A veritable cottage industry now exists to examine Christian themes in popular culture. But what of the Buddhist themes? Loy and his wife, Goodhew, offer a brief but compelling foray into the dharma teachings of modern fantasy in YA literature and film. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy, for example, may seem to be entirely un-Buddhist (it features a Christian-influenced resurrection and posits a profound dualism between good and evil), but its preference for non-violence, shown in the repeated sparing of Gollum's life, resonates with Buddhist principles. More importantly, Frodo's quest is one of renunciation; the story is fundamentally a lesson of nonattachment. Other chapters address Michael Ende's Momo, which the authors call "a Zen-like critique of our obsession with time"; two films of Japanese anime master Hayao Miyazaki; the Earthsea books of Ursula Le Guin; and Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy. The authors concede that with the exception of Le Guin, none of the creators of these works ever explicitly refer to Buddhism, but the dharma connections are usually sound and fruitful. For best effect, readers will come to the book with some knowledge of Buddhism and of the works under discussion, which are not laid out in detail.

About the Author
David R. Loy's books include the acclaimed Money, Sex, War, Karma: Notes for a Buddhist Revolution; The Great Awakening: A Buddhist Social Theory; The World Is Made of Stories; A Buddhist Response to the Climate Emergency; and The Dharma of Dragons and Daemons, a finalist for the 2006 Mythopoeic Scholarship Award. He was the Besl Professor of Ethics/Religion and Society at Cincinnati's Xavier University and is qualified as a teacher in the Sanbo Kyodan tradition of Japanese Buddhism. 

His articles appear regularly in the pages of major journals such as Tikkun and Buddhist magazines including Tricycle, Turning Wheel, Shambhala Sun and Buddhadharma, as well as in a variety of scholarly journals. He is on the editorial or advisory boards of the journalsCultural Dynamics, Worldviews, Contemporary Buddhism, Journal of Transpersonal Psychology, and World Fellowship of Buddhists Review. He is also on the advisory boards of Buddhist Global Relief, the Clear View Project, Zen Peacemakers, and the Ernest Becker Foundation. He lives in Boulder, CO.

You don't have to be a Buddhist or a fantasy reader

This is an enjoyable ( and rare) look at Buddhist themes in Western literature. I picked it up for the section on the His Dark Materials trilogy, but was drawn into the section on Tolkien, and was introduced to several works I had never heard of. Just as a book does not need to be explicitly Buddhist to illustrate Buddhist concepts, you don't need to be a Buddhist-or a fantasy reader- to enjoy the literary and spiritual insights of this book.

Wonderful book!

This is a wonderful book about buddhism. Its interesting how they have changed my perspective with it. I love reading and writing though and I think for someone who didn't it may not be the best, but if you are a writer or fantasy fan that is interested in buddhism its great. Then again I love almost anything written by David R. Loy!

Not for scholars

As a graduate student specializing in religion I found this book wanting. If you're looking for a "soft" approach to finding spirituality in popular culture, then this book may be for you. Despite the autho'rs credentials this minimally researched book acts more as a stepping stone to creative thinking about identifying basic Buddhist concepts in fantasy writing than a serious attempt at scholarly inquiry. Often the connections are weak, but I commend Roy for his attempt because the field definitely needs more books that attend to Buddhist themes in popular culture. Instead, I would refer readers to the "Philosophy and XX" series that looks at specific movies/books such as The Matrix, The Lord of the Ring trilogy or The Simpsons.

This book argues that these aphrodisiacs wereused not simply for sexual pleasure, but, more importantly, to enhance fertility and reproductive success; and that at that time sexual desire and pleasure were felt to be far more intimately connected to conception and fertilitythan is the case today. It draws on a range of sources to show how, from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries, aphrodisiacs were recommended for the treatment of infertility, and how men and women utilised them to regulate their fertility. Via themes such as gender, witchcraft and domestic medical practice, it shows that aphrodisiacs were more than just sexual curiosities - they were medicines which operated in a number of different ways unfamiliar now, and their use illuminates popular understandings of sex and reproduction in this period.

Richard K. Payne is Dean and Yehan Numata Professor of Japanese Buddhist Studies at the Institute of Buddhist Studies in Berkeley, California. A member of the doctoral faculty of the Graduate Theological Union, he is also a collaborating researcher with the Open Research Center for the Humanities, Science, and Religion at Ryukoku University in Kyoto, Japan. He is an ordained Shingon Buddhist priest.

Well Written Book!

I felt bad that this book earned only three stars based on one review. This anthology is, in fact, well written--excellent collection of intellectually challenging and spiritually motivating essays. It is also very useful for those who are not familiar with Buddhism. Essays analyze the political economic structures that feed human desires and greed and thus, create only suffering not only for humans but also for other living creatures. The heart of Buddhism is to end suffering. The various essays challenge the readers to rigorously analyze social structures through the Buddhist lens of Four Noble Truths and three poisons (i.e. ignorance, greed) and to contemplate how to practice Buddhism in American society dominated by callous capitalism. I especially appreciate that this book does not portray Buddhism as a feel-good religion or individualized spirituality.

A senseless killing…

… and aren’t so many?

Samuel Taylor Coleridge lived from 1772 to 1834. He was often in ill-health, both physical and mentally. And he was a drug addict. Out of his anguish came this beautiful poem, which I first read, as so many of us did, in a high school English anthology. And I think I passed the test! Regrettably, it has taken more than half a century for a re-read, and there should have been at least a couple other re-reads along the way. Praise be to Kindle. It now makes the selection of particular “classical” works so easy, and often they are free, as this one was, and at your finger-tips within a minute or two.

As the title states, it is a poem that concerns an old sailor, his days at sea, and a very notable mistake. It is a poem told, inexplicably, or not, at a wedding feast, since it is a “life-lesson.” It is a sea trip from cold to warm. It is about being motionless at sea, because “For all averred, I killed the bird That made the breeze blow.” That bird was a harmless Albatross. And the following part of the poem has entered the English language as an apt metaphor for ill-considered actions that come back to haunt the doer: “Instead of the cross, the Albatross about my neck was hung.

The poem is also about remorse, and forgiveness, phrased as: “The man hath penance done, and penance more will do.” They do make it to that elusive safe-harbor. And Coleridge closes, with this most healthy and sane advice, about our place in the universe, and how we should treat others, of our species and not, both ‘great and small’: “He prayeth well, who loveth well, Both man and bird and beast. He prayeth best, who loveth best, All things both great and small; For the dear God who loveth us, He made and loveth all.”

It is a tight, fast-paced poem with memorable imagery, suitable to be read in high school still, or many years beyond. 5-stars.

Suddenly, I remember why I love STC so much.

I can't really say I've ever read anything by S.T. Coleridge that I didn't like. This has a very chilling mood and feel about it. It makes you feel as if you are there on the boat and heavy hearted for the poor albatross and the mariner. I also enjoyed the play on the word "albatross", for that matter. I could probably write a entire essay on this poem. If you weren't fortunate enough to have read it in high school, please do so now. It's packed full with many literary devices and techniques.

Don't bother. Super low quality.

The pictures are blurry and useless and there are advertisements in it and it is basically the text you can find for free online with some super low quality pictures thrown in. Don't buy it. I only kept mine because Amazon said I didn't have to ship it back when I asked for a refund.
