About the Author
Ajahn Sucitto, a Theravadan Buddhist monk in the Thai forest tradition for twenty-eight years, is the Abbot of Chithurst Monastery in England. He is a popular teacher of meditation who conducts retreats around the world.
Dr. Nick Scott is a botanist and ecologist who has worked most of his life in conversation. He lives in Chithurst, outside London.
Stephen Batchelor has studied in Buddhist monasteries in India, Switzerland, and Korea. An accomplished writer and photographer, he has translated, written, and contributed to many books about Buddhism including Buddhism Without Beliefs, Verses from the Center, and The Tibet Guide. He lives in the South of France.

A book that you will read over and over...

This is one of my favourite books of all time. You will laugh, you will cry and then you will be glad that you read this book. The authors write from their hearts and you almost feel like you are on the journey with them. They talk about their journey in India and also this journey called life. Buy it. Read it. Lend it to your family and friends. This book deserves a place in your home and heart.

There are many pearls hidden inside!

This is a lovely book! It really seems like a genuine account of the travels of these 2 guys through "Mother India," which seems a little too, um, rough for my likes in travel. Yet it is just a great book!
I was especially Ajahn Sucitto's words, which contained many wonderful pearls of wisdom, especially when he speculates about mental processes, meditation, what the Buddha really did under the Bodhi tree, and so forth.
This is a must-read for people who love "travel Buddhism," as I do!!

Rude Awakenings indeed

The double authors of Rude Awakenings, a British Theravada Buddhist monk Ajahn Sucitto, and his samanera assistant, Nick Scott, got to the heights and depths of real pilgrimage--the kind done on foot. Bare feet got them a start, but soon the bad roads, travel through farmed fields, small accidents, and blisters, soon returned them to footwear. Bravo for them. Hence the title. With more reviews on this page, I'll finish by urging people to read their story and enjoy their honesty--not to leave out the warm hospitality of villagers who offered them food and rest.
