabeth Bishop in her letters, Maura O'Halloran appears on the page singular and whole. So this is a person! She is a Zen monk, yes, but she is also a splendidly educated Irish-American from a large and loving family, intellectually ambitious, attractive and attracted to men of all sorts, hungry for the world's goods. These aspects of herself fulfill one another rather than cancel each other out. While it is called Pure Heart, Enlightened Mind, the book is full of Maura's soul. [...] the journal itself is personal, sometimes abstruse, but rarely myopic; as a writer, Maura O'Halloran can't help but communicate. It is complemented perfectly by the letters to her family interspersed throughout. In them she is unusually confident and clear-headed about her search for enlightenment. She makes no apologies, gives no defenses. [...] How sad I felt as I finished this book, which I will read again: sad that Maura O'Halloran didn't survive to return and enrich our culture, and sad that she had to go away from us in the first place." (Commonwealth)

"The writings contain insightful observations of Japanese family life, particularly of the Zen master and his family. A book that will appeal to YAs interested in religion, contemplation, and/or interaction with other cultures. The tone is light, and there is not much doctrinal explanation. A quiet, relaxing read." (School Library Journal)

"Many have gone to the East in search of enlightenment but none has told the story as vividly and honestly as Maura O'Halloran. Her tragic death was a great loss but she has left us the legacy of this marvelous book." (Melvin McLeod, Editor-in-chief of Shambhala Sun and Buddhadharma)

"The sincerity of Maura's journals and the difficulty of her journey place in sharp contrast contemporary notions of Zen in ten easy audio-tapes." (Holy Cross Magazine)

"A beautiful book which presents Maura's diaries and journals during her time in Japan. It is a wonderful tribute to Maura. I felt a bond with Maura reading the book, and wrote the song, 'Soshin'." (Musician Luka Bloom)

About the Author
In 1979 Maura O'Halloran left a waitressing job in Boston and traveled to Japan, only to find herself studying Zen at an old temple tucked into a Tokyo backstreet. There, and in the remote countryside of northern Japan, Maura began a compelling journey into the depths of her own heart and mind. Her journals and letters home reveal the gentle humor, compassion, and profound wisdom won only by intense hardship. Insightful and absorbing, Pure Heart, Enlightened Mind offers an unmediated glimpse into her endless commitment to awakening. Published nearly twenty-five years after Maura's tragic death, this commemorative edition includes her previously unpublished letters and unfinished novel, adding new insight and rich detail to what is already one of the most-loved dharma books of all time.

Simply the best!
By Mr. Peter M. Bradley
This is one of the most profound books I have ever had the privilege of coming across and to have read. Never has a book touched me so deeply. It shows the journey to enlightenment. It shows how we can reach enlightenment in the everyday tasks we perform. However, this book also chronicles the severe austerities taken along the way. Many times I was moved to tears, joy, deep love and sadness while reading this book. Something about the powerful experiences the writer had tangibly comes across whilst reading. You can almost experience the events that happened to her. She never slept lying down for three years, and only slept a few hours night whist in lotus mediation posture! What determination! It is truly remarkable. Her superhuman determination and endurance are shown constantly throughout the book and along with her complete humility the reader is left utterly shocked at this unique personality. I myself have trained for many years and can honestly say how hard it must be to even approach this level of intensity in ones training. To work up this level of momentum is indeed incredibly difficult, touched by a handful of souls. It is simply astonishing that a human can push the mind and body to these limits. In a word: Inspirational. This book is truly `Inspirational', on so many levels. She shows her humanity throughout as she approaches enlightenment. Verily this is a free soul. Then again the soul is always free, we just need to realise it.
If you had to read and assimilate the teachings of one book in your entire lifetime, I would say read this one. No other book I have come across (and I have read many, many spiritual books) have portrayed the path to perfection as this book does. Replete with lessons learnt and time well spent. If we can understand the nature of this person's journey then perhaps we can abandon all our superficial pursuits for selfish sense pleasure and aim for release. May that inscrutable power of Grace illumine the path out of pain and suffering for all beings.
Peace, Peter.

Pure Joy
By Amazon Customer
It is profoundly rare that I take the time to write or speak on any book....but know deeply, this book is special. As a Catholic, who is also experienced in Zen Buddhism, this book is a rare gift to both religions.

Pure Heart, Enlightened Mind is the story of Maura O'Halloran a profoundly intelligent young women who was raised Catholic and became a saint within the Zen Buddhist tradition. This is the story of her adventure and of her enlightenment. While the concepts may be difficult for non-Buddhists to understand, please do not let this deter you. Maura story is enchanting and deeply insightful into true spirituality ...the truth of the beauty of this life....that is so often so difficult to see.

Interesting, enlightening
By BPTL
Maura O'Halloran was a dear friend from childhood. We always knew she was special and different. Her journal entries, compiled and edited by her family, allowed a glimpse into a life of adventure, personal development, austerity, reflection, and achievement. Her story is presented in a chronological diary format, easy to read, and truly inspirational. Her writings reveal that she was indeed special, and her life a gift to all of who shared a moment in time with her.

Extremely disappointing
By bda
I found this book to be very disappointing, especially since I absolutely loved this author's other book, "The Meditator's Atlas." (Which I highly recommend.)

The meditations talked about here are the same type of pop-psychology meditations that one finds in many other books. The "visualize yourself in a room talking with someone who's hurt you" type of thing.

This book recommends using Buddhist meditation to achieve your goals: Financial goals, career goals, etc. which seems to me to be the exact opposite of what Buddhism is about.

Perhaps this is a good book on meditation, but it's not a book about Buddhist meditation, except for the fact that it uses some techniques originally rooted it Buddhism.

A workbook to help tame your ox
By Alain B. Burrese
“The Meditator's Workbook: A Journey To The Center” by Matthew Flickstein is a workbook, and to get the most out of it, one should not only read it, but do the meditations and exercises provided throughout the text. Doing this book, rather than just reading it, helps live life more fully, relieve stress and grief, and find personal inner-peace and well being. Obviously, these things can be said for meditation in general, regardless the type one practices or the source one learns from. But this book focuses on assisting one with these and more through the guided practice of meditation.

The book uses the Ten Oxherding Pictures as a base for the lessons along one's journey. As Flickstein states, “the ox symbolizes your true nature, the reality that lies beyond your conditioned and transitory existence . 'Herding the wild ox' is a metaphor for the progressive stages of realization that you will encounter during your quest for enlightenment.” I'll admit, it was this ox herding focus that drew me to purchasing the book. I've always liked these pictures, and their meaning, since learning about them from a friend as we gazed upon a series of pictures on the outside of a temple in Korea.

Using the pictures as a framework to organize the lessons, Flickstein guides the reader through a journey of finding oneself through a series of meditations. Accompanying these meditations, are questions to help you think about things that will help you find peace within yourself as well as figure out where you really want to go. There are also blank pages where you are encouraged to journal about the things you are thinking and meditating about.

There are some meditations and sections of this book that might not be as relevant to all readers, and some parts that some might not think are relevant until actually meditating on and pondering the questions the author poses. Throughout all of the exercises and meditations, one can learn about the self and become more mindful, which is the beginning to “enlightenment” or self-discovery. I'm not sure if we ever really become enlightened, but I do think we can discover more about ourselves and live happier more positive lives, and doing this book can help you with that.

Recommended to all who want to look within themselves a little deeper through meditation and self-discovery. Take this journey to help tame your ox.

The Oldest Ally: Britain and the Portuguese Connection, 1936-1941 (Royal Historical Society Studies in History), by Glyn Stone

The Oldest Allyexamines Britain's relations with Salazar's Portugal in the overall context of British foreign and strategic policy in the crucial period from 1936 to 1941. Dr Stone explores in detail British efforts to counteract Axis influence in Portugal both before and during and Second World War; the place of Portugal in Britain's European diplomacy during the twelve months preceding the outbreak of war; the military and diplomatic relationship in the context of non-intervention, appeasement and Portuguese neutrality; and the colonial, Atlantic and Far Eastern dimension, especially in the early years of the Second World War. This thoroughly researched and lucidly presented examination of an important but neglected area also sheds new light on such topics as the Spanish Civil War and colonial appeasement. It is a valuable addition to the literature on the `oldest alliance' — the Anglo-Portuguese relationship. GLYN STONEis principal lecturer in international history at the University of the West of England, Bristol.

Thoroughly researched... Dr Stone deserves congratulation for producing such a comprehensive and objective guide to this critical period in the Alliance's history. --English Histroical Review

This excellent book deserves a wide readership. --History

Discards the usual economic and political reasons for an alliance... argues that strategic consideration enabled Britain to overlook Salazar's repressive regime and even the lack of any economic advantage... most useful for diplomatic historians. --Choice

Zen's Chinese Heritage: The Masters and Their Teachings, by Andy Ferguson

Zen's Chinese Heritage traces twenty-five generations of inlightened Buddhist teachers, supplementing their core teachings with history, biography, and poetry. The result is an intimate and profound human portrait of the enlightened Zen ancients, and an unprecedented look into the depths of the rich cultural heritage.

In this new edition with even more valuable material, Ferguson surveys generations of Zen masters, moving chronologically through successive generations of ancestral teachers, supplementing their core teachings with history, biography, and starkly beautiful poetry. In addition to giving the reader the engaging sense of the "family history" of Zen, this uniquely valuable book paints a clear picture of the tradition's evolution as a religious, literary, and historical force.

Amazon.com Review
The history of Zen can be almost as perplexing as its cryptic koan. In many accounts of Zen history, it is hard to tell who is Chinese and who is Japanese, who lived in the 6th century and who in the 16th. Andy Ferguson attempts to clear the air once and for all. In Zen's Chinese Heritage, he organizes all of the Chinese Zen masters from Bodhidharma at the turn of the 5th century to Huikai in the 13th century, presenting their core records and writings in chronological order by generation--25 generations in all. Drawing from Wudeng Huiyan (Compendium of Five Lamps) and other records, Ferguson translates the classic Zen teachings (including dialogues, anecdotes, and koan) in spare, straightforward language. He also presents an expertly arranged foldout lineage chart of the Zen ancestors, with cross-referencing by Japanese, Chinese pinyin, and Chinese Wade-Giles transcriptions. Ferguson's work is not only a priceless treasury of Zen literature but also a road map to the history of Zen. --Brian Bruya

From Library Journal
It is something of a commonplace that Zen Buddhism is the property of Japan; this excellent and exhaustive book reminds us of the vast, though now neglected, patrimony of Buddhist spiritual knowledge that comes not from Japan but China. Ferguson's work is at once a history and an anthology of this fascinating tradition and includes many koans, anecdotes, and stories, as well as a wonderfully clear wallchart "Map of the Zen Ancestors." This splendid repository should give instruction and pleasure to the general reader as well as the professed Buddhist. Highly recommended for general and academic collections alike.

Review
"Zen's Chinese Heritage is clearly a monumental achievement. It will be central to the reference library of Zen students for our generation, and probably for some time thereafter." (Robert Aitken Roshi, author of Taking the Path of Zen)

"An indispensable reference for any student of Buddhism. Ferguson has given us an impeccable and very readable translation." (John Daido Loori, late abbot, Zen Mountain Monastery)

"This important book makes clear the deep past of Zen. Clear and rich, Zen's Chinese Heritage enriches our understanding of Buddhism." (Joan Halifax, Roshi)

"A great cover-to-cover read...Each reader will no doubt be moved and delighted by different accounts in this compendium...Will surely join Sazaki and Miura's Zen Dust and John Wu's The Golden Age of Zen as an indispensable reference work for Zen students, a window onto the struggles and humor and deadly-serious play of our forbears." (Zen Bow: A Publication of the Rochester Zen Center)

"This excellent and exhaustive book reminds us of the vast, now neglected, patrimony of Buddhist spiritual knowledge that comes not from Japan but China. Ferguson's work is at once a history and an anthology of this fascinating tradition and includes many koans, anecdotes and stories, as well as a wonderfully clear wallchart. This splendid repository should give instruction and pleasure to the general reader as well as the professed Buddhist. Highly recommended." (Library Journal)

"An intimate and human portrait of the enlightened Zen ancients and a look into the depths of their rich cultural heritage. The stories here offer opportunities to free ourselves from our habitual states and aid in the process of liberation. ...Despite the writings of many who have introduced Zen to Western readers, the surface of its history and teachings has barely been scratched. This volume goes a long way towards filling that gap." (The Beacon)

Discovering Our Zen Heritage
By JOSEPH DIVINCENZO
Zen's Chinese Heritage - The masters and their teachings, by Andrew Ferguson, is a long awaited reference for those wishing to appreciate the origins of the Zen tradition. As a long time practioner of Zen, the many illustrious and noteworthy ancestors of my tradition, have often been nothing more than a confusing collection of names, difficult to pronounce and even more difficult to appreciate as once real and living men and women. Andrew Ferguson's painstaking efforts at bringing to life these practioners of old, and providing us with history and anecdotes from their allusive lives, has enlivened my practice and given new meaning to the many wonderful and amazing persons I encounter in my koan study. This book is a wonderful guide and reference, especially with its accompanying lineage chart, for anyone who is either a practioner of this wonderful tradition or is solely interested in furthering their appreciation for the history of Zen.

Long Awaited Chan History Book
By T. D. Schott
I read this book back when I was living in a monastery. I found it to be extraordinary, the other monk that I was living with at the time was also amazed that such a book had been written and he was the one that order one for the monks and one for the nuns.

The book goes through the very beginnings of Chan (Chinese word for Zen) up through the "Golden Age" and beyond. I found very intriguing particularly to see that at one point in the Chan history that there was this point when so many enlightened masters had arose at once. Probably something we may never see again. You will find all Five Schools in here plus other schools that were not so prominent but had an impact as well.

Definitely a book worthy of your dollar.

Awakening Through Love: Unveiling Your Deepest Goodness, by John Makransky

Mother Theresa. The Dalai Lama. Nelson Mandela. Gandhi. Some admire such figures from afar and think, "How special they are; I could never be like that." But, as John Makransky has learned, the power of real and enduring love lies within every one of us. Awakening Through Love is his guide to finding it.

In Awakening Through Love, he pioneers new ways of making Tibetan meditations of compassion and wisdom accessible to people of all backgrounds and faiths. Drawing from Tibetan teachings of compassion and the Dzogchen teachings of innate wisdom, and using plain, practical instruction, he helps readers uncover the unity of wisdom and love in the very nature of their minds. Then Lama John describes how to actualize those qualities in every aspect of family life, work, service and social action.

Review
"Awakening Through Love is a root text in a lineage of applied social intelligence, offering us practical methods for cultivating our capacities for empathy and compassion--not in some remote mountain hermitage, but in the midst of life. John Makransky's wisdom will benefit anyone who yearns to become a more loving human being." (Daniel Goleman, author of Social Intelligence)

"The title here says it all. This very readable book by scholar-practitioner John Makaransky teaches us how to uncover and practice a boundless love and compassion that leads to 'awakening,' or enlightenment. The meditations originate from the Nyingma/Dzogchen tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, which Makransky has studied and practiced for twenty-five years. All the same, Makransky's heartfelt enthusiasm and the concrete methods he offers cross boundaries of spiritual affiliation. From a practical standpoint, Makransky says, any practice that undercuts self-cherishing will bring us closer to the 'pure perception' described in Dzogchen literature. In this sense, meditations on love and compassion are particularly potent, and Makransky promises that they will 'generate tremendous karmic power for progress in spiritual awakening.'" (Shambhala Sun)

"Awakening Through Love: Unveiling Your Deepest Goodness illustrates how people of all backgrounds and faiths can access the Tibetan Buddhist practice of compassion and wisdom. Each chapter includes step-by-step guided meditations. [...Author John] Makransky equally wants to communicate the heart of those traditions to non-Buddhists and ordinary folks, as he does in his latest book release." (Boston Globe)

"Awakening Through Love is an uplifting and joyful reminder of our human potential. As a manual for practice, it wonderfully supports our shift from a contracted self-centeredness to the profound expansiveness of connection with others." (Sharon Salzberg, author of Lovingkindness)

"Awakening Through Love presents a message of compassionate wisdom that is greatly needed in today's world. In this book Dr. John Makransky offers readers of all faiths and persuasions a profound guide to experience the deep and limitless love that has inspired and awakened Buddhist practitioners throughout the ages. Being both a learned scholar and an experienced practitioner, Dr. Makransky is well positioned to present the deep meaning of the Buddhist teaching to a contemporary audience. This book is an important contribution to the modern understanding of Buddhism that will serve as an inspiration and a friend for anyone who wishes to experience the great qualities of love, compassion, and wisdom that we all possess as our innermost being." (Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche, author of Medicine and Compassion)

"Awakening Through Love is that rare combination of fine Buddhist scholarship and deep meditative understanding. John Makransky has done us all a great service." (Joseph Goldstein, author of One Dharma)

"If 'All you need is love,' what does love need? How can we put love into actual practice, where it really counts and is often the most difficult? Perhaps there are no more important questions than these, and not only our happiness, but our very survival depends upon the answers. That's why John Makransky's book is such a treasure. He's that rare guide that you intuitively trust, leading the way through even the most dark and challenging places. At the end of his book we emerge wiser, lighter, and newly inspired to live the truth of our innermost hearts. Awakening Through Love distills the wisdom of Tibetan Buddhism into a practical manual for contemporary life. It's a must-read if you yearn for freedom, peace and healing, not to mention unshakeable joy." (Raphael Cushnir, author of Setting Your Heart on Fire and The One Thing Holding You Back: How Emotional Connection Breaks All Barriers)

"This book is an extended meditation on love, but also so much more. Makransky manages, in simple and straightforward words, to capture the essential insights of the Tibetan tradition, delivering it, as the Tibetan saying goes, 'into the very palm of our hand.' Written from the heart, it is bound to affect the heart of all who read it... Practical, profound and deeply moving." (Jose Ignacio Cabezon, XIVth Dalai Lama Professor of Tibetan Buddhism, UC Santa Barbara)

"John Makransky communicates a deep sense of Tibetan wisdom in an eminently accessible and engaging style. The book itself performs an act of attention, awareness, meditation and therapy. Reading becomes a transformative event. The writing is deft, compassionate and highly compelling." (Richard Kearney, Charles B. Seelig Professor of Philosophy at Boston College)

"A treasure of ambrosia-like wisdom, Awakening Through Love offers profound and clear instructions and meditations for realizing compassionate love, the essence of our pure human heart that awakens the awareness of universal peace and ultimate wisdom." (Tulku Thondup, author of Boundless Healing)

A Must-Have
By LW
Lama John Makransky's book is an invaluable guide to becoming a better, more loving person. His advice--based on many years of teaching and personal research-- is direct, profound and practical. He teaches that love, patience and compassion are not inborn-traits...rather, the ability to love is a skill-- and he gives the reader specific meditation practices to do at home to become more skillful with love. I recommend this book for anyone--Buddhist or non-Buddhist--who wants to love more fully.

~A gem~
By A. Hristic
This book is essentially a manual for love - receiving it, giving it, seeing it all around you, and bringing it out in all beings and situations. You could spend as little or as much time on each chapter, as each section reveals more and more every time you read it. Awakening through Love could be a great companion to the many other books on your shelf, or it could be a first concise introduction to Tibetan Buddhism and some of its practices. Either way, it is A GEM!

Lightning in a Bottle
By Constant reader
I've had the good fortune of learning these heart-opening, life-changing techniques directly from Lama John on retreats over the last several years. Now he has distilled the essence of the teachings in book form so that anyone, anywhere can put them into practice. That's great news for his readers and great news for the world. Many people make the serious error of thinking that human love is somehow antithetical to a life of meditation and enlightenment. Lama John shows how to use human love to open wide into meditation and enlightenment, and vice versa.
