A Song for the King: Saraha on Mahamudra MeditationFrom Wisdom Publications

Mahamudra is the basic meditation practice for many Tibetan Buddhists, particularly of the Kagyu tradition. It is particularly adaptable for modern people, since it involves no rituals and can be incorporated into all daily activities. Saraha's "Song for the King" is a short verse text from classical India that is a basis for the tradition and is widely known in Tibetan Buddhist circles. It is often the basis for teachings given in the West, but there is only one outdated translation of it in print, first published in 1969. Michele Martin has produced a stellar new translation, which is accompanied by a commentary from the well-known teacher Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche, who is uniquely skilled and concerned with making this method of meditation available to Westerners.

While pithy and accessible, the book easily stands up to academic scrutiny, and includes the original Tibetan as well - making it ideal for the popular, scholarly, and Tibetan audiences all at once.

Lovely doha, nice commentary
By Neal J. Pollock
This book is based on talks given in Colorado in 2002 updating Karma Trinlepa's (1456-1539) commentary on the Mahasidda Saraha's doha (p. 17: "song of attainment" or "song of experience" on Mahamudra (MM). Saraha's unique system has 4 joys/seals/symbols/samadhis (see chart on p. 100) & uses poetic metaphors extensively. As translator Michele Martin states on p.1: "Metaphors have the capacity to evoke an experiential reality that transcends the intellect, & so they are not only a teaching tool to deepen understanding but an opening form another dimension." The song is relatively straightforward at first but becomes progressively more difficult, using Tibetan allusions etc. Thus, while Thrangu R. provides some personal amplification at first, his commentary becomes absolutely necessary as the text progresses-- p. 83: "To avoid a possible misunderstanding, it is crucial to know what this verse does & does not say." Helpful Q&A from the oral presentations & an appendix with text translated are also provided. Some of the main points in the text are the obstacles to practice including the need for Mahamudra such that the path of method (generation/completion stages & the 4 Yogas of Naropa) are incomplete without MM. While some value is assigned to logical analysis, the emphasis is on meditation experience. Indeed, p. 75: "Milarepa said to Gampopa: `While meditating on Mahamudra, do not engage in logical analysis. Non-conceptual wisdom will vanish if you do.'" Method path techniques are useful if performed under the MM view [similar to Kabbalist view of performing rituals with proper kabbalistic kavvanah or intention]. Perhaps the most important distinction that Thrangu R. makes is that between self-awareness & self-aware wisdom. My favorite metaphor is his comparison of p. 77: television pixels (colored dots on the screen) with viewer's emotional involvement in the show as depicting our ignorance. Overall, the doha is quite lovely & the commentary is helpful, but there isn't much new here if one has read several of Thrangu Rinpoche's prior books.

very clear
By kenko
I love this book for many reasons. And I agree with the preceding reviewer: The ability to be able to make a clear distinction between self-awareness & self-aware wisdom is of utmost importance. Just in order to demonstrate how immensely important the clear understanding of this distinction is, I'd like to quote an episode of zen-master Bassui's life, actually the moment of his final breakthrough:

"One day during their meeting, Koho asked Bassui why Joshu responded to the koan "Does a dog have Buddha nature?" with the one word mu ("no"). Bassui answered with the verse:

Mountains, rivers, and the great earth,
Grass, trees, and the forests,
All are mu.

When Koho reprimanded him for responding with his rational mind, Bassui felt as though the foundation of his body and mind fell off like the bottom falling off a barrel." (see: "Mud and Water: The Teachings of Zen Master Bassui")

This episode shows very clearly that the ability of this particular discrimination is THE key to successful practice of middle-way-meditation. At the same time it becomes obvious, that it will probably not suffice to just understand Khenchen Thrangu's excellent pointer just intellectually. But also this will be clear to the thoughtful reader after having worked through the exceptionally clear pointers of this most exceptionally gifted teacher. All in all an excellent, easy to understand, and most importantly: enlightened general map for the way leading to complete emancipation. May all living beings be happy!

A Song for the King: Sharaha on Mahamudra Meditation
By Wandering Swan
These few 40 verses are fleshed out, ending with a very rare Dran Med appendix, which leaves the text in Open Space.
