About the Author
John D. Dunne is a professor of Buddhist Studies at Emory University in Atlanta. He attended Amherst College and in 1999 received his PhD in Sanskrit and Tibetan studies from Harvard University. Before Emory, John was on the faculty of the University of Wisconsin-Madison and conducted research at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland, and the Central University of Higher Tibetan Studies in Sarnath, India. A co-director of Emory's Collaborative for Contemplative Studies as well as the Encyclopedia of Contemplative Practices, he is also a fellow of the Mind and Life Institute and an advisor to the Center for Investigating HealthyMinds. He frequently serves as a translator for Tibetan scholars, and as a consultant, he is involved in various scientific studies of contemplative practices.

An Important Contribution to Buddhist Epistemology

This book will be challenging for those who do not have a medium-to-strong background in Buddhist philosophy, although a background in western philosophy might be sufficient. John Dunne is considered one of the most prominent rising scholars in the field of Buddhist studies in the US, following on from the generation of Robert Thurman, Jeffrey Hopkins, and others. Although published by Wisdom Publications, one should know that this book is written more for scholars than for Buddhist practitioners. Not that these two are mutually exclusive categories, by any means. In fact, Buddhist monastic education places a great emphasis on the works of Dharmakirti precisely because an understanding of epistemology, logic, and reasoning is an invaluable guide to the practice of the Buddhist path, which involves developing a correct understanding of how things exist.

Despite the tremendous importance of Dharmakirti for Mahayana Buddhism (and even for the development of Indian philosophy more generally), there are not many books that treat in detail the writings of this powerful thinker. Based on a command of Sanskrit and Tibetan, and a strong knowledge of Buddhist philosophy, John Dunne has created what will surely be regarded as the starting place for the study of Dharmakirti in the English language. Because Dharmakirti wrote mainly in the modes of the Sautrantika and Yogacara philosophical "tenet schools," this book also serves as a very good work for coming to understand Sautrantika philosophy.

love it hate it

my god do I hate this book. Yet it could be the only copy directly related to Dharmakīrti's in the entire state of Connecticut.

from a student's standpoint I hate the way the book is laid out. the first 40 pages are spent giving you tips on how to understand Dharmakīrti's rather than talking about what his actual work. In edition the book is set up for people with a philosophy background, or at least I would assume so given it's colorful vocabulary.

This being said, out of all the books I had in front of me this was probably the most useful of them all.

for anyone using this book as research material skip to page 20 and then google standard encyclopedia of philosophy Dharmakīrti's it will help you decrypt a lot of whats being said.

This is a well written, timely examination of some of the most important issues facing contempoarary students of Tibetan Buddhist philosophy. The author makes it accessible to the lay student without sacrificing rigor for the specialist. With the current interest in Buddhist philosphy and it's relation to Western thought, for my money, this is a must read. We are lucky to have the efforts of this author placed on this important subject.

About the Author
Daniel P. Brown is the director of the Center for Integrative Psychotherapy in Newton, Massachusetts, and an associate clinical professor of psychology at Harvard Medical School. Trained in Buddhist philosophy and languages at the University of Chicago and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he did his dissertation on mahamudra meditation texts, he has maintained close relations with Tibetan teachers of the Gelug, Kagyu, and Nyingma lineages for more than thirty-five years as well as exploring the Theravada mindfulness traditions in Burma and Thailand. The author of fourteen books, including Transformations of Consciousness, he lives in Newton, Massachusetts.

Robert Thurman holds the Jey Tsong Khapa Chair in Indo-Tibetan Buddhist Studies at Columbia University. After education at Philips Exeter and Harvard, he studied Tibet and Tibetan Buddhism for almost thirty years as a personal student of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. He has written both scholarly and popular books, and has lectured widely all over the world. As President of the American Institute for Buddhist Studies, he convened the First Inner Science Conference with His Holiness the Dalai Lama at Amherst College in 1984. He is also a founding trustee of Tibet House New York.

Light in the West!

I will try to be succinct. I have co-directed a meditation center for some 25 years, studied (and practiced) under Tibetans for 40 years many of the practices and techniques described by Daniel Brown. I have worked with a high rinpoche for the last 30 years on studying and practicing mahamudra. My point is that this material is not new to me.

When I first saw this very large book, I assumed that it was just another derivative dharma book of the kind that needs too-many words to say not enough, and seldom communicates what is actually needed by readers.

Once I slowed down enough to read the book carefully, I must say that my original impression of the book was wrong.

This book is written with great attention to detail and accuracy. More important to me, the author obviously is devoted to the subject matter, has direct experience in the practices, and expresses it in a kind and loving way, not just as a scholar. I find this same sense of authenticity and personal knowledge in the works of the great historian of comparative religions, Mircea Eliade. This combination of scholar and practitioner is rare in my experience. Brown actually demonstrates the fruits of the practices he so diligently documents.

I must have a thousand dharma books around the center, including many of the original texts that Dr. Brown refers to, so I did not expect to find much new to me. In fact, the way Brown has interwoven the original material with his own experience and knowledge is quite new (at least for a westerner), and extraordinary.

"Pointing Out the Great Way" summarizes a vast range of authentic sources and compiles them into a single volume with remarkable clarity. It occurs to me that this book is not unlike many of the great dharma reference texts Brown documents, and it is written by an author for whom English is the native language! I find this of real help.

In my opinion, this is not really a book for beginners in meditation, although the introduction is lucid and of use to everyone. From there on, Dr. Brown lays out the graduated path of learning meditation, from the beginning to techniques more advanced than I know or can follow. Along the way, Brown presents a special vocabulary that takes some learning, but in the long run it is necessary for clarity's sake.

In summary, I find it hard to believe I did not discover this book sooner and I find myself using it just as I use many of the classic Tibetan texts on mahamudra. This book is indeed a "pointing out," just as the title (and tradition) requires. I seldom stray from reading the original mahamudra texts themselves, but I have no problem whatsoever recommending "Pointing Out the Great Way" to any serious student of meditation.

The Most Significant and Complete book on Vajrayana Buddhism

Pointing Out the Great Way is written by a Harvard Psychologist, with an introduction by Robert Thurman, one of the leading experts on Tibetan Buddhism. This book is the most in depth and complete analysis of the Mahamudra tradition. Brown asserts in his previous book, Transformations in Consciousness written with Ken Wilber, that there is a cross religion validity of the stages that lead up to enlightenment is both Buddhism and Vedanta Hinduism. Pointing Out the Great Way follows the same pattern Brown establishes Transformations in Consciousness. Pointing Out the Great Way is organized following this step by step process of esoteric instructions to remove the obstructions so the individual obtains a pure sustained nondual realization of fruition enlightenment. Brown complied many of the most secret texts to form one massive and complete text. The book is very dense, and not a light read at all. This book is for anyone who is serious in practicing or understanding Tibetan Buddhism beyond the superficial information.

He shows how the resultant virtual state monopoly in design and procurement had disastrous consequences for aircraft innovation and development, suffocating both competition and initiative, and leading to the maintenance of inadequate aircraft by the Royal Flying Corps following the outbreak of war. The continuing dispute and its culmination in the "Fokker Scourge" controversy of 1915-1916 graphically characterise the strained development of military-industrial relations in this area. Dr HUGH DRIVER gained an MA in War Studies from King's College London, and a D.Phil in modern history at Oriel College, Oxford.
