About the Author
Tom Lennon has worked at the British Research Establishment for over 20 years. He was responsible for the programme of full-scale fire tests carried out at BRE s large-scale test facility at Cardinton on steel, concrete and timber framed buildings. Mr Lennon has extensive experience of the Structural Eurocodes. He is a prominent member of the British Standards committee B525/-/32, the mirror group for the fire part of EC1 responsible for the implementation of the code in the UK. Mr Lennon is a member of the project team responsible for developing the draft National Annex for use with EN 1991-1-1-2. He is author of a number of papers, design guides and journal articles on the subject of structural fire engineering design.

Ireland in the Boom Times, and a Big Gay Shot meets his Man

I really liked Tom Lennon's first book `When Love Comes To Town', so was looking forward to this one. It was compared to J.D. Salinger as it was such a ground breaking book for an Irish author. What it really meant was that the clutch the Roman Catholic Church has on societies morals were only just weakening. That is true of this book also, and I speak as a gay Catholic (though a bit lapsed - quite a bit actually).
This tells the story of Paul, he is 28 married with a young child, he earns over £50K has a BMW 520i and lives in one of the new out of town developments, that was the signature of the Celtic Tiger Economy. We now know that this tiger turned into a bit of a pussy sometime later. This is based in the nineties and you can see the optimism in the book, which to be fair is overstated a couple of times. Calling Dublin `the cultural capital of the world' yeah right, they still have shops that sell gruel!
Any way Paul works for some company that he feels has a policy of only employing homophobes, and then his new assistant arrive. He is 23, he has blue eyes and more importantly he is a he. Yes its man on man time, but is Jonny the `G' word? Well of course he ruddy well is. What then follows is the highs and lows of being in love, trapped inside a prison of your own making and total regret at living a lie in a double life which ultimately leaves you soul less.
Lennon writes in a very accessible style and you can feel the autobiographical tension of some of the scenes and you really do not want to stop reading it, I actually wanted to give this five stars, but it is very good, not excellent. One of the real strengths is the time setting, it is a little snap shot of what Ireland was like during the good times and would juxtapose nicely but sadly against what is happening at the moment. I have not been able to find any more books by Tom Lennon which I think is a shame, I hope he does find another one in him as I have enjoyed both offerings.

An emotional roller coaster

Not very often I can say those famous words ` a real page-turner'. I don't think that I have used those words in any review on Amazon actually. But this really is such a book. The time line is quite short - a month possibly - and the intensity of the emotional trauma of Paul Cullen is so well portrayed that you have to get to the next page to learn what is happening - what mess do his lies get him into now. How long can he keep this charade up once the shell has been broken? Not long as it happens but we are carried along by the collapsing mind. I felt very sorry for the man really at the end of the book. And sorry for myself that it was finished. I notice this author abruptly stopped publishing so there are no more to read so maybe that added to the sad end. Read it and prepare for your emotional rollercoaster. If nothing else you will get a very vivid description of what it feels like to be intensely in love and the really crazy things it makes you do.
