A strange sort of travelogue

Our Dublin cabbie, Brian, had this book tucked away in his taxi as he drove us to into City Centre from the airport. One of two books he recommended, this one has a particular soft spot in his memory. He is of an age where his memories dovetail nicely with the author's, and the perspective to recognize both the time capsule of mid-century Dublin and what the city looks like today. (The Dublin of the 1960s was sufficiently dreary that it stood in nicely for East Berlin for the movie "The Spy Who came in From the Cold.")
Eamonn MacThomais penned this book while in Mountjoy Prison. He was guilty of editing the Republican journal, An Phoblacht, and used the book to both remember his city and lead the reader on a series of tours. From childhood games to colorful street characters, from amazing architecture to an insiders view of the city's famous prisons, this is strange sort of travelogue. While I have enjoyed reading about the many sites we saw on our visit, it would have been better to have MacThomais "lead" you on his rambling, eclectic journey. Perhaps part of the fun may be in not seeing what he saw, as some of these sites have certainly come under the wrecker's ball.
Never far from the surface are the numerous rebellions against the English. Robert Emmet and Patrick Pearse, the 1916 Easter Rebellion, are nearly living history for the Dubliners. And has there ever been a people who love and admire their writers more? James Joyce, Oliver Goharty, James Kavanaugh, Brendan Behan...they all stand and are counted.
A charming book. Uneven in style, but occasionally he pens a corker..."a rasher-and-egg frying on a shovel over a coke fire in a workingman's hut..."
