Going on Being

I find Mark Epstein very innovating and creative, and that is excellent. I very much enjoyed reading Going to Pieces without Falling Apart, Thoughts Without a Thinker, Open to Desire, and now Going on Being. But there are two things bothering me:

One: I find he is too much a "blind" follower of what we know of the historical Buddha. It comes over as a bit dogmatic: the Buddha knew everything right and was right in everything. He was the perfect enlightend human being. Well, I've heard that before in my life.

Two: I think he is a bit idealistic. When he, for example, writes about female sexuality, he refers to an ideal experience, which many women never encounter in their lifetime.

But, in spite of these two remarks, his books are highly readable and they open new ways of looking at our intimate relations. So I would say: go on working, reflecting and writing, dear Epstein.

This book is not different from the previously published Going on Being

Going on Being: Life at the Crossroads of Buddhism and Psychotherapy is identical to Going on Being: Buddhism and the Way of Change. Some chapters have different titles, but they are identical. Whereas the 2002 book was published by Broadway, this one is published by Wisdom. That is the only difference, which is not made clear in the description and promotion of the Wisdom edition.

This is how psychotherapy should be! My son and I both relish anything written by Mark Epstein. He has done a wonderful work of simplifying ancient knowledge about human behavior with psychotherapy. The most satisfying books I've read in a long time.

About the Author
John Stanley, PhD, is a biologist who has led research groups in Canada, Switzerland, and the UK. He has held both university and government positions. He is a member of the New York Academy of Sciences.

David R. Loy's previous books include the acclaimed Money, Sex, War, Karma, The Great Awakening: A Buddhist Social Theory, and The Dharma of Dragons and Daemons, a finalist for the 2006 Mythopoeic Scholarship Award. He was the Besl Professor of Ethics/Religion and Society at Cincinnati's Xavier University.

Gyurme Dorje holds a PhD in Tibetan Literature and an MA in Sanskrit with Oriental Studies. From 1991 to 1996 he held research fellowships at London University, where he worked on the Encyclopaedic Tibetan-English Dictionary. He has written, edited, translated and contributed to numerous books on Tibetan culture.

Excellent Collection of Essays from Leading Buddhist Teachers

This book is a collection of writings from both the editors and 20+ Buddhist leaders and teachers about global warming, related ecological issues, and how Buddhist teachings offer insight into why this has occurred and how we can address it. Contributors include the Dalai Lama, Thich Nhat Hanh, Bhikkhi Bodhi, Robert Aitken Roshi, Joseph Goldstein, and others. Although I have some minor issues with the structure and tone of certain parts of this book, overall it is insightful and comprehensive.

First, an overview of the contents: After an introduction and opening by the current Dalai Lama (including a moving contemplative poem/prayer), there are several chapters by John Stanley (one of the editors) covering the science behind global warming, as well as its impact. This is followed by 'Asian Buddhist Perspectives', essays by several Tibetan Buddhist teachers and leaders presenting their thoughts and aspirational prayers. Following this is 'Western Buddhist Perspectives', in which a variety of teachers from all different Buddhist lineages, but all currently teaching in the West, share their thoughts. The book ends with 'Solutions', a collection of steps to address global warming and the related ecological issues, followed by a closing chapter by Thich Nhat Hanh.

This book is a call to action for those already convinced climate change is a, if not the, major issue facing humanity at this time. Those still on the fence might be turned off by certain statements, for although the editors cover the science behind global warming, and make some attempt to refute skeptics, their perspective on dissenting views regarding global warming are essentially derisive, as summed up here:

"Complex manipulative strategies always oil the wheels of society, and so it should not surprise us that collective denial has been encouraged and sustained by sophisticated efforts of social deception." (p. 225)

This tone surprised me a bit, and is one of two slight reservations I have about this book (and the reason for 4, instead of 5, stars.) Although it is meant to be a call to action, I felt a bit confused about who the target audience is - it seems unlikely someone not already concerned about global warming would pick up this book, but the editors chose to include supporting science, presumably to convince those not already convinced, and so the sometimes dismissive tone seemed counterproductive to that.

My other reservation is regarding the organization of the teachers selected. 'Asian Buddhist Perspectives' should more rightly be called 'Tibetan Buddhist Perspectives', as there are no other Buddhist schools represented in this section. And although the editors say in the introduction that their separation of Tibetan and Western perspectives was "not meant to create an artificial division in the one world of Buddhism but to acknowledge how Buddhism has been transmitted in our time...", I felt that the book's organization did, in fact, create an artificial division, and one that might turn off some Western Buddhists (again, presumably the target audience.) I also would personally have loved to have seen more women represented (two of 21 essays were contributed by women - Joanna Macy and Susan Murpy Roshi.)

Those reservations aside, this book does indeed offer a uniquely Buddhist perspective on the ecological challenges facing humanity today. Many essays offer a Buddhist analysis of how and why this crises has occurred, using Buddhist teachings on suffering (dukkha) and its origins (samudaya) to understand the roots of human behavior in relation to the environment. Others discuss teachings on dependent origination (pratityasamutpada) and lovingkindness (metta), to discuss the basis for a uniquely Buddhist response. As Gyalwang Karmapa XVII puts it, "Our aspiration as Dharma practitioners is to free all beings from suffering."

Several of the writers refute misperceptions of Buddhist teachings that might lead to a lack of response. I thought Joanna Macy covered this topic the best, with her list of 'spiritual traps' some might fall into:

"...That the phenomenal world is an illusion. Impermanent and made of matter, it is less worthy than a realm of pure spirit....That suffering is a mistake. Pain we may feel in beholding the world derives from our own cravings and attachments....That we create our world unilaterally by the power of our mind [and that therefore] grief for the plight of the world is negative thinking...And the corollary, that the world is already perfect when we view it spiritually [and so there is no] need to act." (p. 178)

As Thich Nhat Hanh puts it, partly in refutation of such views, "We are here to awaken from the illusion of our separateness."

Many of the writers look to Buddhist teachings for guidance on how to respond, and connect creating a sustainable world with 'the middle way' - striking a culture of balance, not grasping and greed. Buddhism's emphasis on personal responsibility is also discussed, and as Joseph Goldstein notes about his own Insight Meditation community, "if one or two people take the lead in making even small changes, it energizes the whole community."

Other more esoteric topics covered are how the current crises is related to the Kaliyuga or 'age of dregs', the period of history that Tibetan teachings posit we are currently in; and how the present state of the planet may impact the ability of beings to incarnate here.

Overall, this is an interesting read for any Buddhist looking to understand global warming and environmental issues in the framework of Buddhist teachings, or anyone already interested in global warming that is looking for a new way to respond.

Buy this book for lots of reasons

This is an excellent book, well worth taking the time to purchase and read and share with friends. Not to be confused with one of the many new age books detailing how badly civilization has created climate change without really presenting practical solutions. This book has deep insights, observations and everyday solutions for the present and future generations, written carefully and poignantly by the greatest Buddhist Lamas of our time, including the Dalai Lama and many others, compiled and carefully edited by John Stanley PhD.

The buddhist concepts outlined in this book such as collective and individual karma, personal responsibility and mind training need to be brought to the conversation of climate change, scholars, scientists and regular joes alike.

Terrifyingly good

I am very concerned about global warming and wanted to know what the great Buddhist masters, like HH Dalai Lama, had to say about such a major problem. The book is a call to action! The masters acknowledge the emergency that we are in and set out the way that we need to go about solving it. It's very heartening to hear the wisdom that they offer so as not to fall into despair.

About the Author
For nearly fifty years Ajahn Sumedho has embodied the Buddha's way. As a young man he completed an M.A. at the University of California at Berkeley, was a medic in the Navy, and taught in the Peace Corps in Borneo. For twelve years, beginning in 1966, he studied closely with the renowned meditation master Ajahn Chah, who appointed him to be the first Western abbot of a Thai monastery. Now based in England, he is the spiritual head of a global community of monks and nuns.

Ajahn Amaro is abbot of the Amaravati Buddhist Monastery in southeast England and author of numerous books and articles on Buddhist themes across traditions. Born in England in 1956, Ven. Amaro received his BSc. in Psychology and Physiology from the University of London. He studied Buddhism in Thailand in the Forest Tradition and was ordained as a bhikkhu by Thai meditation master Ajahn Chah at Wat Pah Nanachat in 1979. He returned to England and joined Ajahn Sumedho at the newly established Chithurst Monastery. He resided for many years at Amaravati Buddhist Monastery in England, and in 1996 he established Abhayagiri Monastery in Redwood Valley, California. He lived there until 2010, when he was called back to Amaravati to assume the duties of abbot.

The clarity of understanding.

The bulk of this book comes from "Intuitive Awareness", a free publication book published by Amaravati Publications (Amaravati being the monastery where Ajahn Sumedho lives). This Wisdom publication makes Ajahn Sumedho's teaching in "Intuitive Awareness" available to a wider audience than just those who visit Amaravati or the other monasteries associated with Ajahn Sumedho. The clarity, wisdom, humor and (above all) practicality of Ajahn Sumedho's teaching usually come as a surprise to those not familiar with him. This is not a book of esoteric or metaphysical mumbo-jumbo. It is, instead, the deep insight and wisdom of a Buddhist monk who has dedicated his life to discovering the immediacy of Ultimate Truth and who is sharing with us his knowledge and wisdom as he encourages us along the Path. There are many, many spiritual books offering helpful (and not-so-helpful) guidance. Very, very few offer the practical, non-proselytizing guidance and wisdom found in "The Sound Of Silence."

Diamonds on every page

I have been fortunate enough to have met and spent time with Ajahn Sumedho. This collection of some of his teachings is a gem. He offers insight, not through complex Buddhist theology or intricate practice, but using everyday experiences as a way to 'see' the mischief of the ego that seeks distraction and chaos. With a steady, often humorous, style of 'talk' he gently guides us toward an understanding of the silence that we can achieve with application rather than slavery. If you cannot meet him, this book will give you a real human feel for the style and wisdom of his Dhamma talks.

Great for beginners and seasoned meditators, NOT for scholars

This is a worthy compilation of Ajahn Sumedho's teachings. It was originally a free book called "Intuitive Awareness" filled with talks geared towards the monastic community of the early Western Forest Sangha but this book has talks geared towards lay retreatants as well so you can't go wrong with this. Ajahn Sumedho is very unconventional for a Theravada monk in terms of his teaching style and the things he emphasizes but his methods are no joke. He has proven himself over and over to be the real deal and the upaya(skillful means) he brings to Western Buddhists in this book are not to be scoffed at. This is really a great book that can be opened up again and again by beginners and seasoned Buddhist meditators alike. This is not for scholars unless you want to put aside your assumptions, sit down and meditate. There are plenty of scholarly books on Buddhism but nothing Ajahn Sumedho puts out is what you are looking for.

William Blum is one of the United States' leading non-mainstream experts on American foreign policy. He left the State Department in 1967, abandoning his aspiration of becoming a Foreign Service Officer because of his opposition to what the US was doing in Vietnam. He then became a founder and editor of the Washington Free Press, the first 'alternative' newspaper in the capital. Blum has been a freelance journalist in the US, Europe and South America. Fascinating anti-Establishment perspective on CIA operations

William Blum has without doubt makes a significant contribution to the history of the Cold War. Furthermore, his account
shows that the guiding logic of the CIA is as applicable today as it was in the days of the USSR. Foreign policy, as Kissenger
said, is most definitely not about "missionary work", rather being formulated in the interests of the ruling elite in the USA.
The main point arising from this book is that what a country does, and what it says it does, rarely coincide (in this way states are very similar to normal people). Lifting the veil of successive US governments' benign rhetoric, Blum reveals undercurrents or pure greed and savagery. International Relations can only be truly understood by following the interests of interested players, rather than politicians' vacuous pontifications.
The maxim of "follow the money" can be applied to Blum's methodology - charting the rise of murderous and fascist regimes
against the profitability of US investors.
Although much of what Blum claims to have happened is unverifiable, being based on secret concordats, gentlemen's
agreements and sometimes hearsay, his collection, corroboration and systematisation of sources does much to counter this.
Blum can lay no claim to the absolute truth (though who can?), but his account of the CIA is closer to the mark than any other
official history.
In effect, Blum is asking his readers to pose a simple question: what motivates organisations such as the CIA? Is it the
wishy-washy benign do-gooder rhetoric of career politicians? Or the cool calculations of material self-interest. Blum's
convincing analysis would have us accept the latter.

A most important source study book

I bought my copy in 1987 and consider it one of the most important books written. Mainly it shows that the United States is not concerned with the welfare of the world as a whole but only concerned as to how it can control the world so it can theive the world's riches.
Recently, S11, some "Americans" (i.e., United States citizens) asked why the world hated them so. This book will largely explain why -- The citizens of the United States greed and arrogance knows no bounds; in fact it is not a matter for reflection or analysis.
"Americans" are just the most important people on earth and everyone else is there to be their slaves and sychophants. OR ELSE! Or else the ones who don't act like catamites to the "Americans" deserve to be bombed back to the stone age, including former allies like Osema bin Laden, who was an "ally" when it suited the spooks of the CIA. Wounded 8 times in fighting the Russians on behalf of the US, he is not a little "terrorist" nobody, "wanted dead or alive", as that sickening coward George W Bush puts it.
I fought in Korea for 2 and a 1/2 years and never have I witnessed such inept and cowardly troops when it came to hand to hand infantry fighting as the "Americans" (not the Canadians) including the US Marines.
They are cowards. White-collar killers dropping bombs from 40 thousand feet is about all they're capable of when it comes to "war", which of course isn't war but a turky shoot. It is time William Blum's book published by ZED Books so long ago was republished in toto without revision for all this emerges in fairly plain language -- why everyone hates the United States.

About the Author
Lorne Ladner, PhD, is a clinical psychologist in private practice in the suburbs of Washington DC, where he also directs and teaches at the Guhyasamaja Buddhist Center. Dr. Ladner has produced a training video on Mindful Therapy and provides workshops on the psychology of positive emotions, the integration of meditation and sychotherapy, and on Buddhist psychology. He is the author of The Lost Art of Compassion: Discovering the Practice of Happiness in the Meeting of Buddhism and Psychology (HarperOne 2004).

Lama Thubten Zopa Rinpoche is the Spiritual Director of the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition (FPMT), a worldwide network of Buddhist centers, monasteries, and affiliated projects, including Wisdom Publications. Rinpoche was born in 1946 in the village of Thami in the Solo Khumbu region of Nepal near Mount Everest. His books include Transforming Problems into Happiness, How to Be Happy, and Ultimate Healing. He lives in Aptos, California.

I'm rather surprised that this book hasn't been reviewed here yet. It's been in print for 4 years; to the best of my knowledge it's the only book in English that deals with prayer wheel practice; and it's an excellent book besides.

Motion has long played a significant role in religion. Consider Whirling Dervishes and their trance-inducing movements, or the intense swaying of Hasidic Jews in prayer, or the worship in dance of the American Shakers. In Buddhism one finds full-body prostrations, ritual hand movements known as mudra, and circumambulations of shrines. Less known because less common is the practice of prayer wheels.

The practice is more than just twirling a rotating wheel. It involves recitation of -- typically -- the mantra "Om Mani Padme Hum" while visualizing the light of the thousands of mantras written on reels of paper (or, increasingly, microfilm) reaching out to beings in every state of existence. The wheel itself is only a conveyance for a continual expression of compassion.

THE WHEEL OF GREAT COMPASSION includes the author's own research and thoughts on the practice as well as classic instructions from the pens of eminent Tibetan divines. The book also includes a description of the physical mechanics of the prayer wheel and some thoughts as to how one might make one's own. The book concludes with a sadhana -- a liturgy including visualization -- providing the reader a relatively complete and straightforward way of emptying oneself in service to others.

What a wonderful book. The book was very helpful to me in detailing the history and roots of the Prayer Wheel. In addition, the details and instructions on how to make your own Prayer Wheel are very helpful. Just having the book close reminds me of the energy of my Prayer Wheel. Thanks for creating such a great resource.

Make Your Own Mani Wheel

If you have ever wondered about the function of prayer wheels, this book provides an overview and includes instructions for making your own wheel.

The bulk of the book contains translations of various teachers addressing the purpose and use of the prayer or mani wheel. If, like me, you are marginally conversant with Buddhist precepts, you will make use of the copious footnotes contained in the back. The author took care not be too repetitious. The book contains some photographs of wheels, though none are particularly professional or impressive. He also provides detailed instructions and ink diagrams for constructing your own wheel and a very nice meditation to use while turning the wheel.

All in all, this provides a decent background and good instructions. I would have preferred more on the actual practice(ie, how fast to turn the wheel, etc) as opposed to the philosophy. However, the author is quite sincere and conveys a deep and abiding love of the faith and the practice.

A POPULAR HISTORY OF THE STORY LEADING UP TO THE MODERN SANTA

This is a popular, well-illustrated (with original drawings, rather than photos or reproductions) 1987 book detailing the history of the transition from "Saint Nicholas" to "Santa Claus."

Here are some quotations from the book:

"At (the Council of) Nicea the debate was long and often heated---so heated, in fact, that at one point, (St.) Nicholas lost his temper and punched a fellow bishop on the nose!" (Pg. 25)
"According to the Dutch, Sinter Klaas spends most of the year in Spain compiling all the deeds, good or bad, of Dutch children... To help him he has a secretary and little Moorish assistant called Black Peter (Zwart Piet)... Every year during the second fortnight in November, Sinter Klaas's secretary packs up the big red ledger. Black Peter loads up the toys and presents, and they all set sail for the Netherlands... While Sinter Klaas listens to whispered confessions, Black Peter distributes small presents or, supposedly, the occasional reprimand... If children have been naughty he should leave a switch instead of a present so that their parents can give them a beating. If they have been excessively bad he is supposed to carry them off in his sack." (Pg. 51-53)
"Throughout Protestant Europe, St. Nicholas was secularized. In Holland, Sint Niklaas became the vernacular Sinter Klaas and while he kept the medieval garb of a bishop complete with mitre and crozier, he became a figure of fun---a folk character with no religious connotations." (Pg. 76)
"Santa Claus was taking over from all his rivals. In 1852 he had a town in Indiana named after him... In due course a post office was established and the little community continued... until during the First World War letters addressed to Santa Claus started arriving... So the authorities in Washington decided to solve the problem by closing down the post office altogether. There was an enormous outcry... In the end Washington reluctantly gave in but ruled that there would never be another Santa Claus Post Office in the United States." (Pg. 94-95)

Davis proceeds from the assumption that, in their representations of femininity, Disney films both reflected and helped shape the attitudes of the wider society, both at the time of their first release and subsequently. Analyzing the construction of (mainly human) female characters in the animated films of the Walt Disney Studio between 1937 and 2001, she attempts to establish the extent to which these characterizations were shaped by wider popular stereotypes. Davis argues that it is within the most constructed of all moving images of the female form―the heroine of the animated film―that the most telling aspects of Woman as the subject of Hollywood iconography and cultural ideas of American womanhood are to be found.

Amy M. Davis is a lecturer in the School of Media and Performing Arts and a course director for Film Studies at the University of Ulster, Coleraine. She is author of several articles on the subject of Disney feature animation.

Great Start

It's very easy to criticize Disney's portrayals of women over the years. In fact, they do not fit with the current cultural idea of a motivated, active, and very maternal woman. Others believe that Disney is so ingrained into our popular culture it should be immune from criticism.

The tone of this book feels sympathetic to Disney more so than many essays about this topic. It considers many factors that contribute to the portrayals. But it is also not entirely apologetic for these images.

The book is all by one person. Her sources are cited well within the page in a way that academics can easily understand and casual readers can easily ignore. The chapters are divided by time period.

The worst thing I can say about the book is that there should have been more in some places and less in others. Chapter 2 is a brief history of animation. I'm not entirely sure that the actions of other studios, especially ones that weren't making movies, is relevant to the topic. In addition, the book only talks about human characters as they appeared as main characters in animated movies. There is no discussion about the portrayals of female animals in movies like "The Lion King" or "Robin Hood," which I feel has a great diversity of female characters. I also feel that the lack of women in movies like "The Jungle Book" and "Winnie the Pooh" is worthy of discussion.

I wanted to give this book four stars as it is one of the few academic books published that provides a critical evaluation of Disney animation from a gender perspective, but there were a few issues I had with this book that made it difficult to do so. The writing is at times clunky, with unnecessary mistakes scattered throughout the book (including misprints as well the consistent misspelling of the character Phoebus's name from "The Hunchback of Notre Dame") which were both distracting and detracted from the reading experience.

While the author's analysis of films tended to be sympathetic towards the Disney Company, it is this sympathetic stance that makes "Good Girls" a more accessible read for those outside of the academic world. "Good Girls" provides readers with a very good introduction to gender analysis in film, as well as a comprehensive history of women in animation, film, and Disney. However, for those looking for a more in-depth, critical analysis of gender in Disney films, I would recommend picking up "From Mouse to Mermaid" instead.

Absolutely excellent book! I have used it numerous times for projects and meetings. Wonderful analysis of characters and character types from an educational and analytical standpoint. This author does not let bias get in the way. Highly recommended for anyone researching or interested in the feminine archetypes of Disney women!
