How to Be Sick: A Buddhist-Inspired Guide for the Chronically Ill and Their Caregivers, by Toni Bernhard

This life-affirming, instructive, and thoroughly inspiring book is a must-read for anyone who is - or who might one day be - sick. It can also be the perfect gift of guidance, encouragement, and uplifting inspiration to family, friends, and loved ones struggling with the many terrifying or disheartening life changes that come so close on the heels of a diagnosis of a chronic condition or life-threatening illness. Authentic and graceful, How to be Sick reminds us of our endless inner freedom, even under high degrees of suffering and pain.

The author - who became ill while a university law professor in the prime of her career - tells the reader how she got sick and, to her and her partner's bewilderment, stayed that way. Toni had been a longtime meditator, going on long meditation retreats and spending many hours rigorously practicing, but soon discovered that she simply could no longer engage in those difficult and taxing forms. She had to learn ways to make "being sick" the heart of her spiritual practice - and through truly learning how to be sick, she learned how, even with many physical and energetic limitations, to live a life of equanimity, compassion, and joy. And whether we ourselves are ill or not, we can learn these vital arts from Bernhard's generous wisdom in How to Be Sick.

Toni showed me how to face and be with my cancer
By Marilyn Wilson
I want to tell you about this wonderful book that Toni has written. I am lucky to be one of the few non-professional people to have had the privilege of reading How to be Sick.
First, a little background about myself. I have stage four advanced breast cancer stemming from the genetic mutation BRCA2. I nursed my Mother when she died, have been there while my sister and nieces have undergone and are still undergoing treatment and, of course, my own. I am now on a trial drug to try and stop my cancer spreading plus monthly treatments. All this means I have many days of lying on a bed being very unwell and am also facing a very uncertain future.

Toni's book came to me through a link from a friend and it has been a god send. In the past I have both bought and been given a number of books on how to deal and be with my BC. Most are along the lines of me needing to think my cancer away, to completely change my diet, to think possitively and so on - you know what I mean. There is none of that in Toni's book. It is simply the most practical and inspiring book I have read. Toni draws from not only wonderful Buddhist practices, but from movies, songs, people, wrtings, poetry, and her own experiences. She showed me how to face and be with my cancer, to feel the uncertainty, the fear, to be a woman lying on a bed so unwell, worrying...
I have been around Buddhists for around 20 years (I am not a Buddhist myself) and the way Toni explains the concepts and practices of Buddhism is the best I have heard. Wow, Toni, I get it... or should I say - I'm getting it.

I do not write this lightly, How to be Sick resonated with my very core. As I face all that is cancer, not only now but the future, I am so very very grateful to have Toni's book right there beside me. Thank you.

Spirituality and chronic illness
By Touched by Lyme (Dorothy Kupcha Leland)
This book is not about how to get sick or how to stay sick. It's about how to "be" when you are sick. How to have a worthwhile existence, finding meaning, purpose and joy, even when chronic illness seems to have stolen your life away.

It's a tall order. And one that many chronically ill people (and their caregivers) may feel too overwhelmed even to contemplate. Yet, Bernhard found that certain ways of being helped her through the dark tunnel. In effect, dealing with chronic illness became her spiritual practice, and she has valuable insights to offer others in the same condition.

A Guide For When Life Goes Wrong...And Then Making It Right Again
By Beth L.
Whether it's a car accident or lupus, we or a loved one, will have our active life stolen away from us someday. This book is one person's painful and, yes even, inspiring journey through the underworld of debilitating illness. But she doesn't leave us dwelling down there, rather her honesty, courage, and compassion brings us back up into a world of light. The author becomes a role model for how to find joy and thrive in a life turned upside down by chronic illness.

While the title of this book has the word "Buddhist," it's really for all people regardless of spiritual preference. It's also a book for not only the healthy-life-deprived person, but also for their caregivers. Because chronic illnesses devastates the entire family, changes intimate relationships, and places a huge direct burden on the immediate caregiver, this is a book for all of us.

The author even creatively wrote an "emergency guide" at the back of the book that lists the myriad challenges faced by the family and then matches them to the relevant pages in the book. So, she has made her book, both a story and reference guide for her readers.

I'll be honest with you, this is both a difficult book to read, as well as a heart-opening book. There's no way you can read it without being changed. The way the author has written this book, her personal struggle deeply touched me. And I'm not sure that if I was in her place, I could have found the emotional and physical strength to look in the mirror and honestly share with others what I saw.

Warrior-King of Shambhala: Remembering Chogyam Trungpa, by Jeremy Hayward

A fascinating portrait of Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, one of the most charismatic, controversial, and visionary spiritual teachers of all time, this book is also an inspiring, heart-warming, and often humorous account of the author's own path of transformation from skeptic to mature spiritual practitioner. What's more, Warrior-King of Shambhala is a splendid presentation of the teachings and experiences that have become the heart of the Shambhala Buddhist tradition.

A pioneer in introducing Tibetan Buddhism to the West, Chogyam Trungpa is also one of its most controversial figures: he often defied notions of how a holy man should act, and his unconventional behavior and "crazy wisdom" caused some to view him with suspicion. But he was above all known for his compassion, insight, and vision and was immediately recognized as a living Buddha by a generation of spiritual seekers.

One of those seekers was Jeremy Hayward, who in little time became a close confidante of the teacher. Warrior King of Shambhala, Hayward's intimate memoir of Trungpa, begins with their first meeting in 1970, progressing year by year until Trungpa's death and beyond. Hayward vividly describes Trungpa's powerful, direct way of working with students, his groundbreaking work in bringing Buddhism to the West, and the teachings Trungpa presented each year. He also describes his own personal spiritual journey with the inimitable Chogyam Trungpa as his guide.

Review
"Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche is the father of Tibetan Buddhism in the United States." (Gelek Rimpoche, author of Good Life, Good Death)

"A tender, candid, beautifully written memoir by one of Chogyam Trungpa's closest, most senior students. This eloquent, affecting account shows what it was like to be with Rinpoche, in intimate proximity, throughout the excitement, turbulence, and unceasing creativity of his seventeen years teaching in North America. A unique, extraordinary book by an exceptional practitioner, teacher, and writer." (Reginald A. Ray, author of Touching Enlightenment, Indestructible Truth, and Secret of the Vajra World)

"In Warrior King of Shambhala, Dr. Hayward pulls the reader into his own spiritual journey. He also allows us to clearly glimpse the mind of a complex and important leader. This book belongs with anyone who wants to go behind the scenes of the development of an immensely important American spiritual community." (Ethan Nichtern, author of One City, and founder of The Interdependence Project)

"Trungpa Rinpoche was a true trailblazer of Tibetan Buddhism in the West. His wit, his humor, his scholarship, and most of all his understanding of the Western mind made him an outstanding teacher. We all owe him our deep gratitude for his wisdom and compassion. Jeremy Hayward, being a long term student of Rinpoche, has done us an invaluable service in introducing his life and teachings to the general public." (Traleg Rinpoche, author of The Practice of Lojong)

"Dr. Jeremy Hayward has written yet another beautiful book about his understanding of the path of Shambhala Buddhism. In his autobiographical account as a close student of the legendary Chogyam Trungpa, Dr. Hayward reveals to us what it was really like to learn firsthand from such an extraordinary teacher. His story is by turns funny, poignant, inspiring, astonishing, and heartbreaking. I believe it will be a lasting and unique contribution to the growing literature about the birth of the buddhadharma in the Western world." (Prof. Frank Berliner, Naropa University)

"Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche is undoubtedly one of the most remarkable masters of Tibetan Buddhism. His vast vision paved the way for the precious teachings of Buddhism to be firmly planted in the West. Rinpoche was the true example of brilliant wisdom, warrior's courage and immeasurable unconditional love. This book on Rinpoche's life will undoubtedly be precious for all connected with Buddhism and will for generations inspire people to connect with this most remarkable master and bodhisattva. It is a wonderful and loving offering of a devoted student to his most precious teacher." (Jetsun Khandro Rinpoche, author of This Precious Life)

"I am deeply touched by the beautiful way in which Jeremy's profound love for Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche shines through in this personal memoir. Jeremy describes him exactly as I knew him--wrathful, penetrating, loving, kind, merciful, maddening, irritating, frustrating, challenging, but most importantly constantly pushing us to go further, deeper, and become more genuine. He also portrays Rinpoche's loneliness and sadness in a way that cuts directly to the heart. The writing evokes so many wonderful images and memories, as well as the continuity of joy that Jeremy writes about in regard to Rinpoche's passing." (Dr Mitchell Levy, personal physician to Chogyam Trungpa and currently Professor of Medicine at Brown University Medical School)

"A completely fresh and mesmerizing account of British physicist Jeremy Hayward's close relationship with his Tibetan guru, Chogyam Trungpa. Beginning with bashful nerdiness, Hayward chronicles his mounting appreciation for this charmingly bold teacher, weaving engaging personal stories and sweeping perspectives on Rinpoche's evolution from dharma teacher to warrior king of Shambhala. Uniquely qualified to contextualize the Shambhala terma (treasure) teachings, Hayward provides the link missing in previous accounts of Rinpoche's life and teachings, showing the centrality of his daring vision of enlightened society beyond mere Buddhism." (Judith Simmer-Brown, Naropa University professor and author of Dakini's Warm Breath: The Feminine Principle in Tibetan Buddhism)

"Warrior King of Shambhala is a personal chronicle of the skeptic's journey, as well as an insider's account of the events that marked the establishment of one of the more vibrant and lasting Buddhist communities in North America. Those who come to this book seeking either a sordid tell-all or a saccharine endorsement of "the good old days" will be equally thwarted. In the end, Hayward demonstrates the difficult personal and public business of sorting out the ambiguous legacy of a powerful teacher. His honesty is courageous and imperfect-and that's likely the way Chogyam Trungpa would have had it." (Shambhala Sun)

A diamond-like memoir (updated)
By T. Fiero
I'm deeply grateful to Jeremy Hayward for writing this book. More than a simple remembrance, it offers clear glimpses into the spacious mind and heart of the great Buddhist teacher and meditation master, the Vidyadhara Chogyam Trungpa.

I had brief encounters with Chogyam Trungpa at Naropa Institute in the early 70's, but didn't stick around long enough to get to know him personally. I followed his brilliant career through his writings, and lamented his death in Nova Scotia in 1987. For me, Jeremy's book fills a gap between knowing Chogyam Trungpa as a teacher and knowing him as a human being.

Warrior-King of Shambhala is written with piercing honesty and clarity. I return to it frequently, opening it at random and reading a few pages at a time. It doesn't fail to uplift and inspire me. Thank you, Jeremy, for your faithful service to your most demanding teacher, to basic sanity and the kingdom of Shambhala.

8/21/2012 - Three years after writing this review, I would like to add that this book continues to serve as a valuable guide. As much as it documents Chogyam Trungpa's efforts to transmit Tibetan Buddhist teachings to the West, it also documents Jeremy Hayward's gradual evolution from student to beloved teacher and mentor. In addition, the excellent Glossary, Notes and Index sections enhance the book's usefulness as a reference book.

Much appreciation
By Caroline
Not a person to have had a guru on my own path, I believe Hayward does put across how magnetically attractive Trungpa Rinpoche was (is) and how that furthered many people's paths -- not easy to weave in mere words. This is not a puff piece but a genuine inquiry and examination of what a spiritually gifted man steeped in an ancient culture brought to the 20th century West: a courageous first approximation of a wisdom way for the West, often chaotically and sometimes destructively in the gap between the ancient and the modern, but always True. I feel, in the deepest way, well served by this book, and grateful to the author.

Jeremy is very pure.
By Elizabeth M. Olmsted
As one who was there, I was very impressed by the accuracy and the balanced view of this account. I too remembered, and shed a tear or two.

Diana Mukpo wrote about Trungpa Rinpoche, as his wife, John Perks, as idiot servant; this is the story from the point of view of a genuine student.

Making it more than just a memoir, Jeremy has woven in the background and rationale for the presentation of the Shambhala Teachings, and illustrates how they relate to the more traditional Tibetan Buddhist teachings.

Jeremy as scientist, convincingly presents the proposition that nowadays we accept scientific materialism as truth, religion, without ever knowing it. This point, illustrated though his own journey and hesitations, might be the most important insight, in terms of benefiting people right now.

Sex and the Spiritual Teacher: Why It Happens, When It's a Problem, and What We All Can Do, by Scott Edelstein

Sex and the Spiritual Teacher looks at the complex of forces that tempt otherwise insightful, compassionate, and well-intentioned teachers to lose their way--and that tempt some of their students to lose their way as well. It analyzes why most of our current efforts to keep spiritual teachers from transgressing usually don't (and in fact can't) work. Perhaps most importantly, it suggests a set of practices and structures that can build community, encourage healthy student-teacher relationships, increase trust and spiritual intimacy between teachers and their students, and help authentic spiritual teachers stay happily monogamous or celibate. Sex and the Spiritual Teacher is for anyone who is or might become part of a spiritual community: students, teachers, clergy, lay leaders, and even casual visitors. It's a reader-friendly, no-nonsense guide to making spiritual life safer and fuller for all of us one person, relationship, and community at a time.

Given my personal and professional experiences with this painful and all too pervasive topic, I was indeed interested to read this book. Many years ago, on my college-sponsored study trip to India, one of my Philosophy professors (who was also Chairman of the Department) and our spiritual teacher (a native of India), pressured me for sex. While young and unsure if rejecting the advances of the two most powerful men in my declared major might damage my grades (or worse), I was nonetheless clear about being completely uninterested.

Fast-forward a few decades. As a seminary graduate and ordained Protestant clergy, I was called to serve a church which had just gone through the process of removing its married senior pastor for various abuses of power, including multiple affairs with women in his congregation. My charge was, in part, to help with the healing process.

Mindful of my own experiences, these are the thoughts that came to me as I read Scott Edelstein's book, "Sex and the Spiritual Teacher: Why It Happens, When It's a Problem, and What We All Can Do."

*this is a tremendously smart and highly readable resource based on research and experience
*woven throughout is the commitment to creating a deeper understanding of the potent dynamics between students and teachers within spiritual communities, and offering ways to make them safer and more effective
*there is a call to action, complete with guidance and direction
*contains excellent materials for increased awareness and prevention
*here is a thoughtful work with depth, insight and empathy that combines scholarship with everyday examples from real life, and unflinching clarity that includes compassion, accountability and a stand for justice
*this guy has a real willingness to tackle the tough issues with honesty, humanity and (where appropriate and most welcome) humor

If this book were required reading for all seminarians, spiritual students, teachers and seekers, and all governing bodies and boards of our various faith traditions, I believe that collectively we could redeem, restore and heal much of what has been lost, broken or damaged within our culture where healthy and safe boundaries have been violated. And importantly, prevent many future abuses of power and misconduct.

Additionally, I believe Edelstein's definitions and descriptions, though-provoking questions, and his specific guidelines, suggestions and examples extend beyond our spiritual communities to address the broader dynamics of leadership and authority within relationships, communities and institutions. His treatment of gender differences is truly first rate. He looks with a keen and perceptive eye at the very real human proclivity toward the use and potential abuse of power in its many guises and expressions. I highly recommend this book.

Everyone involved in a spiritual community should read this book
By Lizabeth Roemer
This is an invaluable book that turns toward a topic that so many people turn away from. Scott Edelstein brings compassion and wisdom to exploring the understandable, human reasons these transgressions often arise, without wavering in the clear message that they must be avoided for the sake of all members of the spiritual community. He provides clear, helpful guidelines that all community members can follow to avoid these situations or address them when they have occurred. I highly recommend this book for spiritual teachers and students, and really for anyone involved in a teacher-student relationship.

A Conversation that Needs to Happen
By spiritmom
This book addresses an issue that is real. Some other reviews seem to think this is a kind of "anti-sex" or "anti-male" diatribe (hmmmm, on the last one as this was written by a man). It is neither. It is not discrimination to describe a reality that exists in the world: male spiritual teachers, male ministers, male priests, etc. are the predominant gender that crosses sexual boundaries from positions where they provide elderhood, spiritual mentoring, pastoral care, guidance, trust and authority. The issues here are not about "puritanicalism" but about power imbalances in the spiritual setting, the effect of the sexual relationship of a teacher/student on the entire sangha/community, the vulnerability of the student acolyte who has come for spiritual guidance, the confusion of roles of lover and teacher. While there are quite a few famous gurus who have crossed this boundary, that does not make it right - only more indicative of the prevalence of this issue and the need for a conversation about it. Human beings are complex and can have wisdom in some areas and blinders on in others, especially where personal desire and arousal are concerned.

I have a friend who insists she was not harmed in any way by her sexual affair with her guru, yet she confessed that she wound up ultimately having to leave the community because of confusion over the mixing of roles of lover and teacher, and there were also dynamics that played out in the community as well because of it. This is similar in some ways to the workplace and the proscriptions on office romance, especially between bosses and employees, where issues of power and perception are also present, and also reminiscent in other ways of other healer/seeker of help type of situations, such as psychotherapist/client, doctor/patient, etc. It's about boundaries not any judgment about sex. The professor/student affair can also cause harm to the student or the classroom as well and the vast majority of universities and institutions of learning have rules about that practice for good reason.

In no way does Edelstein bash sex or have a repressed view of it (or I would not have read this book, being someone who studies tantra). The fact is that power imbalances and boundary crossings by teachers into sexualized connections, even when consensual, are most often harmful to the spiritual community and the individual. Even in the context of tantra teachers there should be boundaries that respect the sacred role of teacher - student. There is no harm in waiting until the student teacher relationship has ended to sexualize the relationship (other than impatience of desire), and there is much potential harm in not waiting as Edelstein accurately points out. Edelstein describes conscious ways that sex and love can be expressed respectfully without harming the individual or the community by maintenance of proper boundaries and timing. While this book may have some flaws, overall it is a much needed conversation that Edelstein has opened up. I look forward to the evolution of his ideas in future revisions.

Beside Still Waters: Jews, Christians, and the Way of the BuddhaFrom Brand: Wisdom Publications

A compelling question for people of faith today is how to remain committed to one's own religious tradition while being open to the beauty and truth of other religions. For example, some fear that Buddhism is a threat to Western faith traditions and express grave doubts about interreligious and cross-cultural encounters. Yet, many who have actually broadened their experience profess to have developed a deeper understanding of and a deeper commitment to their tradition of origin.

This is what makes Beside Still Waters: Jews, Christians, and the Way of the Buddha such a new and meaningful contribution. Rather than offering research or lectures, Beside Still Waters takes a deeply personal approach, allowing the reader to delve into the individual experiences of fourteen Jews and Christians whose encounters with Buddhism have truly impacted their sense of religious identity.

As Jack Miles, author of God: A Biography, says in the book's foreword, "The Buddhist presence in the religious world is far larger than a head-count of Buddhists can reveal." Beside Still Waters upholds this point by way of the diverse and eloquent authors who lend their perspective in its pages; these include Sylvia Boorstein, John B. Cobb, Norman Fischer, Ruben Habito, and other important members of the Jewish, Christian, Buddhist, and scholarly communities. Their collected anecdotes and interviews amount to an unprecedented and enduring work, sure to deepen our ability to understand each other, and therefore, ourselves.

Review
Winner of the Society of Buddhist-Christian Studies' Frederick J. Streng Book of the Year Award, 2004 (.)

"An excellent anthology of personal essays, describes how Judaism and Christianity have influenced Western Buddhism and, in turn, been influenced by it. Its authors are committed to their different traditions, yet open about borrowing language and techniques from others." (ForeWord)

"In wide-ranging and deeply personal ways, fourteen Jewish and Christian authors narrate how their spirituality has been profoundly awakened through immersion into Buddhist wisdom and practices. Beside Still Waters will richly reward religious study groups and readers interested in spirituality who are looking for role-models on their quest to become authentic human beings. More specifically, it will be very useful for undergraduate professors of comparative religion who are not content with mere historical and philosophical approaches, but who aim to help student consciousness acquire a vibrancy and radiance that keep the experience of Mystery alive and fresh, and move them to live with more awareness and compassion, more wisdom and love." (Horizons)

"Beside Still Waters provides vivid stories of Jews and Christians who have gone east for spiritual study and then returned to their respective faiths much richer for the experience. The stories in the book reveal a pattern: the loss of an early religious dream, the finding of a new one, and a return to the childhood tradition with a reawakening of wonder and spiritual power. Alan Lew, who calls himself a Zen rabbi, believes that his Zen years taught him 'the value of disciplined spiritual practice.'... From these and other insights in the probing, thoughtful collection, we discover that through the exploration of other practices, we can find a mirror to reflect the lost (or forgotten) elements of our own traditions." (Matthew Fox, in Yoga Journal)

"Easy to read, perfect 'before-turning-out-the-light' reading. I agree with the book's foreword by Jack Miles: 'Open anywhere. You will not be disappointed.'" (Des Moines Register)

"Important and worthwhile. Beside Still Waters is a watershed work in the increasingly important area of multifaith studies." (Spirituality and Health)

"Sublime. Beside Still Waters should be required reading for anyone of any faith. At a point in time when too many people seem to be speaking at each other without listening or respecting different points of view, this book is truly heaven-sent." (New York Resident)

"Readers will undoubtedly find spiritual nourishment in this excellent collection of personal testimonies. Beside Still Waters speaks directly and eloquently to so many people in our contemporary world who find themselves straying beyond their parochial religious boundaries to draw on other traditions, while still maintaining their identity within their communities of origin. Fresh winds are blowing in this book and it presages a pluralistic world of deep dialogue and enriched religious practice. These are not empty promises of what can happen but testimonies to what has happened, to the way lives have been transformed. There is a great deal here both to challenge and encourage the attentive reader." (Interreligious Insight: A Journal of Dialogue and Engagement)

"An intimate glimpse into the lives of Jews and Christians engaged in Buddhist practice without giving up their birth religion. These accounts are not at all, dry but juicy in their details and variety of experiences and feelings. They reveal that authentic interfaith dialogue is not necessarily the kind that takes place around a conference table but inside our bodies, hearts, and minds." (Inquiring Mind)

Demonstrates How Well These 3 Religions Can Interconnect
By Swing King
This book is an inspirational work taking a look at people who classify themselves as Christian or Jewish, but who commit themselves also to the teachings of the Buddha. When three traditions like this meet, it's like, as Jack Miles points out in the foreword, 3 drained travelers gathering at a resting spot discussing their journey. All three traditions are ancient, but spiritual practice is new and exciting for anyone who engages themselves in it's wonderful arms. All three paths take practice and dedication, not one of them we simply understand "right off the bat." This book truly is fascinating in it's representation of all three dominant world religions and how one can successfully utilize the very best of the teachings offered by them all. If you enjoyed "The Good Heart: A Buddhist Perspective on the teachings of Jesus" by H.H. the Dalai Lama, your sure to enjoy this book, likewise. So what are you waiting for? Buy it!

Review
"Education is an area that has been crying out for mindfulness. Schoeberlein's book makes a helpful contribution to a growing body of literature and curricula on how to bring secular contemplative practices, including cultivating kindness, into school systems. It's replete with techniques to help teachers ground themselves amid the chaos and tension of the classroom, and related techniques that teachers can use to guide students--helping them enjoy being at school, learn better, and get along well with others." (Shambhala Sun)

"Reflection can become the new basic "R" of education, promoting social and emotional learning while cultivating resilience and resourcefulness in students of all ages. In this wonderful book, the authors have provided a user-friendly guide to developing a teacher's own way of reflecting on the nature of the mind and on becoming open to present experience--of being "mindful"--that can help develop reflection as a way of living and of teaching. Consider this book an invitation to try on a research-proven focus of attention that nurtures emotional balance, promotes bodily health, supports empathic relationships, and even strengthens the brain. What more could we ask for ourselves as teachers and for our students who deserve to be taught in a way the prepares them for life from the inside out?" (Daniel J. Siegel, M.D. author, Mindsight: The New Science of Personal Transformation &The Mindful Brain: Reflection & Attunement in the Cultivation of Well-Being)

"A gift for educators, helpful in any classroom, for any teacher and with every student." (Goldie Hawn, children's advocate and founder of the Hawn Foundation)

"This timely volume brings the teaching of mindfulness from the sphere of spiritual traditions into the purview of general education. Devoid of jargon and deeply enriching to students and teachers alike, this contemplative approach promotes new skills that lead to gaining focus, balance, and enjoyment." (Dalia Judovitz, Ph.D., Contemplative Practice Fellow and NEH Professor at Emory University)

"A terrific contribution to understanding why mindfulness belongs in the classroom and a gentle guide on how to weave it into activities." (Gianni Faedda, M.D., author of Parenting a Bipolar Child)

"A wise and sensible guide, a generous gift to teachers and students alike." (Ara Guzelimian, provost and dean of The Juilliard School)

"A treasure-trove of practical strategies, and an exceptionally important contribution to the field!" (Richard C. Brown, chair of the Contemplative Education Department, Naropa University)

"Many teachers often sense there is a mysterious element to their teaching, something that impacted their effectiveness even more than the material they were offering. This book reveals that element, and offers many specific ways to cultivate, harness, and incorporate it. A must-read for those interested in the potential of education." (Soren Gordhamer, author of Wisdom 2.0)

"A rich resource for teachers, school counselors, and faculty involved in preparing the next generation of educators. I can't wait to share this book with my colleagues and students." (Susan Theberge, Ed.D., professor of education at Keene State College)

"Offers hands-on tools, exercises, and insights tempered by the voice of experience that help to build relationships with students and engage them in learning, and that will renew teachers' own energy, passion, and commitment." (Eugene C. Roehlkepartain, vice president of the Search Institute)

Educators, this book is for you.
By Richard R. Brady
Even educators with well established mindfulness practices can find it a challenge to maintain mindfulness at work. What might mindful teaching look like? What can one do to support it? Mindful Teaching and Teaching Mindfulness: A Guide for Anyone Who Teaches Anything by Deborah Schoeberlein (Wisdom Publications, available in early September) answers these questions. It's an important new resource for all teachers, regardless of their previous experience with mindfulness practice. In her book, Schoeberlein paints a detailed picture of a day in the life of a mindful teacher. The day begins with waking up to mindful breathing and setting an intention. It ends that night with meditating on one's satisfaction with the day. In between, there are many informal practices, described by Schoeberlein, which teachers can use throughout the school day, on their own or in their interactions with students. These descriptions aren't a prescription for mindful teaching. Rather, they provide examples that can inspire teachers to find ways to infuse their days with mindfulness that work for them.

Teaching mindfully is already a great gift to students. It's where many teachers might stop, not feeling that teaching mindfulness practices to their students is possible in their situation. However, mindful teaching changes classroom environments, creating new opportunities. Further, Schoeberlein's many examples of ways to teach mindfulness can suggest possibilities for such teaching even with what might seem to be the most challenging student populations and curricula. Schoeberlein gives formal instructions for each student mindfulness activity. However, as with her informal teacher practices and with the approaches described in my book, Tuning In: Mindfulness in Teaching and Learning, these examples best serve to inspire teachers to develop approaches that fit their specific situations.

Wonderful Resource for Elementary Through Unviversity Classrooms
By Dr. Sharon G. Solloway
I found this book to be appropriate for all teachers and students no matter the extent of experience with mindfulness practice. I was a first grade teacher before I was a university professor. I began my mindfulness meditation practice in 1996 while I was still a first grade teacher. As I read this book, I found myself thinking that the information was as relevant for my former first grade students as it is for my university students today. I also thought how blessed it would have been for both me and my first grade students if this book had been available to me then. I am delighted to have access to so many mindfulness practice activities for the classroom between the same two covers. I imagine it as my ready companion as I plan my mindfulness course activities each week this year. ...sharon solloway

Just What the Teacher Ordered!
By Roseanne M. Riolo
This book brings back the joys and passion of teaching and the wonderment of learning, a two way street for both the teacher and the student. In this new age, one of the many frustrations of teaching is that teachers do not see the stamina, perseverance and desire in many students to sustain learning. Using the techniques in this guide will make both teachers and students life-long learners. Finally, a book that really concentrates on teaching as a craft and as something that is most precious. Thank you,Deborah. I intend to share copies with my English Department at my school this September.

From School Library Journal
As with his other giddy retellings of familiar stories, Ross preserves the bare bones of the story line but embellishes it with imaginative details. A father who shouts "Sweetie-pies!" when reunited with his children, a witch who calls Gretel a "silly sausage," and a money-loving swan are among Ross' distinctive characters. The language makes this a delightful read-aloud, particularly for children who already know the traditional story. The rosy-cheeked, snub-nosed children and sharp-featured gray villains will be familiar to Ross' fans. Here he also uses line to create texture and a sense of grim darkness, a technique he has not used in his previous works. Children will enjoy the cameo appearances of cats and mice that indicate other stories are going on. The book is a good contrast to other less traditional versions, such as Anthony Browne's Hansel and Gretel (Knopf, 1988). --Barbara Chatton, College of Education, University of Wyoming, Laramie

The Formation of al-Andalus, Part 2: Language, Religion, Culture and the Sciences (The Formation of the Classical Islamic World), by Julio

These two volumes present a conspectus of current research on the history and culture of early medieval Spain and Portugal, from the time of the Arab conquest in 711 up to the fall of the caliphate. They trace the impact of Islamisation on the pre-existing Roman and Visigothic political and social structures, the continuing interaction between Christian and Muslim, and describe the particular development and characteristics of Muslim Spain- al-Andalus. Together, they comprise 38 articles, of which 32 have been translated into English specially for this publication. The first volume focuses on political and social history, and looks in detail at settlement patterns and urbanisation; the second examines questions of language and covers the brilliant cultural and intellectual history of the period.

Insights into Muslim Spain
By Robert Lebling
These are volumes 46 and 47 in the impressive Variorum collection, "The Formation of the Classical Islamic World," under the general editorship of Lawrence I. Conrad. Modern Spain is showing a growing interest in its rich Islamic heritage, and this work certainly reflects that trend.

Part 1, Volume 46, is dominated by quality English translations of the latest Spanish scholarship on history and society in Muslim Spain.

Leopoldo Torres Balbás provides a useful historical catalogue of 22 cities founded by Muslims in al-Andalus, from Badajoz to Calatayud to Murcia to Madrid to Gibraltar. María Luisa Ávila describes the social structure of the Andalusian family and discusses the role of women in Muslim Spain. Miguel Cruz Hernández, in a chapter from an upcoming book on Islam in Spain, discusses the overall social structure of early al-Andalus, and the evolving relationships among Arabs, Berbers, Muwallads (converts to Islam), Mozarabs (Arabized Christians) and Jews.

For dessert, non-Spaniard Heinz Halm gives a new historical and linguistic explanation for the origin of the word "al-Andalus" - no, it's not derived from "Vandals," he says, but comes instead from a common real-estate term that the Arabs took over from the Goths, landahlauts (land lot).

Part 2, Volume 47, is packed with new perspectives from Spanish and other scholars on the diverse achievements of civilization in Muslim Spain. For those interested in language, literature, theology, art, architecture, astronomy, mathematics, medicine, pharmacology - this is the place to delve.

Roger Wright explores the disappearance of written popular Latin, or Ladino, among Andalusian Christians, who kept their spoken Romance language but found that Arabic script fully met their literary needs. Manuel Ocaña Jiménez offers a new look at the origins of the Great Mosque of Cordoba, and in the process shows that Muslims took over Gothic Cordoba not by violence but through negotiated peace treaty and at the urging of the local Jewish community.

Anchoring the Exact and Natural Sciences section are informative articles examining Arab, Indian and Greek influences on astronomy in al-Andalus. Particularly fascinating is Paul Kunitsch's translation of "The Book on the Stars" by Andalusian polymath Ibn Habib, relaying early Arab star knowledge originally compiled by the founder of Islam's Maliki juridical school, Malik ibn Anas of al-Madinah.
